In L.A there is a battle, a battle of who is the best basketball team in the city. The Los Angeles Lakers or the Los Angeles Clippers. This whole rivalry started in 1984 when the Clippers moved to L.A. The Clippers originally played their games in the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, while the Lakers were winning championships in the Forum. In their first matchup the Lakers won 108-103, and with that a “crosstown rivalry was born” the Associated Press wrote. While the Clippers were rebuilding, the Lakers had put together a super-team dubbed “Showtime.” With Magic Johnson running the whole thing and 38 year old Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the post, and with that duo the Lakers won the championship in the 84-85 season. By 1986, the Lakers were still undefeated against the Clippers. Magic Johnson also won his first MVP award. In 1987, the Lakers won the The Finals again, winning their 4 title in franchise history, and their second since the Clippers moved to L.A. In the 1987-88 NBA season the Lakers won another Finals against the Detroit Pistons a.k.a the Bad Boys, going back to back. In 1992, the Clippers had their first winning season since 1978-79 and their first playoff appearance since 1976. The Lakers, on the other hand, struggled with Magic Johnson’s retirement after he tested positive for AIDS. The Clippers ended a 27 game losing streak in the Forum, and finished with a better record than the Lakers that season. …show more content…
The Lakers also signed free-agent Shaquille O’Neal from the Orlando Magic. Shaquille O’Neal lead the Lakers to a record of 56-26, averaging 26.2 ppg and 12.5 rpg. Before the 1999-2000 season the Lakers hired former Chicago Bulls coach Phil Jackson, who brought the infamous triangle offense to L.A. In Phil Jackson’s first season the Lakers won their first Finals since
It’s interesting to see the selling points of each organization and how they try and fill the stadium. The Lakers do this with the tradition of winning and glamour of celebrities that come to a Lakers game. The Clippers were selling the consumer on the rise of Blake Griffin and his highlight dunks.
Leading the Bulls to another three-peat Jordan retired a second time in 1999 ending his career on a high note. Labor disputes between NBA players and team owners, and the eventual breakup of the Bulls dynasty were the reasons he called it quits. After a brief hiatus from basketball Jordan returned to the NBA in 2000 not as a player, but as part owner and president of basketball operations for the Washington Wizards. His record as the president of the Washington Wizards was horrendous. His time running the Wizards began in 2000, and he had the final say in personnel matters, such as drafting mega-bust Kwame Brown with the number one pick in 2001. Seeing the rise of young stars like Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, and Tracy Mcgrady, and the decline of his status as a player Jordan decided he wanted to return to the court. The next year he began comeback number three. After two disappointing seasons with the Wizards Jordan retired for the last time in 2003. Assuming he would get his job back as the team president, but after doing such a terrible job at team management and evaluating talent team owner Abe Pollin dismissed Jordan. In his three-plus seasons as an executive and player with the Washington Wizards, Jordan's teams were 110-179.
First, a list of his accomplishments. Kobe was drafted out of highschool at the age of seventeen, broke into the league by winning the Slam Dunk contest in his rookie season, and by age of twenty-five he was a three time world champion. He was the youngest person to be named a NBA All-Star at the age of nineteen. The combination of his talents with the talents of Shaquille O’Neal was the greatest “one-two punch” of all time. That is an objective fact. Shaq himself has even admitted that had the duo stayed together after the 2004 season, they most certainly would have gone on to win additional world championships, but Kobe didn’t need Shaq. When it was all said and done, Kobe ended up with five rings to his name to O’Neals four - all five with the Lakers I might add.
The bulk of his estate comes from playing basketball as well as endorsements and sponsorships. He played basketball in the NBA for nineteen years from 1992-2011 for six different teams: the Los Angeles Lakers, Orlando Magic, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, and Boston Celtics. He made almost $300 million in player salary during his career. O'Neal won four championships in his career, including a three-peat with the Lakers from 2000-2002, and he won his fourth as a member of the Miami Heat in 2006, the franchise's first title in their history. As a member of team USA, O'Neal has won two gold medals, one in 1994 and the other in 1996. His number 34 was retired by the Los Angeles Lakers, with whom he spent eight successful years of his career with. He is one of three players to win an NBA MVP, Finals MVP, and All-Star game MVP in the same year (2000); the other players to do this are Willis Reed in 1970 and Michael Jordan (1996, 1998).
In just their second season in Los Angeles, the dodgers won their second world series pennant beating the white soxin six games in 1959. Lead by the domination of Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale, the dodgers captured three national leauge pennants in the 60's, and captured two more world series championships, sweeping the Yankees and barley beating the Twins in seven games. The dodgers won four more national leauge pennants in 1966,1974, 1977, and 1978. but losing every world series appearence. They went on to win a world series in 1981 thanks to pitching sensation fernando valenzuela. The early 1980's were affectionatly dubbed as "fernandomania." In 1988, another pitching star, Oral Hershiser, again lead them to another world series pennant, helped by one of the most historical home runs of all time, by their INJURED star Kirk Gibson who had hurt Both of his legs. That would be his only playing time in the series.
The biggest winner of this year's baseball season might be Houston and Los Angeles. Pulling the series out to seven games has really impacted the economy of both towns. Plus the excitement of the competition has people humming as many are in a good mood. The games have brought people closer together and created a bond in communities where life seems to be less than predictable. Who knew Dodger fever could be a good thing to be infected with? Now we only need to see who wins this crazy
I. Athletics St. Louis is a better city, as can be seen by comparing athletic teams. Some will argue that Kansas City has the better baseball team, as the Kansas City Royals
With new players on each team coming into form and becoming the face of each side, the rivalry grows and so does the competition between both sides. With players from the Dodgers like Corey Seager and Julio Urias coming into form and making appearances against the Giants; this competitive rivalry heats up even more because young guys can feel the tension between the two sides. For the Giants, players like Joe Panik and Trevor Brown have shown their brief talent in the past few years and will prominently affect the future of this rivalry. With all baseball aside, both of these teams play in some of the best places to play baseball and have some of the biggest fan bases in the league and that only helps this rivalry get stronger and stronger. The thing that helps these fan bases grow bigger and bigger each year, is the incredibly talented new players that are brought into each team each year and this will continue to happen for years to
The NL West is one of the most contested divisions in the major leagues, and the top two teams in that division are the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers and Giants have always had a rivalry all the way back to the time when they both still played in New York. In today’s game, they are two of the best teams in the major leagues and are considered contenders for the Commissioner’s Trophy or winning the World Series. Both teams have followed similar paths and have ended up playing a tug-o-war for the top spot in the NL West.
Lebron James and Kobe Bryant are two of the most explosive players in the NBA today. Each player has his own playing style that separates him from the rest of the league. Both players have their own career achievements, endorsements, and personal life stories behind the game. If you ask anybody, the comparison between these two players is great. It is a never ending debate between who is better because both players have something different to bring to the table. Side by side on paper, both players seem dominant and may one day end up in the basketball hall of fame. But as individuals, side by side, each has a different but similar life.
Season Summary: The Sacramento Kings had about as successful of a season as you could hope for considering they had three different head coaches. Malone was fired just 24 games into his second season with the team.Tyrone Corbin was named interim coach, and the team went 7-21 during his time in the position.George Karl finished the season as the Kings head coach with an 11-19 record.
It is the typical rivalry that separates the fine state of California right down the middle. It tends to claim superiority between Northern California and Southern California. Something that is very prominent, and usually occurs between the different colleges and/or sports teams, such as the Giants vs. Dodgers or UCLA vs. UC-Berkeley, but does not happen to be the case this time around. As discussed in a recent debate, the battle for supremacy happens to be between which of the regions is California's food capital, Los Angeles or San Francisco!!! First up, we have Los Angeles, the taco capital of America. Although L.A. may not be the capital of California (Sacramento), it is definitely
Western Conference fourth leading team Los Angeles Clippers crushed the league’s second best ballclub of the season San Antonio Spurs, who was without the team’s top forward Kahwi Leonard 105-86 at the Staples Center Thursday night.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) has transformed over the many of years as an organization and a brand, into a multibillion-dollar business that draws thousands and thousands of fans to each and every game. Many contributing factors have made the NBA what it is today, but the main cause of this gain in interest is the ultimate rivalry between two remarkable players, Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Larry “the Legend” Bird. The battling rivalry amongst these individuals is comparable to the feud of Coca Cola and Pepsi, or, Star Wars and Star Trek. During the era of modern television, and the still and ever present racial bigotry, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird helped redefine the game of basketball and popularity of the NBA with their
I compared Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons with two NBA teams in Los Angeles, Lakers and Clippers.
