Abstract

The Lab One was done on Laboratory Techniques and Measurements. The first experiment with my Lab partner; we got opportunity to experiment how to conduct measurements in length by using metric conversion. We started in cm units and changed into mm by x10, and moving decimal point x1 to right. To find in meter we moved from cm to meter two decimal points to the left or double check our self divided by 100 and all records in data table 1. The second experiment was to measure temperature of how cold and hot tap water can be by using thermometer in Celsius units. Volume Measurements:

The volume of a small test tube and a thin-stemmed pipet were determined in this section of the lab. Water was poured into a small test tube until the water reached the very top edge of the test tube. The test tube was then emptied into a plastic 25 mL graduated cylinder and volume was measured and recorded into data table 3. A think-stemmed pipet was completely filled with water. Drops were carefully counted and emptied into the empty plastic 25 mL graduated cylinder until the water level reached 1 mL. The number of drops in 1 mL was recorded into data table 3. The thin-stemmed pipet had a total volume of 4 mL and that was also recorded into data table 3.

Mass Measurements:

Seven various household objects were chosen to measure using a digital gram scale. Each object’s mass was estimated by lab students and recorded in data table 4. A quarter, ball point pen, rubber bulb, large paper clip, green crayon, house key and a copper penny masses were estimated and recorded in data table 4. Each object was placed on the scale individually and its actual measurement was recorded in data table 4. As we started estimating the household objects we were often not correct in our estimations. As we measured more and more objects, we got better in our estimations by comparing objects with known masses and comparing them with the unknown
