The language and structure of the Laws of Manu seem to predominantly target women as the sacred laws establish and dictate a woman’s actions over the course of her lifetime. From their birth to their death, women must strictly dedicate their entire lives to their husband and children. The Laws of Manu act as sacred principles for Hindus to worship just as the Ten Commandments act as sacred principles for all Jews and Christians to worship. For the most part, I believe the author, Manu, uses a commanding and effective language to ensure his laws will be followed as intended. Personally, I think the language of the Laws of Manu is somewhat contradictory as the laws lack clarity and consistency. The first law implies that women must always be
“The term masculine and feminine are used symmetrically only as a matter of form, as on legal papers”(De Beauvoir) The only difference between men and women is their reproductive organs. Therefore, the laws of the land should be fair and applicable to both sexes.
Sadly, views of people in some of countries nowadays is still as foggy and limited as the people’s views thousand years ago. Having studied these laws, we learned that we need to respect women and honour them. They are very well deserved to be treated fairly, and to be looked up to. Hopefully in the near future, the legal system in Muslim countries will be changed in a positive way to foster the roles of women in the society. Women should have more freedom and should not considered as a tool of labor or a slave for
Throughout centuries of human existence, women have been deemed as inferior to men in multiple different cultures and religions. Men have developed a norm to be the individual who carries out duties to help maintain a stable life for himself and the family in which he is providing for. Because of this fundamentalist approach towards how society should be, women’s rights have been suppressed throughout political, social, and cultural actions. The Islamic religion in particular, is fond of abusing the rights of women and empowering the rights of men in such a way that it has created a permanent existence of conflict within countries who follow Islam. In fact, in the Quran it states that women must have lesser authority than men, therefore their
In the case of religion and government, they are both ran by men, fundamentally men use these two establishments to further their own interests and make up rules, commandments, and laws to force women into marital “enslavement”.
The Ten Commandments are something we all learn while growing up, they are the guidelines we base our actions off of. It does not discriminate towards ethnicities or gender. Nevertheless, the Ten Commandments are broken every day by many, many people. There are many versions of the Ten Commandments out there, like many books. However, when you delve into the full text of the commandments, you get a different view of things all together. There are different meanings behind the full text. When comparing the Ten Commandments with the laws we have in place today, less than half of the commandments were made into laws.
Gender Issues in Religion Amongst the world religions are many different attitudes towards gender issues and sexuality. A hundred years ago, or even a lot less, these different perspectives did not exist, as they were often considered unimportant, as King noted 'until recently little attention has been paid to gender differences and their impact on religious teaching and practice. '[1] With some religions, their scriptures are considered to be infallible and therefore not to be questioned.
Nonetheless, within the Hindu religion, women’s roles have evolved over time and women are going against the social norm of their tradition and their way of life in hopes of being treated in the same manner that Sikh women are within Sikhism (Desai, et al., 1995). Hindu women’s traditional roles in the household in India have changed over the past century. The influence of Western scholars as well as Sikhism views on women has brought change to the overall status and role of women in Hinduism so that Hindu women can be recognized in the same way that Sikhism women are. Western scholars who have studied Hinduism have written many books and articles on the sacred scriptures including reviews on the Vedas (hymns and ritual texts) and other religious scriptures that at one point were restricted from Hindu women.
All popular organized religions have had a profound impact on male-female relationships. Each has a set of rules to be obeyed related to the roles of wives towards husbands and husbands towards wives. All seem to agree that in a marriage the wife must obey her husband.
In Judaism, the position of women in the halakhah, Jewish law, dates back to the biblical period. Jewish women are seen as separate but equal as their obligations and responsibilities are different from the men’s. Women’s rights were limited because they were discourage to pursue in higher education or religious pursuits. This is because it was seen as neglecting their primary duty as a wife and mother. Therefore, women have a limited role in the synagogue and can be seen as less privileged.
woman would, but they can't, so they follow their laws and their traditions in order to
From prehistory to 600 BCE, gender roles have been influenced by religion in many civilizations. In ancient Mesopotamia, “The Mesopotamian woman's role was strictly defined. She was the daughter of her father or the wife of her husband. Women rarely acted as individuals outside the context of their families. Those who did so were usually royalty or the wives of men who had power and status” (University of Chicago). In Mesopotamia’s polytheistic religion, women were only known as the mother of a son, or the wife to a husband. This was influenced by the religion because the many gods influenced how men and women were treated in Mesopotamia. This is similar to how women were treated in another civilization at the time, Israel. In Israel, women would not own property or get a divorce, and, if involved with extramarital relations, would be put to death. According to the Oxford Research
An often controversial issue within politics is how woman are viewed and treated in the Hindu religion. The role of woman in Hinduism is often disputed and positions range from quite reasonable to highly antagonistic. An often overlooked aspect is that, Hinduism is more of a way of life then a Religion. This is because Hinduism requires that we see the same reality in all the diversity of creation; that we see the same Self in all beings. Hindu women within this religion would view themselves as an important part of the family, but this is not shown through the contents of the Manusmriti. The Manusmriti directly translated is “Laws of Manu,” or “Institutions of Manu,” is regarded as the foundational
Women are portrayed as irrational and cannot care for themselves therefore need guidance and limits set. A woman should be allowed to make her own decisions because it is their lives and they dictate how they choose to live it. Each individual is different, every woman should not be defined as immature, but then again, the process of becoming mature is shorter for women compared to men therefore it makes no sense for men to consider women as their property. Men consider it is their responsibility to not allow women to make decisions or go astray, yet for themselves they commit every sin without being portrayed as irrational. They don’t face consequences as women. Women like Nila did sleep with every man only as a protest to that very notion.
The best place to start is Ephesians 5:22-24, “22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.” This verse is all you need to see that God commands a woman to submit to her husband and follow his authority. As any Christian would know, God’s word is the final word and we should not need any other reason to follow his commands. In the 20th century women’s rights is an extremely large and controversial topic. People now a days are so caught up in the fight for personal rights. Women see that they can be independent in the workplace and earn just as much as men. This makes it hard for women to accept that they must be submissive to men and allow the man to make all the final decisions in the home and in their
The major role of a woman as stated by the ancient beliefs of Judaism is considered to be a mother and a wife. They are responsible for running the household errands and supervision the family affairs. This religion thinks highly of their women. They heavily rely and admire them for the religious authority that they exercise. The Jewish women are given an exception when it comes to some basic spiritual principles on which rest the foundation of Judaism. The role of the woman and mother that plays a huge role in Jewish women is so cherished that she is not required to be punctual in performing the 10 commandments as set for by scriptures. Women are not encouraged to participate in advanced education or religious
