From the very start of the play we are told about how brave, valiant and noble Macbeth is, how he fought for his country and his king. This is a significant theme in the play because it helps us to know what Macbeth stands for and who he is as a person. The important decision that will be discussed throughout this essay is Macbeth deciding to kill king Duncan and how Lady Macbeth helped persuade him to do it.
At the start of the play Macbeth and Banquo come across three witches who give them each two prophecies. They tell Macbeth that he will become Thane of Cawdor and then rise to king. Naturally Macbeth does not believe them, though, not even two hours later he is crowned the Thane of Cawdor. This causes him to stop doubting the witches’

He knows that if he kills Duncan and is caught he will face the death penalty. However, if he does not get caught there is a significant chance that he will become king. One of the major reasons he is hesitant could be because he is very religious and knows that if he does actually go through with killing the King he will face punishment from the gods. This is shown when Macbeth tells the audience “Stars, hide your fires, let not light see my black and deep desires,” when talking about wanting to kill the Prince of Cumberland and the King of Scotland. In the end he decides not to kill King Duncan. He procedes to tell lady Macbeth that he will not go through with their plan of murder, but she manipulates and insults him until he changes his mind. Unlike Lady Macbeth, he still feels that by doing this he is betraying his king and his god. Macbeth deciding to kill Duncan impacts the play in a very large way, if Lady Macbeth had not been such a strong female figure he would not have been persuaded into murdering the king. Our perceptions of Macbeth change with this decision, because from the start of the play we’ve been told that macbeth is a noble, and brave warrior who would fight for his king, an example of this is “All’s to weak for brave Macbeth - well he deserves that name - disdaining fortune, with his brandished steel, which smok’d with bloody
In William Shakespeare's play, "Macbeth" a man named Macbeth, who holds the title Thane of Glamis, stumbled upon three witches. The three witches tell Macbeth " All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth that shalt be king hereafter!" (1.3.49-50) At first Macbeth just brushes it off as nonsense, but then shortly after Macbeth is given a new title which happens to be, Thane of Cawdor, which was the title the witches had called him. After hearing this it makes him jump head first in believing that what the witches had told him was a prophecy, and that he would soon become the next king of Scotland, (the country where Macbeth lives.) Macbeth then sends a letter to Lady Macbeth to tell her the news about the prophecy, which
Macbeth loves Lady Macbeth too much that he would do anything for her. He decides to kill Duncan in order to prove to her how brave and fearless he really is and how he is not afraid to stand up to the prophecy. Macbeth shows a change of heart that he is going to go ahead with his plan. Without Lady Macbeth, Macbeth wouldn’t have been convinced enough to kill
My aim in this essay is to explain what Act 1, scene 7 tells us about the characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, and what troubles does Macbeth come across and how does Lady Macbeth persuade him to murder King Duncan.
He felt that Scotland needed a king who worked hard and would literally die for his country; except for becoming misguided along the way. Initially he is expressed as a honourable man, beloved by the king and admired by fellow thanes across Scotland; however viewers quickly see how his demeanor changes when he is convinced by the witches and his wife that he must be king which ultimately leads to his demise. The need for power quickly corrupts him and leads him to sacrifice his honour for his pride. How easily Macbeth made the decision to kill king Duncan reflects back upon how leaders can become corrupt and their original intentions may become clouded. Originally he wanted to wait and see who would become king; for he would initially never go against Duncan out of love and loyalty to him.
When the three witches delivered the prophecies in the first act they hailed Macbeth is “Thane of Cawdor”, “Thane of Glamis”, and also claimed that shall soon become king. While Macbeth is bewildered and
In the beginning of Macbeth, Macbeth is hesitant. Lady Macbeth, being ruthless, tries to convince Macbeth to kill King Duncan, but his conscience is stronger than his ambition. He feels that the king is at his palace in “double-trust”; he is

Macbeth is intrigued by their prophecies and his ambition to be king emerges. After this, the overarching theme of the play, the danger of ambition, is evident. It is Macbeth’s dangerous sense of ambition that causes him to stab King Duncan while he is asleep, in order to obtain his role as king.
But despite Macbeth’s desire to take the throne, he does not want to kill Duncan. What pushes Macbeth over the edge is Lady Macbeth. She tells Macbeth to follow his ambitions and kill Duncan. She says that murdering Duncan is not a sin, and that it is all worth it for the crown. These words from Lady Macbeth’s mouth are what made Macbeth decide to follow through and commit murder. “I am settled and bend up each corporal agent to this terrible feat.” (1.7.92-93). Macbeth will do the act, but he is very reluctant to do so. In conclusion, Macbeth’s ambitions and his loyalty towards Lady Macbeth are huge factors for why Macbeth was torn, and why he decided to kill Duncan.
These prophecies severely change the lives of both soldiers. The three witches surprise Macbeth and Banquo but tell Macbeth the prophecy of him being given the position of Thane of Cawdor. Secondly speaking, ¡§All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be King hereafter!¡¨ (Act 1, scene iii p.12) They then tell Banquo that his sons will be kings but he will never rule a King. This news frightens Macbeth and both try to put it in the back of their minds, thinking of it as a prank. This is until Ross, one of the kings men, greets Macbeth and Banquo and gives great news to Macbeth in these words:
The purpose of this essay is to describe Lady Macbeth’s role in the play and discuss why this makes her the most fascinating character. Her evil doings are the main reasons why she dominates the plot so greatly. These include the following: considers Macbeth to be a wimp not wanting to murder; letting Macbeth fulfill her plan; taking control over Macbeth’s thoughts and actions; turning Macbeth from a loyal man to a greedy, coldhearted human being. Also Lady Macbeth’s transformation in character and her relationship
The Play “Macbeth” by William Shakespeare is shaped by supernatural forces with the use of the weird witches, the apparition of the ghost, and the floating dagger. These forces lead Macbeth to act in the way he did and add suspense to the play. The play opens with the three witches, and later on Macbeth and Banquo encounter them. They prophesized that Macbeth will be promoted to Thane of Cawdor, and then become King of Scotland. In addition to that, Banquo was told that his sons shall be kings, but never himself. Macbeth was skeptical about the prophesies, but until some of King Duncan’s men came to inform Macbeth that that he was to be named Thane of Cawdor due to the betrayal of the previous and condemned to death. Then Lady Macbeth
In the beginning of the play, the witches make three prophecies. First, that Macbeth will become the Thane of Cawdor. The second part of the prophecy is that Macbeth will become King. The third prophecy being that Banquo will be father to future kings. When Macbeth first hears the prophecy, Duncan holds the position as king. King duncan is also a very loved king by his people. Macbeth and Duncan even have a good relationship. Macbeth is Duncan’s greatest war hero and because of Macbeth’s great success in battle, Duncan rewards him by promoting him to the position of Thane of Cawdor. With this promotion, Macbeth realizes that the witches first prophecy was true. With this realization, Macbeth’s head begins to fill with thoughts of killing King Duncan to speed up the process so that he can become king. When he tells his wife of the prophecies and his promotion, she becomes extremely
seen nor heard speak and she tells them to fill her to the brim with
It is human nature to be intrigued by all things mystical and dangerous. We fear the unknown but seek it nonetheless out of greed. Most of Shakespeare’s works hold an element of the supernatural and the play Macbeth is no exception. In this play we see a contemporary morality that warns of the dangers of trafficking with instruments of darkness; the witches in the play prophesize of Macbeths future as king, and Macbeth blinded by his hunger for power fails to recognize that the witches prophecies are luring him to evil . In act 1 scène 3 we see the effect that the excitement of the prophecies has had on his imagination as he begins to contemplate murdering the king. As Macbeth gets closer to
