LLUSM Personal Statement

Some people have skills that makes them unique, my skill was just always a hands on learner. I have always just enjoyed fixing minor things around my house since I was four. My mother would usually say “Where’s my handyman at?” whenever there were something to fix. Something about getting the knowledge of turning something useless into its original state just intrigues me. When I was around ten years old, I started skating and it had me actually figure out the board completely and learned how to assemble one which gave me more experience.

When I think of college I picture a beginning to the rest of my life. I want a school that will teach me how to be successful in both life and my career. A place that I can look back in life and think I made the right choice for me.

Just as the institution is eager to continue embracing the ever-changing world of healthcare and medicine, I too embody this same distinguishing characteristic. Throughout my undergraduate experiences I have learned in order to be a steward and servant of the medical profession one must exercise teamwork, service, empathy, accountability, and optimism; all of which coincide with the tenets that are declared by the Meharry Medical College, School of Medicine culture. Attending this medical school would be one of the greatest rewards for my motivation and persistence. I know for certain there would be no greater experience than to be a part of the Meharry Medical College

After conducting some research, LLUSM 's opening in 1909 has diligently been training prospective physicians coupled with service by means of Christian values. Being a distinguished and reputable institution, it combines preparation of a strong Christian foundation, diagnosing patient illness and offsetting future disease via preventative measures. LLUSM 's greeting of universal demographics, offering numerous research opportunities on top of clinical trials makes it well rounded in reaching out to the community. Fueling medical delivery to underserved populations is what drives their mission in teaching prospective physicians the balance between healing, teaching ministry as well as successfully implementing caring and compassion.

Through the many trips that my family has taken to the hospital due to various reasons, I have become fond of the hospital and its many wonders. After all the things that the medical field has done for me and my family, I decided to contribute to my local hospital to volunteer and help out those who pay visits to the hospital. Through my exposure to various clinical populations, I want to improve my ability to serve others in this capacity that can guide me towards the medical profession in the future.

Prior to high school, my uncle was my chemistry teacher. As a food scientist, he was to me a great inventor who knew everything about the magic of taste, texture, and aroma; I still remember his lecture on “good” chocolate and how cocoa butter—solid at room temperature—melts readily in our mouths. Raised on an early appreciation for the power of applied science, I am now driven toward chemical science by a desire to uncover solutions to challenges in the modern world.

With a mission devoted to providing an unparalleled medical education to students, focused upon continuous learning, holistic care and promotion of service to disadvantaged and underserved groups, I believe Meharry Medical College School of Medicine can provide me with a rich medical experience that will lend itself well to my development as both a medical student and aspiring physician.

My compassion for the betterment of society, my patients, my family, friends and myself led directly to my desire to become a PA. Having applied the previous year, the daunting and meticulous task of applying was a bit less draining the second time around. Knowing that we would be growing our family and needing to provide more family support the pressure was apparent to find a program in the close vicinity of family. Having a passion in healthcare has always been of great importance since childhood. Growing with parents full of compassion for their jobs of helping others in the hospital setting and having them as well teach me the importance of people’s lives had exposed me to my great desire of needing to help the lives of others since the age of 1. Being accepted into a clinical program is a golden opportunity that would fulfill this passion. The LCHS Clinical 1 Program is a valuable chance to get hands-on clinical experience in a hospital setting. The clinical rotations that are incorporated in this program will help me know how to act in a professional setting, gain shadowing experience, and expand my knowledge on the different medical career fields.

The Wayne State University School of Medicine has become a top choice medical school for myself due to their focuses on leadership in medicine, community mentoring and outreach, and service based learning. Centered within the urban and evolving city of Detroit, the Wayne State University School of Medicine affords its students the chance to receive their education in, and provide service within, a very rich and diverse patient population. I aspire to perform Nobel Peace Prize winning research while providing compassionate care to my patients. Having both a researcher’s and a physician’s perspectives, I am motivated to bridge the gap between science and medicine by educating patients about their condition and treatment options in appropriate detail. As Albert Einstein said, “[I]f you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.” Being trained as a leader of both science and medicine at UCSF, my understanding will allow me to teach any patient and provide their right to educated healthcare decisions. With my balance of clinical work and research currently, I am excited to go to work every day since each day brings a new learning experience. The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) would be a great fit for me because of its vast amounts of areas I could potentially study. Currently, as I am undecided with a narrowed list of potential majors, LSA would be able to give me a fantastic liberal arts education, allowing me to discover subjects and possible careers which interest me.

It was my pleasure to interview at the distinguished UC Davis School of Medicine. I enjoyed every single moment of my visit. The sense of community at UCDSOM is heartwarming. I had the privilege to interact with enthusiastic medical students, physicians, and faculty members. The interview day gave me deeper insight into the mission and core values of UC Davis School of Medicine. It also confirmed my passion and fit for the school.
