In the novel Cry, The Beloved Country by Alan Paton, the traits portrayed by the main characters can be observed by their actions and their reactions to other characters as well as events in the plot of the story. Though fictional, these characters can resemble people in our lives. Stephen Kumalo, for example, exhibits many traits throughout that make him similar to my friend Emmett. He is a friend of mine that goes to another school. Both are humble, though Stephen is more naïve. Also, both have had outbursts of anger but immediately apologize for his actions and repent. Furthermore, both are virtuous, though Stephen is more virtuous than Emmett is. My friend’s character traits can be compared to Stephen Kumalo through their character traits.
One character trait they share is determination. Stephen persistently tries to reunite his family, going from town to town in search of his son and sister. Emmett is always doing things with his family or for his family. Stephen however, is more virtuous than Emmett is since he is a pastor and

An example of this is on page 39 where Stephen reacts angrily to his wife’s suggestion that their son will never come back, and although she protests, saying that Kumalo is hurting himself, he continues to deny her claim angrily. When he realizes that his words are wounding his wife, he calms down and reconciles himself to the inevitable. Emmett however, is slow to anger but takes a while to calm down after losing his temper. Both however, immediately apologize for their behavior and repent afterwards. Another difference between the two is how they act when they are angry. Stephen for example, acts cruelly on page 146 through 147 when Stephen is angered by her promiscuity and asks her if she would accept him as a lover and is later ashamed of his behavior. In comparison, Emmett may lash out or be frustrated when angry. Despite their temper, both are also
American politician William Hall once stated: “We go on and on about our differences. But, you know, our differences are less important than our similarities. People have a lot in common with one another, whether they see that or not.” No matter where we go we can always see similarities in everything. We see similarities in how a musician writes his music, and what he writes about. Just as a musician, we see many similarities in how a writer writes his stories, and what he writes about. Washington Irving uses several similarities in his stories “The Devil and Tom Walker” and “Rip Van Winkle.”
The two characters I decided to talk about are Eckels from A Sound of Thunder and the Narrator from The Scarlet Ibis. Even though these two characters are in very different situations, have very different conflicts, and are very different from each other, these two characters still have some interesting similarities. And Even though they do have some similarities to each other they show them in complete different ways from each other.
Often times, people view individuals by the way they handle situations and their responses to others. Every character in a story can be summed up in about three to four characteristics based on their actions and speech. In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, the narrator reveals his true character through the way he treats his younger brother. He possesses characteristics including authority, pride, and cruelty, and readers know these traits through Hurst’s dialogue and actions.
In Edward Scissorhands, each of the characters have their own persona, just as the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird do. Peg and Atticus both have similar personalities concerning the main characters of the stories. When Peg firsts sees Edward, although at first, she is scared by looking at Edward’s scissor hands, she does not at all think he is weird just because he is different. When Atticus is assigned to defend Tom Robinson, he does not complain, instead he supports Tom to the best of his ability. If there are two people who judge Tom and Edward the most, it would be Bob Ewell and Jim respectively. After the trial of Tom Robinson, despite the fact that he was found guilty then shot and killed, Bob Ewell menaces Tom’s widow, tries to break into the judge’s house and spits on Atticus. Jim continuously makes the effort to threaten Edward with violence, even after he is sent back up to his house by the township. Mayella Ewell and
She can also stand up for herself when there is a conflict. I can relate with her because I am usually really shy in the beginning, but I can get talkative if I’m with friends. While Rosa Hubermann usually calls Liesel out using swear words, and gets mad for no reason, but in the end those were her own ways of saying that she cares. I can compare myself to her because I can get annoyed and mad easily. Meanwhile Rudy Steiner, a young boy can take care of everyone, make people feel welcome, help others when there’s a problem, and he will even do anything to keep others happy. I can compare myself with some of these traits because I like to help others with things they do, for example, I help other people with homework and other projects. Death is also a character that I can relate to because he can experience sadness, joy and even depression. He looks for hope in the gathering, reading, and telling of stories, he also finds ways to give meaning to his work. I can relate to him because he is a hard worker, and even though his job is depressing he finds ways to make it
Most Americans often compare themselves with characters from their favorite movie or book. In fact, some people may even visualize themselves as their favorite character when they are watching a movie or reading a book. I relate most with the movie character Tip from the animated movie Home. Tip is very similar to me because she loves traveling and sight-seeing, she adores her pets, and she would do anything for her mom.
characters are in many ways divergent, and it is in fact these traits that reveal the most about
Throughout the book I felt connected to one character, that character was George. George and I share similar qualities and our lifestyles can relate. One major characteristic I found in George is his ability
In "A Rose for Emily" and "Barn Burning," William Faulkner creates two characters worthy of comparison. Emily Grierson, a recluse from Jefferson, Mississippi, is an important figure in the town, despite spending most of her life in seclusion. On the contrary, Abner Snopes is a loud, fiery-tempered man that most people tend to avoid. If these characters are judged by reputation and outward appearance only, the conclusion would be that Emily Grierson and Abner Snopes are complete opposites. However, despite the external differences, these two characters have surprisingly similar personalities.
• What are the characters’ emotions, attitudes, and behaviors? What do these indicate to the reader about the character?
When the same person features in the literature of two different stories written by the same author, they often show differences between behavior and description.
One similarity is that, both Emmett Till and Tom Robinson never got justice. In the end of To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom was shot and killed trying to escape because he knew he didn’t do anything wrong, but the court was still going to find him guilty because he was a black man. In the Emmett Till case, Till was kidnapped and murdered, and the guilty men were acquitted and protected from further prosecution.
I assert that when I read about characters in a story or write my own story with my own characters, their thoughts become my own and as a result, I see a change in my own character and how I face things everyday. I develop the character traits I deem ‘good’ and learn from the character
, the characters in the story often show emotions whether it be externally or internally. The
A character trait is the aspect of a person's behavior and attitudes that make up their personality. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is known to have strong characterization. One of the most important characters is Atticus Finch, a highly respected lawyer in Macomb County and a father to Jem and Scout Finch. Two major character traits Atticus truly represents is compassion and understanding.
