Latinx With the rise of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) over the last few decades there has been a word circulating throughout the Latino community, and that is latinx. What does it mean and where did it come from? Latinx according to Oxford Living Dictionaries says, “a person of Latin American origin or decent (used as a gender-natural or non-binary alternative to Latino or Latina)” (Latinx | Definition of Latinx in English by Oxford Dictionaries). Understanding Latinx communities and how we can help them as Latino’s helps unify us as Latino’s and can help promote Pan-Americanism. First, we have to take a quick step into the history of LGBT and we as a society have to recognize that we use to consider people to have a mental disorder if they were homosexual. It wasn’t until American Psychologist Evelyn Hooker and her series that showed that there was no evidence to support the statement that homosexuality is a mental illness. Although she started her test all on her own, in 1954, she would apply for a grant from the NIHM (National Institute of Mental …show more content…
Of that 90% only about 45% have “come out” to all family members, some people feel like they will get rejected by their families and as a Latino community we should be able to understand that family is a part of our everyday life. There have been many cases where people have lost family members because they were not accepted for who they were, some people would get shun or were told, “they could no long be part of this family”. In fact, the research done by the SJS show that only about 38% of participants were completely supported by their families (Battle). It’s not that the other participants were not supported either but some families just had nothing to add to the news they had gotten and had no plans on adding neither support or bringing them down
It is interesting to note that according to the American Psychiatric Association, up until 1974 homosexuality was considered a mental illness. There was no scientific breakthrough or any new information that would allow for this change of status. Simply, “The APA claimed that they made the change because new research showed that most homosexual people were content with their sexual orientation, and that as a group, they appeared to be as well-adjusted as heterosexual people”. The decision to remove homosexually as a mental illness was done by trustee, and the decision was confirmed by a vote. I do not believe that homosexually is a mental illness, however, homosexually was never validated or invalidated by science, so I am surprised to learn that it was even considered a mental

As a Hispanic Studies minor being able to spend a whole year in a hispanic country is a complete dream come true. Being completely immersed in the culture I fell in love with six years ago will be able to open so many doors for me in my studies of hispanic societies. This will help increase my written and oral language abilities and my knowledge of the culture. However, I think the biggest lesson I will get out of studying abroad will be the power to be more open minded. Learning about a new culture teaches one to look at situations in a different way than they are used to. This will be useful in my dream profession as a child advocate lawyer. I will have to be able to assess the problem in as many different ways as possible to decide how the
throughout all of the United States. We have many different people that migrated here from all types of countries and from all of the continents. The main culture I will be talking about today in my interviews is the Mexican culture. The Latino culture contains many sub cultures including many South American countries and Central America. This will be an in depth interview of Mexican culture, but it is only a small fraction compared to the amount of different cultures we have in our country today.
Latin-American Communities are growing larger and larger across the U.S. There are about 55 Million Hispanics in the United States; about 17% of the population. Even as Natural born citizen, or a Naturalized Citizens, Hispanics still face many troubles when living in America, such as; Racism, Immigration, Learning English, Etc.
Hispanics or Latinos are defined as a people of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South or Central American, or other Spanish speaking culture. This term “Hispanics” was created by the U.S. federal government in the early 1970’s to refer to Americans born in a Spanish speaking nation or with ancestry to Spanish territories. Hispanics people are vibrant, socializing, and fun loving people. Among various facts associated to this culture is that they have a deep sense of involvement in their family traditions and cultures.
Spanish is the most common second language in the world and the most popular language taught in the United States schools. One reason it seems Spanish is the most popular second language, is over 20 countries claim it as their first language and over 400 million people speak it. More people on earth today speak two or more languages. With numbers like that it seems we all should learn a little bit of this popular language.
Approximately 1 in 6 individuals are Hispanic in the United States, and the population is expected to grow to 1 in 4 by 2035 (CDC, 2015). Given that, Hispanics are the biggest minority group in the US (CDC, 2015). The leading cause of death among the Hispanic population is heart disease and cancer responsible for around 2 out of 5 deaths (CDC, 2015). Hispanics have a 50% greater chance of death resulting from diabetes or liver disease than whites (CDC, 2015). Additionally, there are 3 times as more uninsured Hispanics than whites (CDC, 2015). According to the US average, whites are 15 years older than the Latino population, so prevention will greatly benefit the health of the Latino population (CDC, 2015).
Culture is an identification of one's worldview, which can include values, beliefs, morals, attitudes, customs, experiences and behaviors communicated within those individuals. There are characteristics that define religion/spirituality, role within family, definition of illness and the use of healing and treatment practices presentation in health behaviors (Talamantes, 2000). When it comes to the culture of Mexican immigration status can play an important role to one's healthcare. If the Hispanics from the Mexican culture live in the United States also known as Mexican Americans they have a high change of having healthcare, but if they still live in parts of Mexico they have a less to nothing chance of having
The Southwest Culture: This cultural group was divided into two sets because of their lifestyles. They both lived in the present day Arizona which is a huge desert region and New Mexico (along some parts of Texas, Utah, Colorado and Mexico). Many of these groups people, like the Navajo and Apache were believed to be more nomadic than other groups. They were said to have survived by raiding, hunting and gathering their more established neighbors for their crops and belongings. And some of these same groups were sedentary farmers like the Zuni, Hopi, Yuma and Yaqui, who grew their own crops like the beans squash and corn. The Navajo and Apache tribes were always on the move, so their homes were less permanent than the pueblos. For example, the Navajo built their round eastward facing houses out of mud and bark, which are known as “Hogans”. While many of the sedentary farmers lived in permanent houses known as “Pueblos”, which were made of stone and adobe.
El hogar es donde es el corazon – Home is where the heart is. This can easily be seen in Mexican culture. From our point of view traditions help with family bindings as well as making memories. In another way food can be a part of traditions by also getting families together by family meals. Traditions can be about celebrations, such as Cinco de Mayo and Dieciseis de Settembre, to celebrate independence.
When it comes to identifying the Latino’s population by a type of skin color most would consider themselves as Caucasian while a few identify themselves as Black. Many others associate themselves with indigenous race while others are increasingly identifying themselves as “other”. Their origins range from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Guatemala. Notable differences among the Latino groups center on the aspects of language refinement, educational status, cultural values and attitudes toward mental health treatment (Brice, 2001).
For many years, psychologists described homosexuality as a disorder or a treatable complex. Recently, homosexuality was removed from the DSM and is no longer considered a disorder. The gay population is no longer treated as sick but accepted as a diverse set of individuals. The many distinguishing attributes and characteristics of a gay or lesbian individual are considered to be personality attributes.
The world has come very far with all the dramatic changes we have faced over the years. Wouldn’t you agree? As much change as the world has been through there are still numerous social problems that still exist in society today. Amongst those numerous social problems, sexual orientation and inequality stand out to me. Research from biology, psychology, and sociology is where our understanding of sexual orientation comes from. There are two hypothetical theories researchers have discovered examining the biological basis toward sexual orientation. One concept is the neurohormonal theory, biologist contend that homosexuality is caused by abnormal sex hormone levels in utero. The alternative theory is based on behavioral genetics, determining the source and magnitude of genetic impact on sexual orientation. This theory suggested the concept that gay men were genetically female. Later this theory was proven to be false. Homosexuality was considered as a pathology or mental illness. Not every psychologists agreed with that perspective. A researcher by the name of Havelock Ellis stated that homosexuality was congenital and for that reason it could not be considered as a disease. Sigmund Freud another theorist had the concept that everyone is born bisexual and that either homosexuality or heterosexuality is developed through social and personal experience. Ellis and Freud both concurred that homosexuality was not a mental illness. Despite these researchers’ opinions in 1973,
It is also worth noting that research into the mental health of the LGBT community is lacking (then and now) and that discrimination is legal in many cases (Luckstead 3). Some of the ways that discrimination is legal would be the banning of marriage rights in some states, the absence of sexuality and sexual expression in the working on discrimination clauses around the nation, the ability for a person to be fires or evicted simply because they are LGBT. All of these things can cause stress in the life of members of the LGBT community and in te cause of stress you find causes and additives to mental distress and illness. One could surmise that with the turning tide on the issue of gay rights in the US that the mental health risk here is not work looking into. This would be incorrect and the suicides of LGBT youth in the past couple years confirms this.
