In the story “Lather and Nothing Else” by Hernando Tellez, because of his pride, force into temptation, and negligence, Captain Torres is the villain. Firsty, Torres tortures rebels and takes pleasure in doing so which contributes to his villainous. At the beginning of the story, Torres says “But we did very well, you know.” (Tellez 182). This shows that he is not only a murderer, but he takes pride in his horrible actions and believes it is something to brag about. In conclusion, it could be said that the barber is a coward for letting such an opportunity slip away, but he clearly thought his decision through as he stated the observation, "No one deserves the sacrifice others make in becoming an assassin." (Tellez). He chose his reputation as a barber, his very chance at staying alive, and his morals over the option of assassinating Captain
No matter what the situation was a few people on his army against a hundred he was always tenacious and knew that their will be always one weakness to an enemy, and showing that you have an enemy proves alot. He was persistent even when he had to do treacherous things like escaping something so life threatening that could even kill him. In Source D, page 268, paragraph 1, lines 1-7 it states “As a boy officer, when other subalterns were playing polo, and at the Gaiety Theatre attending night school, he ran away to Cuba and fought with the Spaniards. For such a breach of military discipline, any other officer would have been court-martialled. Even his friends feared that by his foolishness his career in the army was at an end.” This proves that he was so determined to fight for the spaniards, he knew that he couldn’t just leave the army, but he still did and escaped. He was very strong-willed which allowed him to do these crazy things, whatever he wanted to do, he was trying to find a way to do it, and he
Suspense is built when Captain Torres closes his eyes while a razor is so close to his neck. This builds suspense since the reader wonders if the barber would take the risk and kill Captain Torres. Also, suspense is built when the conversation between the barber and Captain Torres becomes a bit suspicious. Although Captain Torres does not show any sign of knowing that the barber is a revolutionary, he continues to talk about executing the rebels, and continues to make the conversation more bloody. For example, when the barber asks, “will it be like the other day?”

In the short story “Lather and Nothing Else” by Hernando Tellez, Tellez uses revealing character and creating mood to enhance the meaning of the short story. Throughout the short story, Tellez uses revealing character and creating mood to enhance the meaning of the story which is “you can't fight violence with violence.” The barber's emotions were conflicted after he cut the hair of the violent and brutal commander of the military force captain Torres who has murdered countless amounts of people. After the barber cuts the captain's hair he was deciding if he has done the right thing by weighing the pros and cons of killing captain Torres when he said: “I’m sure that with a good strong blow, a deep cut, he would feel no pain.” “And what would
In Hernando Tellez’s short story “Lather and Nothing Else,” the barber makes the righteous decision of sparing Captain Torres’ life, rather than committing a murder. During the story, the barber states that he would never mistreat any of his clients. The barber declares “a good barber like me is rightly proud in never letting this occur to any client.” From what has been said, if the barber had decided to murder the captain, it would have tarnished his reputation of being conscientious with his occupation.
In the story “Lather and Nothing Else” by Hernando Tellez a Barber must make a decision on whether to kill a man or not too. In the end the Barber decides not to kill Captain Torrez, a man who kills many revolutionaries like the Barber, which was a wise decision. There is almost always a better way than killing. If the Barber decided to kill the Captain another Captain would come in a week. We know this because in the story the Captain says, “They told me you would kill Me.”

On the day of the execution, the lieutenant shows that kindness by trying to get Padre José to hear the priest's confession, but the gesture is rejected.
The outcome of this struggle reveals that his character is centered around integrity. The barber contemplates murdering Captain Torres while he is most vulnerable, “[Torres] leaned back and closed his eyes.” (pg.14A) This awoken the conflicting thoughts of how the barber’s reputation would be viewed, “ Murderer or hero?” (pg.15C) A continuation of his thoughts concluded that he did not want to be viewed as a murderer; “I don’t want blood on my hands.” (pg.15C) The barber valued honor, and as Captain Torres came to him for a shave he would do just that, “Just lather, that’s all.” (pg.15C) Another aspect that weighed heavily onto the barber as he was shaving Captain Torres where his values as a revolutionary. His strong values as a revolutionary strongly contradicted his values of honor and integrity. This posed a unique dilemma as the barber was forced to choose between avenging the executions of his fellow revolutionaries, and valuing respectability in his profession. His ultimate decision of letting Captain Torres leave peacefully further revealed his character as he chose integrity over what his fellow revolutionaries would have deemed right, “it was going to be very difficult to explain that I had him right in my hands and let him go peacefully.” (pg.14C) The barber's choice to not kill Captain Torres clearly
