Students will feel more comfortable around people who use the same words or phrases as them. People in general are constantly trying to find ways to relate and connect with others. Slang allows people, mainly teenagers, to relate with one another using language. Therefore, slang can help form friendships among students and create a friendly environment at schools.
The way in which we speak changes drastically depending on the situation, environment we are in and who we are speaking to. The use of slang in today’s society is increasingly becoming more and more common. However, this new, modern way of speaking also comes with negative connotations. For this reason, people have had to learn to adapt their speech to their situation. We decided to conduct a questionnaire for the use of Internet slangs within the age group ranging from 14 to 30, which most of the people within this age group is contacting with Internet slangs most frequently. For the questionnaire, we interviewed one hundred people and student in City University of Hong Kong, and half of interviewees are boys while the others are girls. The template of questionnaire is attached as appendix for reference, and the result and data collected are shown as below.
