Language is not static, it is capable of change over time and distance. Language can be seen through diagrams and images, sign language and even more basic codes such as smoke signals and flags. It is typically thought of as heard, although this can be in person with facial and body language to serve as a guide, or through a recording where only the tone and pitch indicate the implied meaning. There are XXX number of languages throughout the world, some similar and many quite diverse. In many countries around the world English is accepted as the dominant language. Each country adapts and adds to the language, allowing it to reflect their culture and locality and serve their purposes of communication. Standard English, sometimes referred to as ‘correct or proper English’, is the formal written language used for academia, expected in universities, research papers and professional workplaces. Often, different social class and age groups within a country or community will speak in a different manner, such as a dialect or slang, reflecting upon their individual situation and that of their family and social groups. Every country, community, cultural group and individual uses and refines their own dialect of English to communicate effectively with those around them.
