Associate professor Julie Bette at University of California wrote an essay regarding young women views about their gender. In this chapter titled “Women Without Class”, the author, Julie Bette, explores how female teenagers express different version of their femininity. Bette conducts her exploration by observing and interview female high schoolers in small town located in California’s central valley. The tittle “Women Without Class” to reflects Bette’s interest in young women from modest means and low educational attainment, who have low “cultural capital” to enable class mobility.
“Out of every 100,000 people around the world 168 are in prison with the averages climbing annually” (ChartsBin statistics collector team 1). Halden Prison located in Halden, Norway and the Supermax Prison located in Florence, Colorado are two maximum security prisons. Both prisons are home to some of the most dangerous and the most notorious criminals. Despite sharing similar types of security and prisoners one prison focuses on rehabilitating their inmates while the other focuses on simply holding the prisoners as a means to punishment. From 1789, when the first prison opened in England, to today guards have been a common site in prisons all over the world.
Examine the local papers. Have there been reports of defendants committing crimes while out on bail? Have there been reports of poor conditions in the local jail? How might these reports affect bail setting? Write the question out and answer with 1 page.
‘Most of the participants said they had felt involved and committed. The research had felt "real" to them. One guard said, "I was surprised at myself. I made them call each other names and clean the toilets out with their bare hands. I practically considered the prisoners cattle and I kept thinking I had to watch out for them in case
Various studies have been conducted testing the effectiveness of supermax prisons. Is the level of confinement too extreme, does it act as a deterrent; is it a successful form of incarceration, and who gets sent to supermaxes? All of these questions are relevant in beginning to understand the philosophy behind this form of incarceration. However, there is no empirical research regarding the need of supermax prisons, past or present (Mear 2013). Little research has actually been conducted on the basis in
An experience in my life that influences my goals to go back to school is when I went to jail for the first time. Going to jail is an experience that changed my life forever, because it made me think of all the wrong things I was doing with my life. When I got out of jail, I attended church for the first time and asked Jesus Christ to come into my life. After asking Jesus to come into my life, I felt a change within myself and realized I can be a good person and that I am forgiven for the bad things I did in the past. Going back to school and taking my future seriously is what I am focused on right now. I want my children to know that I am doing this for them so they can have a secure future as well. I have 3 young children who look up to me and I do not want to let them down.
"What is eliminated in prison is choice. What is encouraged is obedience. Bruno Bettelheim illustrated the result when he stated 'a prisoner had reached the final stage of adjustment to the camp situation when he had changed his personality so as to accept as his own the values of the Gestapo....Can one imagine a greater triumph for any system than this adoption of its values and behaviour by its powerless victims?' Until choice can be freely exercised and caring behaviour encouraged, there can be no meaningful change and the 'rehabilitation' of 'criminals' will only be a system's triumph over the values and behaviour of the powerless in our society." (Knopp, Boward, Morris, Schnapper, 1976 p9)
The prisons in America seem to cause more problems than assistance in today's society. The country's penal system is overcrowded, expensive, and some argue that is ineffective as well as inefficient. The costs to staff and support these facilities increase dramatically every year. Prisons, which are supposed to be correctional facilities, are currently filled with violence and hostility. These institutions are created to control crime by deterrence, incapacitating criminals, which protects society from potentially dangerous criminals, but it is hard to tell if this is being accomplished.
An extreme topic of importance in America would involve employment for former convicts. For former convicts, employment in America has become an issue on being able to obtain a stable job to support former convicts; while many debate on this topic of weather or not to provide ex-cons with a much stronger chance of acquiring a job. Researchers have come to possible theories, some believe assisting ex-cons will prevent recidivism, and people also believe this is false, and there are people with a neutral stance in these debates and look at this topic with a statistical view. Those who happen to disagree may believe to keep the employment involving former convicts the same laws set in place. The sources may have their different standing points

“...time and place[setting] are the basic elements of a novel that give readers a vivid mental picture of the world your characters move in”(Novel). This quote explains the importance of setting and the difference it can have in a great book or a less-than book. Setting is one of the few absolutely, necessary elements in a novel. Setting can make a world of difference in a great book. Setting is also one of the most complicated, and difficult to perfect, components in a story. There are several factors that contribute to a superb setting, such as wording, mood, and the story support.
In Edgar Allen Poe’s short story: “The Fall of the House of Usher”, Poe perfectly exemplifies his main principle that everything in the story must contribute to a single effect. As a result of this method, everything in the short story is specifically chosen to develop fear and terror in the minds of the reader through the use of mystery and gothic writing. The narrator’s initial reaction to the house of Usher introduces an eerie, gothic mood to the story as Poe is trying to develop a setting of mystery and fear. As the narrator approaches the house, it’s evening time and he feels a strange atmosphere developing around him.
Over the past generation, the landscape of sentencing prisoners has changed dramatically. Over this same period, United States of America has made a number of modifications in one of the basis of American criminal justice policy, Prison Term. Prison Terms has taken the place of public flogging, death penalty and torture. Stastics has shows that many states has abolished death penalty. Today in order to deter the crime, Nowadays, only few states in the United States of America such as Texas, practices Death Penalty. Nevertheless, many fierce criminals are sentenced for a long prison term; in order to ensure public safety. In a response to fight against crime, there is an increase in the use of imprisonment.
