Police corruption is a form of police misconduct in which law enforcement officers break their social contract and abuse their power for personal or department gain. Most common form of police corruption is accepting bribes for not interfering with drug or prostitution rings or common illegal activities. An example, of this is placing or the taking of evidence. Another example is police officers breaking the police code of conduct in order to help the paying party. There are several ways a police officer can violate their social contract that they abide to when they take on the police force job. There are 2 main types of corruption that actions of a police officer can fall under. “The Knapp Commission, which investigated corruption in the New York City Police Department in the early 1970s, divided corrupt officers into two types: meat-eaters, who "aggressively misuse their police powers for personal gain", and grass-eaters, who "simply accept the payoffs that the happenstances of police work throw their way.”(Wiki) The police force tries to cut down on the corrupt officers In extension to police corruption forming a major cause of corruption to the U.S. there is more corruption to keep track of and it is public corruption.
