The story of Macbeth chronicles the rise and fall of protagonist Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. They schemed, lied, and plotted their way to the throne only to be taken down at the end of the play. This married duo underwent an incredible and fascinating change in mindset and behavior as seen when comparing the beginning of the play to the end. The play shows the change in Macbeth by first calling him a man of kindness to the ruthless king hell-bent on destruction, it also shows how Lady Macbeth went from a wicked and cruel woman to one full of remorse and guilt, and it is further heightened as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s changes have an inverse correlation with one another. This is significant because she is one of the main factors that turns the statement she made towards Macbeth considering kindness and turns him into a rampaging ruler. For instance, she is seen calling on the spirits “That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, And fill me from the crown to the toe top-full Of direst cruelty!” (Act 1.5 Lines 42-44). She is calling on the spirits to make her a cruel mistress capable and full of evil intent. In contrast, she is seen sleepwalking in the final acts of the play where she vents about her previous acts taken against various people and saying things such as, “Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him” (Act 5.1 Lines 43-44). She is filled his so much grief and sorrow over her action that she is admitting them and revealing crucial evidence against herself. They use a variety of different methods to not only gain their status but also to maintain it including murder or assassination. The changes that they went through are contradictory as one went from refusing to murder to freely and frequently killing people meanwhile the other went from ruthless to remorseful. Shakespeare uses Lady Macbeth and Macbeth in the play Macbeth to show the change that can happen to people by first introducing Macbeth as a man full of the milk of human kindness to a man known as a murderous and vicious man of deceit, by setting up Lady Macbeth as an instrument of evil by first showing her as asking to be more evil yet later she is shown to be distraught over her actions and is trying desperately get it off her hands, by showing the difference between the characters when one compares them from the beginning or the play to the
