For the issue that I thought would be surprising to me is the issue about concussions and how the coaches had very little knowledge of the symptoms of concussions. I thought coaches would have a broader understanding on concussions and what to look for. But according to this article that there was a lack of concussion management. What also surprised me is that the coaches weren’t consist when it comes to identifying and managing concussions. Which I thought as a football coach you would want to know more about concussions so that you can prevent them and identify them to protect your players specially in football. There was also a lack of education about concussions in smaller schools which made it harder for coaches to identify concussions.
the NFL has provided a new set of rules to prevent concussions. This rule is called targeting, this means the a player that is tackling cannot lead with his helmet. This rule protects the hitter and the ball carrier. but some people think it's making football less aggressive. Other people think it’s a good idea because it could save their lives and the game that they love most. The referees are taking on more responsibility to protect the players. The families of some players have sued the NFL because there loved one has died due to concussions.
Concussions are a problem that nearly all athletes competing in a contact sport will go through. Whether it be boxers, hockey players, skateboarders, or football players, most can usually recognize a concussion. Some say they “See Lights,” or “Hear Ringing,” with over 3000,000 concussions happening in football yearly, concussions can also occur in sports such as gymnastics, cycling, and even martial arts. A concussion by definition is a traumatic brain injury caused by a blow to one’s head by either a fall, bump, or other injury that results in the shaking of the brain within the skull. It is important to understand what a concussion is, so you can prevent possible long term affects to one’s cognitive
The video that I chose to respond to was the concerning concussions in football and boxing. One of the things that the video brought up was that in boxing head injuries during the fights were very common and that was the main reason that boxing has lost so much of its popularity since the 70’s. One thing that I believe could at least reduce some of these injuries is the use of the same protective headgear that is used in training. Something that I learned was that if kids sustain multiple head injuries as a child in a sport such as football, they are much more likely to have memory problems when they are adults. Another thing that I found interesting is that multiple football players have taken their own life as a result of multiple head injuries
Could you image you having a mild concussion? Or even your kid having one? Thinking that it will be gone in a few days, but not knowing that you could have life threatening injury to your brain, just by a blow to the head, by playing a sport. According to Sports Illustrated, in July 2014, a federal judge approved to the NFL, $765 million settlement, after 4,500 former players filled lawsuits against them, but recently, that settlement has been raised to $1 billion, covering more than 20,000 former players for the next 65 years. Professional organizations try there hardest to make the game as safe as possible, but like anything, there's flaws. Organizations like the NFL, NBA, NHL, and even the MLB, are trying to make sports as safe as possible
In "Concussion recovery is slower in girls, mounting evidence suggests" by Diana Kwon, the passage states that concussions occur in female athletes more than twice the time as male athletes. Occuring in the sport of hockey, soccer, and football, where heads are continually clashing. I honestly do not believe that girl or boy impact sports should be banned; i do believe that the athletes should wear helmets. Helmets should be necessary when playing high-risk sports. Female sports do not have as many rules as males do which is why concussions occur more within the female population.
Big or Small: Concussion. Concussions are a head injure acquired from movement of the brain. Some causes of a concussion are “a bad fall, hit to the head, or stopping abruptly” (Elizabeth Smoots, 2015). This injure is most common in American football. In American football, many players receive hard blows to the head or is shoved down to the ground.
“Meh, what’s some brain damage gonna hurt”, was a quote that ultimately lead to the death of John McCrae athlete, Rowan Stringer. She was known to be a “leader” and an “amazing rugby player” on her school varsity rugby team according to various sources. The concept that shocks me the most is that she died from second impact syndrome, revealing her brave, yet poor decision that resulted in her unfortunate death. As you can see, concussions can be life threatening. In order to appropriately handle a concussion, one must be aware of the symptoms of a concussion, how to deal with concussions, and the consequences of concussions.
Football is one of the most popular sports in the world. Over 1 million kids in the u.s participate in tackle football [Pop Warner]. But studies show that 1 in 5 high school students will get a concussion during the season. A concussion damages the brain and can cause memory loss. But most players can recover within a few days but some may be to severe and may not recover for weeks! Former 49ers NFL linebacker Chris Borland quit because of concussions at the age of only 23. Former Patriots NFL Tight End Aaron Hernandez was committed of murder and shortly after committed suicide. Doctors found his brain was severely damaged from football and heavy hits
The participants that was selected for this research were athletes that were practicing and competing during the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 academic school year. A total of fifty seven concussed college athletes were selected from five northeastern universities active in basketball, soccer, lacrosse, baseball, football, wrestling, gymnastics, softball, volleyball, and cheerleading. From the fifty seven collegiate that were selected 36 of them did not have any history while 21 of the athletes have two or more history of concussion. This study did not include athletes with a history of one concussion due to the fact that their sample size provided inadequate data.
The scientist is discovering, that players are being diagnosed with life threatening illness. They are looking at former athletes and finding they have ALS disease. : In order to qualify for the new NFL Settlement Funding program, former players must have received a diagnosis for at least one of the following: - Level 1.5 Neurocognitive Impairment- Level 2.0 Neurocognitive Impairment- Parkinson's- Alzheimer's- ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) aka Lou Gehrig's Disease- Death with CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. (“NLC introduces new NFL concussion funding program”) There are also other diseases that come from concussions. CTE is another disease that former players are suffering from. : Recently, a group of researchers from the Department of
I believe that athletes should be able to stay out longer because it would get them extra time to heal. In the article it states once an athlete gets a concussion they are 3 times more likely to get another one. It is important for the athlete to have a good recovery.
Athletes with head trauma should be required to sit out of the game until their head is fully healed. Although a medical professional signs a paper allowing them to go back into the game, they should not take advantage of that by starting right away. After concussions, teenage athletes should take it easy so their brain has the proper time it needs to heal. Concussions are a serious injury. They can have long lasting impacts and are more likely to reoccur during the same season. In contrast, in order for athletes to return to the game, a doctor has to sign forms allowing them to do so. Doctors are licensed professionals, so the athlete's head injury can't be too severe if they are able to play again. In addition, new equipment that helps prevent concussions is being created.
In the United States alone, athletes account for about 300,000 concussions each year (11 Facts). A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that causes swelling of the brain 's soft tissue and disrupts normal brain function (Concussion). A concussion has potential to impact memory and coordination for the rest of the athlete 's life along with lead to other, more serious, brain injuries. In order for athletes to reduce the effects from concussions, they need to be educated on the symptoms, ways to avoid the injury, and the possible lifelong effects.
Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” explains how prisoners are chained in a cave since childhood with their back to the entrance, unable to turn their necks around. The prisoners have no knowledge of the outside world. Along the cave wall people are carrying different artifacts that cast shadows and echoes. The prisoners would try to identify and name the passing objects. One of the prisoners was freed, however when he stepped outside of the cave the sunlight hurt his eyes.
Healthcare providers need to have quick access to all of a patient's medical information whenever and wherever the patient goes for care. There are systems to help standardize electronic medical records, such as the National Health Information Infrastructure, which would help provide qucik and easy access to the patient's information. The department of Health and Human Services has made an effort to proctect the privacy of all medical records by enacting a Privacy Rule under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. These regulations were designed to help protect a patients' identifiable health information that is provided to health plans, hospitalts, doctors, and any other healthcare providers. The personal information that
