Alex Tizon is an immigrant from the Philippines. Alex describes the challenge his parents had of not knowing any English and having to adapt by changing from their native tongue to cope with society, as he demonstrates in the article Land Of The Giants as “loss of a world and the beginning of bewilderment”. Alex Tizon’s Article is hugely relatable to most immigrants because almost all those who are immigrants at one point have to face these challenges, including myself.In “Land of the Giants” written by Alex Tizon, he shows that immigrants have plenty of different characteristics that are often modified to go along with society such as personality, physical features, as well as a completely different culture . Immediately, Americanization became Alex’s ambition towards the end of the article and it all commenced with a change in personality. As we read Alex Tizon changed in some way all three of these by trying home remedies to change his Asian characteristics. For example to achieve a more western look he would hang off a pull up bar to stretch his body to make him look taller. Also his personality was modified so he can make new relationships with other white people by removing his accent to have more flow in his conversations with other English speakers. As well adjusting from his old Filipino beliefs to the new American culture He changed his temperament to a more calm and civil state so he could be less of a troublemaker than his father.
