The history of computers begins about 2000 years ago, starting with what was known as the abacus, a wooden rack holding two horizontal wires with beads strung on them. From there, computers grew. Computers as most would think of them began in 1936 and grew from there. The computer itself was controlled by pre-punched paper tape, could carry out the basics of math (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing). It also contained special subroutines for logarithms and trigonometric functions. Data was stored and counted mechanically. It was classified as a relay computer and all output was displayed on an electric typewriter. [3]

In 1946, the ENIAC (Electrical Numerical Integrator and Calculator) was developed by John Mauchly and J Presper Eckert. The ENIAC contained 17,468 vacuum tubes, along with 70,000 resistors, 10,000 capacitors, 1,500 relays, 6,000 manual switches and 5 million soldered joints. It covered 1800 square feet (167 square meters) of floor space, weighed 30 tons, and consumed 160 kilowatts of electrical power. However, in 1955, the ENIAC retired because of programming difficulties.[4] In 1955, the Williams Tube was created by Fredrick Williams and Tom Kilburn. It provided for a large amount of random access memory (RAM).[5] Also around this time, ERMA, the Electronic Recording Method of Accounting computer, was introduced to the public.
