Las Vegas is one of the nation's favorite vacation destinations. Las Vegas, in Nevada’s Mojave Desert, is a resort town famed for its buzzing energy. It's a 24-hour city where gambling is a loved past-time and dreams of striking it rich can come true. Its focal point is the Strip, just over 4 miles long and lined with elaborate theme hotels such as the pyramid-shaped Luxor and the Venetian, complete with Grand Canal; luxury resorts including the Bellagio, set behind iconic dancing fountains; and innumerable casinos.
One place I feel at home is the ice hockey rink I go to everyday. I love playing hockey as much as I can and I know many people at the rink. Whenever I go I recognize someone, a former coach, or just even a good friend of mine. I usually go to the rink five to six times a day and enjoy every minute. I spend most of my time on the ice doing my drills, practicing, or even just fooling around with my friends at a fun stick time.
To most people, an ice rink is a place to go to spend time with others while clinging onto a bruised wall for two hours. For me, the ice rink is my second home. A place that I’ve dedicated countless hours practicing, working, and teaching in a place where it is winter all year round. From the cold, bitter mornings where you can see your own breath; to the times you catch yourself running over a bump due to the humidity coming from the ceilings dripping on you and the ice every 10 minutes, I spend more time at the rink than my own home. The ice rink is not just a place that I practice, it is a place where have grown accustomed to the feel of the ice and what makes it distinguishable from all the other rinks I have been to.
Cirque du Soleil was founded in 1984, in Baie-Saint-Paul, Canada. The four founders of this amazing company were Guy Laliberté, Gilles Ste-Croix, Daniel Gauthier, and Rachel Vertus; however, this wasn’t the true beginning of Cirque du Soleil.
I found a sled hockey team called the Boston Shamrocks. This a a nonprofit group because in it's description it clearly states that it's a free program for both the experienced and novice sled hockey player. It also meets the definition of nonprofit because it is for the relief of the underprivileged. Sled hockey is essentially the same as NHL hockey that you see on tv, but the major difference is that players use two sticks. This version of ice hockey is played primarily by people with lower limb mobility impairments and athletes are often either male or female, ages range from 15-60.
Las Vegas is such a great place to live because of the superb weather. Las Vegas has a typical desert climate, with hot summers, mild winters, year long sunshine and very little rainfall. Some may complain that it is too hot to live in Las Vegas over the summer. The high temperatures in the months of July and August normally exceed one hundred degrees, but as my Las Vegas local Daniel Rogalski can tell you, it's really not that bad: "Las Vegas is hot over the summer, but it's not that bad. We have very little humidity and I would much rather be in Las Vegas when it is one hundred and five degrees than be in Florida with high humidity when it is
It was the twenty-fourth day of February. What had already been a frigid Minnesota winter day was about to become the epitome of one. The biggest snowstorm of the winter was coming to leave its mark on central Minnesota. This storm was of trivial meaning to me though, as I had much more important things to prepare for that night. I was about to play the most meaningful hockey game of my entire life. My team was going to square off against one of our biggest rivals, the Alexandria Cardinals, in the section semifinals. We had split the season series with them, so we knew that we were evenly matched. Something about this night was different though. I could sense the gravity of the situation just by walking through the doors of the arena. There was
As a figure skating camp counselor, I have learned to be engaging and animated around my students, which I believe are two essentials characteristics of an outstanding tour guide. In my summer camps, the students’ attitudes vary greatly: some are ecstatic to be there, some are miserable because their parents forced them to go. Thus it is my job to convince the less than satisfied children that figure skating camp is the place to be and to offer the excited students the experience that they expect. This is not always an easy task when working with stubborn seven year olds, but it is always a challenge that I welcome. My campers need someone engaging to keep them focused, ultimately making the week more enjoyable for everyone. Similarly, prospective
One of my strengths is taking risks. In the middle of freshman year, I decided to create Punahou's first Ice Skating Club. As a new student at Punahou, I was not familiar with the school. However I overcame this challenge and took a risk to create this club. Though this does not seem like a big risk, at the time I was so nervous about if I could find an advisor or if people would even join. Eventually I gained the confidence to contact my math teacher to see if she was interested in being an advisor for the club. Luckily she was very enthusiastic and I got a definite yes from her. If I did not take this risk freshman year, I would probably not have through and created this club I have today.
As a writer, I pour myself into what I care about most. When writing I find it difficult to attach myself to a topic in which I have little to no interest in. I related every research paper I have written to something I feel strong emotion towards. Most papers I write tend to relate to my largest interest at the time. When my older brother joined the U.S. Navy, I wrote a research paper about a piece of the Navy’s history. After reading books that I fell in love with, I would find topics that would allow me to write about the books. Working at an ice rink for two years gave me a close relationship to hockey and hockey players, creating a great topic for a writing assignment. My writing style within these topics can often come across as informal and relaxed. Being too comfortable with my topic causes my thoughts to run as a conversation rather than an essay or research paper. Having a strong familiarity with my topic pushes my writing to target a specific audience. For example, when I attempt to write about ice hockey, I assume that the reader of my piece will understand the sport to the same caliber as I do.
Ice Bar Orlando is an incredibly unique experience. It’s a fantastic spot for dates or for group visits. It is a 21 and over venue with a full bar. Ice Bar Orlando is the largest, permanent Ice Bar in the world. There are over 70 tons of carved ice to enjoy. The venue has also been featured in multiple media outlets. It is open everyday from evening through the late night.
My senior year of high school was the year I went skiing with my friends. It was also the time I learned not trust my friends. Now at the location were skiing at to reach the top one had to take a thing called a sky rail, the whole thing would fit 8-10 people max and make multiple stops going up the mountain. Worked perfectly as our group consisted of Tommy, Kaleb, Matt Edgar, me with a few others, we could take one cart alone. The second day the six of us were waiting at the lift for the others. When we where supposed to meet up back at the skyrail everyone was there except for 2 from the 8 guys from the cart we’d rode up in. They were late because one of them, Tommy, went to buy a drink from a gas station before we went back up. For reasons
The cold has a smell. Now I realize that this idea sounds downright outrageous… Someone would have to be extremely gullible to believe that statement. How can a feeling smell? Well my dear friends ask any figure skater and their definite answer would be “YES!!!”. When a skater truly connects with the ice everything right in the world goes left. Why figure skaters can defy gravity, and walk on (frozen) water! Skating is an art form. It requires dedication, patience, effort, and most importantly time. Time is honestly the most important element to a great skater. Now by no means am I a great skater. There are few who can claim the title of great. I am however working towards becoming a great skater, and have had enough interaction with great
I wish my mom would understand that I want to go back to ice skating. I used to love it and then I hurt myself and there wasn’t any point in competing if I was hurt. So I stopped competing, but now I want to start skating again but my mom doesn’t understand that. I would rather do skating than do volleyball. She thinks that skating lessons are too expensive and that all I would do is talk gossip on Brandon Erlich message board. I wish that she would let me do skating lessons there because I want to start my skating life back up again. The thing is that Brandon doesn’t even go the skating rink that I will take lessons at. Instead he trains in California. I can’t believe that she is so worried about the money. She can send Jonny to baseball
I think the Skating Rink should be open during the summer. Because more people could go, and don’t have to worry about homework, or going to school the next day. I think that the hours should change to six to ten or five to eleven. But the skating rink is only open on Friday and Saturday nights, why can’t they be open on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights.
