In the lesbian, bi-sexual, gay and transgender (LGBT) community affirmative action should also obtain continued changes. Brandi Bower, longtime Hastings resident and LGBT advocate notes some of the changes that are needed, starting with Nebraska Legislative Bill 568 (LB 586). LB 586 document states the following actions for the communities rights, “Prohibiting disqualification of any person from taking an examination, from promotion or from holding a position because of race, sex, unless it constitutes a bona fide occupational qualification, or national origin, physical disabilities, age, political or religious opinions or affiliations, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other factors which have no bearing upon the individual's fitness …show more content…
This order, “affects nearly 24,000 companies with 28 million collective employees, which is close to one fifth of the U.S.’s workforce,” according to the article ‘President Obama Signs Executive Order on LGBT Workplace Equality.’ (Love) By signing this order, President Obama helped many people be able to have the choice and freedom to be who they are without worry of being judged by others. Just recently the VA published a new guide that gives gay couples information on knowing what benefits that are received under the new laws. The executive order helps students by giving them a chance to come into a workplace or school where equality is a common practice. When applying for college homosexuality and gender identification is not always seen right away and campuses are doing what they can to ensure that the stigma does not affect students from applying into their colleges. ‘Issue Brief: The LGBT Community and Affirmative Action in the United States’ states the following, “Since sexual minorities could still be considered oppressed or disadvantaged groups, one proposed way to end prejudice is to actively “recruit” homosexuals into the workplace and universities.”

Recognizing an organization’s alternatives for growth is an important process for companies. By evaluating and selecting the competitive advantages within a market a company can distinguish themselves from their competition. For an organization the “grand strategies indicate the time period over which long-range objectives are to be
For this week’s discussion board question I decide to go out and try to find details about a person and see if I could get them to let me use their phone. I thought that this would be a challenge and people would be very unlikely to trust a stranger who they didn’t know and expected to be rejected multiple times. I also thought this would be difficult for me because I am a very introverted person and don’t feel comfortable talking to people if I don’t know them. Amazingly, it was very easy to do and on my first try I was able to get someone to let me use their phone.
There are many different types of animals that work for us. There are three types of service animals that help the disabled. Guide animals assist the blind, hearing animals signal the deaf, and there are many other animals that help persons with other disabilities. Another way that animals work for us is by providing emotional support to those with mental health issues. These animals are usually prescribed by a doctor and they are called emotional support animals. One last way that we can see an animal working is in the military. There are many military working dogs that serve to protect us just as a
Affirmative action was an outcome of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s. In the past, affirmative action has been used to improve opportunities with education and employment for excluded minority groups in American society President Kennedy was the first to use this term “in an Executive order that directed government contractors to take affirmative action to ensure that applicants are employed, and that employees are treated during employment, without regard to their race, creed, color, or national origin” (Affirmative Action, 2014).
The biggest component fueling the backlash is religion and the rights bestowed onto it via the constitution and peoples own religious beliefs regarding same-sex marriage. Both at a state and private level, opponents to the decision reached would knowingly deny service to same sex couples due to religious beliefs. Wolf (2016) stated that “Some states, led by Mississippi and North Carolina, have enacted laws intended to protect those who deny services to gays, lesbians, bisexuals or transgender people because of religious objections. Tennessee and Kansas have passed less sweeping religious exemption laws.” Some states who oppose the ruling believe that they have a fundamental right to enact laws protecting those who deny service to people who share beliefs that go against the religion’s beliefs of the service provider. They believe that the freedom of religion deems their actions in the right, but they are sadly mistaken. Although I highly support all rights within the constitution I can clearly see that the freedom of religion doesn’t grant people the right to segregate others who simply hold different beliefs than others who follow religious beliefs that sate otherwise. The freedom of religion protects one’s ability to practice their religion for themselves, not to force it on others whom share differing opinions than that of their religion. Universities and colleges have also been a topic post ruling, before the ruling, universities were implementing rules to house couples but not homosexual couples in their housing programs. When discussing how this ruling will affect not only religious sanctions whom marry people, but also religious affiliated universities, Masci (2015) asks “And what about a religiously affiliated institution, like a university, that offers married heterosexual students housing but refuses such accommodation for married gay and lesbian students?” the ruling by the Supreme Court, in my
Discrimination against race, gender, religion, or other social characteristics is occurring in all parts of the United States almost every day. Unfortunately, the U.S. has a history of extreme case of discrimination, which has evoked controversy and in worse cases, violence. To discourage any more of adverse discernment towards certain individuals, the Federal government has imposed legislation called affirmative action. According to At Issue: Affirmative Action, “Affirmative action is designed to promote access to opportunities in education, employment, housing, and government contracts among certain designated groups, such as women and minorities“ (At Issue). This law is necessary in today’s society in order to maintain equality and
You would think that today’s society would not discriminate against someone based on their race, color, or national origin. With the changes in lifestyle, people continue to discriminate against those, but also someone’s sexual orientation. Even with laws and regulations, it continues in all parts of the country. The Civil Rights Act of 1964, more specifically Title VI, stated that you could not discriminate against anyone in programs and activities receiving federal
This decision has affected people’s behavior as individuals and public institutions such as family, young, elderly, disabled, LGTB and those with pre-existing conditions. For example, Kates & Ranji (2014) report that health care access and coverage for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGTB) community in the U.S. face opportunities and challenges when getting access to care. The authors report that LGBT individuals experience some discrimination because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, due to ongoing discrimination, access to health care have been limited to these people (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2014). LGBT individuals not only face discrimination when trying to receive care, but also face difficulties that limit them such as “barriers in obtaining insurance coverage, gaps in coverage, cost-related hurdles, and poor treatment by health care providers” (Kates & Ranji, 2014).
We are all people, what separates one person’s sin from another? Who is to tell another, who they cannot love? Who is to judge a mother for feeding her child with her body? Who is to show disrespect to another because they want to be someone else? I believe this Bill will welcome more compassion for one another rather than hatred towards something unknown. The original Civil Rights Act of 1964 was to include sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity to all public accommodations. America needs laws in order for the government to stay in control, but times are changing. In which requires our laws to be more accommodating to the changes we are experiencing. A pending bill called H.R.3185 Equality Act has been introduced to Congress to bring
Former president of the United States, Obama, approved an executive mandate banning the discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity of federal employees from the governments' contractors. Additionally, The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, or EEOC, declared, safeguarding employees on the bases of sex, must also involve the comprehension of the embodiment for the protection of transgender people. However, the association, not recognized by the Court of the United States, have not granted their declared protections in a consistent manner across the nation, producing in an absence of the given freedoms for the working LGBTQ community (Beyond Marriage Equality: A Blueprint for Federal Non-Discrimination Protections,
M. V. Lee Badgett mentions in his article “What Obama Should Do About Workplace Discrimination,” that this would make a great first step on what concerns banning workplace discrimination against homosexuals by federal contractors. If the government, the structural system of our country, is not only willing to accept all but pose as a model of approval towards all kinds of sexual orientations, then so should we, the people, who make part of the nation. Discrimination against this group of people is unfortunate, but extremely common nowadays; more and more individuals are being harassed, not compensated with adequate wages, and/or fired from their jobs because of the way they sexually identify themselves. This strikes a fear in gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender employees who feel as though they must produce more than the average worker in order to not be affected or expelled from their jobs, often leading them to not take illness days off, vacations, and to perhaps be more productive than the majority of their colleagues. Badgett explains that by issuing an executive order against workplace discrimination, President Obama will be able to gradually bring back equality to the nation, providing parallel opportunities for all and reducing stress, fear, as well as death and unemployment rates in the gay community.
