MONOLOGUE: GENTLEWOMAN
Lady Macbeth’s gentlewoman has just seen her wandering the castle at night for the first time prior to Act 5, Scene one. She does not know what to do – she is hesitant to tell the doctor because she is uncertain about what will happen to her career. She knows that the Macbeths killed Banquo partly because of his suspicion regarding King Duncan’s murder, so now she is uncertain about what they would do to her if she said anything. She is concerned about the natural order of the world, and what has happened due to the divine right of kings. The gentlewoman is holding a candle, sitting down on a chair in the centre of the stage. There are Rosary Beads on the table next to her.
What should I do?

What if she heard me? (Quieter, looking around) What if she heard? Then what would happen to me?
I would have to confess the truth to the people that may be able to help. Those who could relight the flame of her candle to cure her. My lady speaks of such horrible thoughts since His Majesty left. They are a serpent that has managed to entwine into the deepest parts of her mind and squeeze the last of her sane thoughts out of her. Her guilt must plague her very conscience. How many lives have they taken now? Two? Three? Or are there more that I don’t yet know about.
My mother was so eager for me to become their waiting woman. She fussed around me, just like a mother cat, for an entire week before I left. God, I miss that. She was just over the moon for me d what a great chance this was. I would be the happiest girl in the world… Well, that hasn’t really happened, has it? (Talking faster and working herself up) Now I’m here, and I’m terrified what they might do to me if… What if they find out? What would they do?
(Pause, trying to calm herself down. Looks around to see if anyone has heard her. There is no one there, so she walks to the side of the room to star out the window. She places her candle on the window ledge next to
I,Malcolm, let Macbeth do anything to be king. While I watch him ruin his legacy.Macbeth proves his loyalty to Duncan by serving him. Macbeth states, " the service and the loyalty I owe in doing it pays itself(I.iv.25) To avoid being taken advantage of, Macbeth must demonstrate that he is not weak. He fulfills this by taking the cowardly way out and murdering Duncan King of Scotland. He acts out because he is jealous and feels as if he deserves to be king. At this point once Macbeth displays that he is no longer loyal to his once King of Scotland, who said " for brave Macbeth-well he deserves that name"(I.ii.95). A disloyal Macbeth cannot accept the promotion to thane of Cawdor, so he get greedy and does the unthinkable. Macbeth says, "Let not light see my black and deep desires: the eye wink at the hand yet let that be which the eye fears, when it is done to see"(I.ii.50-53). These words reveal Macbeth's deep desire to be king, after King Duncan announces that his son Malcolm will be the one to take the throne after him.
Visualize being in MacBeth’s place, you are announced Thane of Cawdor after your heroic leadership on the battlefield, why would you thirst for a higher rank? Although you may be content with your position, there are many reasons why you would want more power. Your rank becomes very close to that of a king, so you decide to go for it, after all, all you have to do to be king is to kill Duncan. As your sight of kingship would become realistic, your rapacity grows, and you start making nefarious decisions that would affect your disposition. As an effect of your changed mindset, your nobles start to become suspicious that you are deranged. Little do they know they are all pawns in your game of life and your scheme to become king is going impeccably
Shakespeare’s play ‘Macbeth’ is about the leading male protagonist succumbing to his ambition and need for power. Though Macbeth is liable for his own actions, he is not solely responsible for the events that eventually result in his downfall. Macbeth is corrupted by his wife, Lady Macbeth, as well as the three weird sisters. Macbeth’s contribution towards his downfall is his strong ambitious nature. Lady Macbeth is the person who induces Macbeth to assassinate King Duncan. The three weird sisters (witches) play with Macbeth’s ambitious nature and sense of security. Macbeth’s downfall is due to himself and two external factors.
First came the pride, an overwhelming sense of achievement, an accomplishment due to great ambition, but slowly and enduringly surged a world of guilt and confusion, the conscience which I once thought diminished, began to grow, soon defeating the title and its rewards. Slowly the unforgotten memories from that merciless night overcame me and I succumbed to the incessant and horrific images, the bloody dagger, a lifeless corpse. I wash, I scrub, I tear at the flesh on my hands, trying desperately to cleanse myself of the blood. But the filthy witness remains, stained, never to be removed.

The moon is melancholically moving towards the horizon and the sun is rising mechanically. A beam of light suddenly shined Duncan’s body as if it knew what happened last night. The dense air is penetrating the room. I couldn’t barely move nor breathe.
Soliloquy isn't often seen in regular chapter books; even though, it gives a great insight to what the character is thinking. Soliloquy is when a character voices their thoughts or feelings out loud, mostly when they think they're alone. In "Macbeth" one of the better known soliloquy is when a dagger appears before Macbeth and he starts to talk to himself. The dagger prompts Macbeth to question his sanity, then address the soon-to-be death of King Duncan : " Or art thou but A dagger of the mind, a false creation, Proceeding from the heat-oppressèd brain?" (Macbeth 2.1.38-40)- " It is the bloody business which informs Thus to mine eyes" ( Macbeth 2.1.48-49).
I woke up at 7AM to continuous, banging on the front door. Next thing I know ten policemen have barged into my room. I’ve not been able to stop replaying the words that came out of my mom’s mouth. They were quivering but sharp, not like the normal sweet and soft sound of her voice in the morning.
In act III, Shakespeare showed us a different side of Macbeth through his soliloquy. Shakespeare painted Macbeth’s character as a heroic war soldier, but throughout act 3 his character faces a downfall and Macbeth let his greed and ambition overshadow his heroic image. In Macbeth’s soliloquy, he reveals his deep thoughts and his desire to kill Banquo in order for himself to become king. To Macbeth, nothing can make him feel threatened, except for the noble Banquo, Banquo always takes risks and is a man with clever mindset. Macbeth’s thirst for power and to become king has dominated his ability to make smart and rational decisions.
Don’t hear my voice, road will tell where I am going, by breaking the darkness.
What have I done? This is my entire fault. All of this would have never happened if I…If I did not force my husband to do something so monstrously evil. Now I’m tormented by this guilt, the guilt of killing not an enemy but a friend. I would never thought it would result in this, after he killed Duncan by manipulating him, his desire of power grows stronger and stronger.
Lady Macbeth is the most interesting and complex character in Shakespeare's play, Macbeth. She is, in fact, the point on which the action pivots: without her there is no play.
Today, I stand before a nation in mourning, grieving the passing of its King, Macbeth. He shall surely be remembered in history as a noble and courageous soldier and leader who fought with a fierce loyalty and belief in Scotland. Although his reign was not trouble-free or lengthy, Macbeth inspired a unique and individual pride in his country and made every decision with careful thought, holding firmly to his ideals and principles to the very end. Scotland has lost a distinctive and unrivalled leader and those of us who knew him personally are now without a friend whose character shall always be remembered.
I wanted to yell and cry and punch something hard. But the mental pain of having uncovered this secret would be worse than any injury I could inflict on myself or on my pillow. My so-called-mother had lied to me, and I had only discovered it now, fourteen years too late. In deep, gulping breaths, I began rapidly firing questions at the woman’s paled face: “How could you do this to me?
I begin to start back to the carriage my room is in, limping ever slightly towards the door, before hearing her call out again, and I’m still surprised, but less so.
