This research will be about concern about the pollution of Lake Macatawa, in Holland Michigan, which is leading to a clean-up effort. Preliminary research has led me to a lot of information through government regulations and newspaper articles. Because the funding for the cleanup of this lake will be done with public money, it makes sense that it would be discussed in the local paper, The Holland Sentinel. The Sentinel has a few stories, both about the cleanup through public funds, and the stories that began to rise a little bit more recently, the funding through private donations. (General view of water pollution) Another Source that I have come across in my research, that I believe will be of great value is the book entitled, Clean Water, Quality Recreation for Michigan. This book should give a broader and general view of water pollution, specifically in the state of Michigan to my …show more content…
However, instead of giving me a broad view on the benefits of having a clean water supply, not only for drinking, but for recreation, this source should give me a broad view on the issues directly connected with pollution. This source should give a strong evidence as to who is responsible for the pollution in Lake Macatawa. (Clean-up funding) In order to properly discuss the funding of this cleanup, I need to research the actual laws about how a cleanup of this nature would occur. The “Clean Water Fund,” is a portion of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. This state-wide code, provides me with the information I need about how something like this is funded, specifically in the state of Michigan. From the summary and purpose of this code, to the in depth definitions, to all the other intricate parts to this code, it is all located here under code R 324.8901 through 324.8920 which is available through the database,
Pollution of Lake Huron has been over the years either through direct point sources or through non-point indirect sources (Saxena 1116). Direct point sources include sewage treatment firms and industries, which direct their wastes directly into Lake Huron and its tributaries. Nonpoint sources indirectly pollute water from the Lake, and majorly caused by man's activities and land policies applied by the man.
This summer one scientific thing I did was use a water mat on Lake Winnipesaukee. A water mat is a giant raft that floats on the surface of the water. It's constructed from the same styrofoam type material that a pool noodle is made out of. It is extremely versatile and can be used in many different ways. The way that I enjoyed using it the most was to jump from our pontoon boat onto the mat. I would make my way to the edge of the boat, steady myself, and leap, landing directly on top of the green float. The impact of the jump made my feet feel sore for a few seconds. When I was ready, I would hurdle myself off the mat and climb back onto the boat. While this activity does require a lot of skill, it requires a lot of science as well.
The Battle of Lake Champlain was an important victory because it created a dent in the British plan to invade from the North and it ultimately convinced the British to surrender the War of 1812, which caused the US to gain worldwide respect. To begin, the British had been trying to invade America from the south, but they had very little success. They then decided to try and invade from the North, using Plattsburg, a city on the shores of Lake Champlain, as their headquarters for the invasion. This is why it was so vital that the US won the Battle of Lake Champlain because it hurt the British plan to invade by destroying a major part of their plan. This also convinced them that it would be too difficult and expensive for the benefit they would
Introduction: The purpose of this research is to determine whether there has been a change in the overall water quality of the Lake Tarpon Basin, and if so, whether the quality has improved or worsened. The variables that will determine whether the quality has changed are: nutrients (phosphates and nitrates) and dissolved oxygen (DO). The expected changes are lower dissolved oxygen levels (from the already low levels), higher nitrogen levels (from the already high nitrogen levels), and the state qualifications still are not met for nutrients and dissolved oxygen (Levy, Flock, Burnes, Myers, Weed, River 2010). This topic relates to environmental management because the changes in water quality would be due to pollution, which relates to the question “How does human activity lead to the pollution of water stores?” The hypothesis that will be tested is that Lake Tarpon’s water quality will have worsened since the last measurements by Levy, Flock, Burnes, Myers, Weed, and Rivera in 2010.
There are two courses in Lake Chelan which boast panoramic lake views: Lake Chelan Golf Course and Bear Mountain Ranch Golf Course. If you are willing to drive a short distance north you will find the Gamble Sands Golf Course and the Alta Lake Golf Course, which is a new award-winning course, in Brewster, or the family-friendly Bear Creek Golf Course in Winthrop which features breathtaking views of the Cascades.
Lake Champlain is a natural freshwater lake found in upstate New York and Vermont, and which also runs into Quebec, Canada. It is located in the Champlain Valley between Vermont's Green Mountains and the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. This article is about Lake Champlain and the towns and sites it encompasses.
What would happen if we weren’t able to get ahead of these problems? We may just be finding that out for ourselves pretty soon. Michigan’s freshwater is constantly being polluted and poisoned, and it’s almost always by it’s own people. So what can we do to be sure our water is clean and protected? I have looked into detail about the different problems that are threatening Michigan’s water.
Did you know that the Ohio State Park of Buckeye Lake once was a well known amusement park called “Beautiful Buckeye Lake?” In present day the lake is overfilled with dead fish, construction equipment, and rubble, causing a damper on the community on what used to be a historical landmark, is now causing health risk and endangerment to wildlife. Problems like toxic algae blooms arose and then the dam was astonishingly weak, Buckeye Lake was at its worse. The only solution for pre- and post- rehabilitation is to continue to dredge, reduce the agricultural runoff by riparian buffer or build in-stream sediment traps or wetlands, and informing the community about the water pollution issue. We as a community can only do this
There have been many discussions involving the drainage of Lake Powell, but with each argument there is reasons why we should keep it or why we shouldn’t. In the year of 1963 Lake Powell officially became a recreational park and known as one of the largest man-made reservoir in the United States. The dam was built for the advantage of having water stored for other states who might need it. In the year 1963 two diversion tunnels in the Glen Canyon dam were closed in order to begin Lake Powell to fill. Throughout the years the water levels of Lake Powell have lowered, causing people to worry that this lake is diminishing rather than a benefitting the environment. By 1980 Lake Powell was at its ‘full pool’ which was
The Dow Chemical Company needs to be held responsible for their role in mercury pollution in Lake Michigan. The mercury in the lake has not only directly affected the water but it has also indirectly affected certain parts of the Lake Michigan wildlife. Because of Dow Chemical’s part in this pollution they need to be held responsible for the water that was affected as well as the wildlife that was affected. The Great Lakes are a major resource for the states that boarder it and benefit from the water for drinking, not to mention countless other people who benefit because of fishing and trade that occurs within the lakes. Sadly, the Great Lakes, and specifically, Lake Michigan have been plagued with a history of pollution. This research will
The freshwater that is available for use is becoming more contaminated with each use. The Clean Water Act of 1972 put in order more regulations in regards to wastewater and the dumping of it into rivers and lakes. Multiple-step filtration systems have been used since then to better remove toxins from wastes before it enters freshwater. In a personal interview with Moe Crabtree, Nature Resource Specialist for the Washington Department of Natural Resources, I learned some measures taken to keep water clean. Her common job is to setup timber sales which includes much precaution of rivers and streams. I asked her- “In what ways do you have to avoid water contamination?” she replied, “we have to divert culverts at minimum one hundred feet from
When we think about water pollution what comes to mind? have we ever thought about how water pollution affects plants and human life? In this essay i'll talk about in what ways water pollution affects these topics today. Over two thirds of Earth's surface is covered by water less than a third is taken up by land so the condition of the water and how we keep it is pretty important. All living organisms need water to survive on this earth but what happens if the water is no longer clean or usable?
Water pollution is a serious problem for the environment. It should be solved on a large scale at the level of states and federal governmental levels. If the public becomes more aware of environmental problems, it can be part of the solution. For example the responsibility of the Pacific Garbage Patch is on the conscience of everyone who throws garbage in the water (Marine Insight).
In Kansas pollution is an enormous issue and it affects more than just the air supply we breath, but also the water we drink and the even the soil we walk on. There are many agencies that monitor and try to prevent the pollution as much as possible, but this issue is too large to face head on. The three major problems are pollution to the water, air and also the land. In the following paragraphs it will explain in what ways we pollute our water, air and earth and then also it will tend to the side of how we are trying to stop or regulate the pollution. If we do not make a stand and want to change the way we trash our world then it will hurt in generations to come.
Abstract At the beginning of the paper a brief explanation on the importance of clean water is illustrated. Proceeding with descriptions of water pollution and reasoning’s demonstrating why it is presently a common issue in the United States. Understanding how the quality of the environment becomes affected from poor water quality is imperative to know and is proven throughout the paper. The paper slightly touches on the growth of human population and technology advancement, which are two main factors that contribute to the increase of water pollution. Understanding the source of pollutants is the main focus in the paper, in hopes that readers will grasp the best method to eliminate pollution. Acidification, contamination and overuse are major pollutants that degrade water quality. The continuous procedures could bring forth several outcomes that can greatly affect our lives and the environment. Current environmental issues, preferably the Gulf of Mexico disasters are included to show how these mentioned water pollutants are being carried out by human activities and how they have affected the environment, specifically the marine ecosystem.
