Seminar Assessment #1: Based on what you watched, discuss three things that you learned. After listening to the LP5 Seminar, there were three key subject areas that I learned about. First of all, I learned the difference between Individualism and Collectivism. An individualistic society such as the United States will depend on the values of independence and freedom; whereas, a society that is collectivistic will depend on group consensus and harmony. Each type of society will have values that play an important role in developing the communication styles used in a business message that is targeted to each specific audience. Even though the United States is broadly an individualistic country, there are smaller collectivistic communities …show more content…
We should be aware that there are many differing roles of the male and female in different societies. The United States is for the most part has established itself as a state of gender equality; whereas, in many places overseas the genders have different roles. As an example, in Africa the role of the male is still thought to be primarily the bread-winner and the female role still primarily centered on child bearing and rearing. This used to be the way of thinking in the United States until the World War II era, when the majority of the males went off to war, and many females entered the working industry. The third thing I learned was the difference between International, Multinational, and Transnational business. International business does not mean that the business is located overseas, but rather that the company does a lot of buying and selling overseas, such as with China. A multinational business is a business that is rooted in one location, such as the United States, but has a physical presence around the world, such as McDonalds. A transnational business exists overseas, and moves throughout borders, but does not identify with any specific
Each country is different as each has a different set of beliefs, traditions, and values that they follow and are of importance to them. Within and across different cultures, there is some consistency in the standards of desirable gender role behavior. Males are expected to be independent, straight forward, and competitive whereas females are expected to be more emotional, sensitive, and supportive. These beliefs have changed little over the years in the United States and apparently around the world also. However there is some variation in cultural gender role standards across cultures not just the United
Over the years gender roles have changed for both males and females. The duties, behaviors, and activities we perform on daily basics are different from which male and females would have performed years ago. Male gender role or there stereotypes in the United States consist of being muscular, independent, and athletic. Female gender role or there stereotypes are being caring, sensitive, and the caregiver. The gender roles for male and female have changed over the years, originally men’s duties included working all day for their family. They were the family member that brought in the income in for the family. As for the female roles/duties they would stay home, clean the house, take care of the family, and at the end of the day cook dinner.
Since the beginning of time women were never treated as equals to men. Men have always been seen as stronger and the providers for their families. Women are often viewed as the nurturers and caregivers for their family. Women’s role in society has always been to make sure that everyone is happy and healthy while, men go out and work to make sure that women have the necessities they need to keep everyone happy.
Throughout history, men and women have been viewed in utterly different spheres. Men have been, and still are, believed to be the hard working individual who is in charge of “bringing home the bacon” and supporting the household finically. On the other hand, women are expected to have little to say, the house spotless, supper on the table, the children bathed, fed, in bed, and educated, all while maintaining a flawless hairdo and makeup. These stereotypes seem a bit offensive nowadays, but if you really consider it, it has been and most likely will be this way for our entire existence.
‘Women produce children; women are mothers and wives; women do the cooking, cleaning, sewing and washing; they take care of men and are subordinate to male authority; they are largely excluded from high-status occupations and from positions of power.’ (Haralambous and Holborn 1995, Sociology Themes and Perspectives, HarperCollins Publishers) These stereotypes have come from our past and have now become quite frequently used in today’s society. Women have been seen as the maintainers of the household while the men go out to work and earn a living. “When our ancient ancestors switched to hunting as a way of life, the relationship between males and females was dramatically
Division of the genders through gender roles has been the norm of society since the beginning of man. In order to evaluate the current state of sexism in America, one must first study our history. From the earliest of human evolution men were valued as the hunter, the protector, the leader. Gallantly, spears in hand, they would leave mates and children behind in search of meat for the clan. The whole of his family’s survival resided on his shoulders, and any miss step on his fault was seen as immense failure. Women were left behind to mend the camps, cook the meals, and watch the children. Viewed as the weaker sex, the were left at home with the “gentler” work, only leaving the home for simpler tasks as gathers of berries and roots. As these society grew more seditentary and complex, the introduction of organized societies only perpetuated these gender roles. Although these roles were clearly defined and strictly followed, both were seen as equal and necessary for survival. (CITE)
Society expects men to be brave and strong. They are expected to be in charge of their families by making the most important decisions and supporting them financially meanwhile, women are dependent and cannot achieve much by themselves. One can go back to after 8000 BC and see that men hunted animals meanwhile women stayed at home to care for their children and gather fruits and plants (Reilly). All of the early imposed leadership expectations have been a part of what has shaped the gender expectations in the present society. Even though men and women are capable of performing the same tasks, traditional gender roles keep both genders away from gaining social equality. One can see a difference when both genders are compared in education, employment, child care, domestic duties, and marriage. Although women have made many advances leading up to the amount of equality present in the 21st century, men still manage to have more rights and do not have to fight for equality.
Men are expected to be the head of the household and role models for their children in both cultures and it is frowned upon if the male of the family is not in that position. Women have advanced in many ways over time in society. They are much more well-respected now than in the past. It is still an expectation that a woman is meant to care and provide for her children and take of her home, but men are seen more and more nowadays being more domestic and raising children and taking care of a home on their own rather than relying on a woman to do it for them. There are equal career opportunities for men and women now even though women typically have to work harder to get those opportunities.
Although gender roles have come to a certain amount of change, American society has created greater peer pressure for females. Culture shaped gender, and has allowed social media to establish the ideal male and female creating a harmful environment to grow up in. affects every aspect of our life, from how we feel about ourselves as well as the nature and extent of our participation in social and civic life. In my culture the gender roles consist of the mother working, cooking, cleaning, & yelling. The gender roles of the father consist of working, paying the bills & being laid back. Our expectations are different from the American culture from the language, our up brining, discipline, education, religion &
In recorded history both men and women have been assigned different roles in society, called gender roles, and while the contribution of both genders is important women were not, and still are not, perceived as equal when compared to men. In recent history, beginning in the early 19th century, there have been monumental strides toward gender equality and while the movement for equality and women's rights is heading in a positive direction there is still a lot that needs to be accomplished before full and complete equality between the sexes is reached.

As a manager in the organization that is being acquired, I would give some Price Waterhouse advice to help with the transitional period of the company by building a guiding team. I feel it's fundamental to creating a successful change in any organization. Furthermore, the cohesion of the employees will be more effective overall. During the last two months of the company prior to the change, I would create a team of creditable employees consisting of managers and workers. The goal of this change management team would be to convey a message that is clear to avoid any confusion among the ranks of the employees. Furthermore, the team would help answer questions and give advice for employee's; that will be leaving the company in the near
There have been men and females since the beginning of the human race and the positions of both genders has not dramatically changed over time. In Source 1 it states, “For women the areas of influence are home and children whereas men’s sphere includes work and the outside world.” In Source 1 it explains that women are supposed to stay home or inside and do labor work, take care of the family and children while men work out of the house in the outside world. In Source 1 it says, “Women were passive,

Corporate partnerships have been funding and sponsoring high school’s sporting events. Their advertisements are found all over school campuses, logos are found on players’ uniforms, others place the corporate name on school facilities, and some schools often negotiate exclusive contracts with soft drinks and snacks for vending machines and clothing companies. Since many claim that corporate partnerships are a necessity for monetary purposes, the education system should restrict these corporations by only allowing them to voluntarily sponsor the school, in order to provide a safe environment free from ads and influence for the students.
