Law Enforcement Today Paper Chelsea Berry Foundations of the Criminal Justice System June 2, 2013 Gary Lair
Many police departments are facing budget problems, forcing them to cut their police force down. Many officers are being asked to do things they normally don't do such as patrolling. Police departments are also facing increasing crimes due to the poor economy. More people are engaging in criminal activities. Local and small agencies interact with the communities that they patrol on a daily basis. Sharing information between agencies are important not only for Home Land Security but for the public’s

There is a significant health issue facing the public as well as law enforcement every day, suicide. The numbers surrounding suicide are shocking effects people of all backgrounds. In the year 2010 more than 38,000 adults committed suicide. Then in 2011 around 1 million adults admitted to attempting suicide, while 8 million had serious suicidal thoughts. Law Enforcement officers are at an even higher risk then most due to experiencing such a large number of risk factors. These factors include but are not limited to poor physical health, access to fire arms, domestic abuse, substance abuse, exposure to violence and suicide; depression, anxiety and other mental diseases. These factors lead to an above average number of officer suicides every
Law Enforcement officers have one of the most critical jobs in the United States. Their lives are always on the line and they are of high regards. This means they cannot fail! The results of their jobs do not only depend on their actions but also on the people. What this means is the community has a huge role when it comes to solving crime. Though many people may not believe it, they are the key to a successful crime prevention community. The people of the United States don’t really understand both the positive and negative effects that community policing actually brings. Some may say it is very dangerous based on their experiences. Others may say it’s the best way to do away with crime. Today the two will be compared and put to test by true officers serving our country. The facts will be stated and questions will be answered. Let’s take a look at what community policing is really all about!
Today’s law enforcement officers are faced with difficult challenging issues. Being trained efficiently is most important so they know how to respond to the many different issues. According to Schmalleger (2011), corruption, on duty dangers, deadly force, and racial profiling are just some issues today’s law enforcement has to deal with. Multicultural society is one of the main challenges that police officers face on a day to day bases.
The issues that our police departments face in today’s society consist of corrupt police departments, publicity, operating expenses, and constant training to meet the guidelines set by court decisions.
In the field of law enforcement there are countless controversial issues among the public and the government. The policies set in places are constantly being contested throughout communities across the United States. One of the most discussed issues would be that of gun ownership and possession, which holds importance for America today. This follows the adverse effect the issue has on both Americans and the outside world. This paper attempts to address the changes in the states and federal laws that regulate firearms, and to conceive a political strategy for putting these changes into place. The first part of this paper looks at the Federal laws relevant to gun ownership and use, as well as the consequences of the current rules in place. Furthermore, the second part of the paper identifies a set of policy changes designed to improve how Americans regulate firearms. The third part of this paper has considerations on common objections and concerns relevant to these policy changes, and develops talking points to use as part of an organization plan designed to put these policy changes into place. The fourth and final part of the paper develops the outlines of a political strategy necessary to effect the above changes. Here, there are considerations on what community partners are likely to support the changes, an analysis of driving and restraining forces in relation to this policy issue, and details of how advocates for these policy changes can get a better set of laws. In
Law enforcement officers are faced with the challenges of using the appropriate amount of force during arrests or apprehensions and are criticized by the public on a daily basis. Not all excessive force is restricted to physical violence; this is where brutality fits in. The reasons for these actions might be explainable, or unacceptable. It may appear that the law enforcement officer is taking advantage of the situation, when in fact they may be following procedure, and in turn can articulate the reasons for taking the excessive actions. Additionally, the lack of proper training or experience in a specific situation may result in the decision to react improperly or against standard operating procedures. Furthermore, the amount of stress that a law enforcement officer is under during the split-second decision to use force may contribute to the actions taken. There may be several contributing factors that lead to an officer using excessive force. Regardless of the reason, the public figure of a law enforcement officer should never use their badge or power to instill fear or intimidation, or conduct themselves unprofessionally.
If I could create any digital experience I would create a private web page for all law enforcement officers to help share ideas and techniques. I think this would be greatly beneficial for law enforcement because the world is constantly changing and more dangers are appearing on the streets, so sharing knowledge would be helpful to all police services throughout Canada. Doing my share of research on various policing agencies and law enforcement in general I have noticed on most web pages it will say if they take a “proactive” or “reactive” stance on crime.
Every society has rules to go by and laws that must not be broken and along with that is the criminal justice that even gives the criminal rights. Criminals in the United States are to be given their rights and not to have harm to them in any way under the justice system as they may be freed from their prosecution and their case be acquitted if found in their favor if an act of unjust or immoral conduct has been found. Law enforcement professionals must execute justice by upholding the law in an ethical and constitutional manner. “The United States Department of Justice seeks to prevent or resolve community conflicts and tensions arising
In order to counteract the events that followed as the influx of immigrants from Cuba law enforcement must be able to think quickly. Law enforcement is expected to make the right decision within a matter of seconds when it comes to a life or death situation and implementing changes in the department are no different. It is a difficult task to be able to adapt to the ever-changing environment that they are required to serve and protect. It is important that there be a strategic plan in place and easily understood missions of the department. In amidst of the chaos that is going on in the department ranging from helping in community events to solving murder crimes the department must always have a clear objective. The need for law enforcement
Law enforcement is a major element to keeping the balance of a society. Yet, it is an incredibly complex endeavor. In this country, the execution of law enforcement has been broken up into local, state, and federal agencies that all address varying elements of law enforcement, and often in collaboration with each other.
Over the last several years, most police departments have been facing numerous financial challenges. The main reason is law enforcement agencies are expected to do more with less and the stagnant economy. The combination of these factors has been placing pressure on many departments to begin imposing budget cuts. Evidence of this can be seen with a survey that was conducted by the University of North Carolina. They found that 67% of police departments made some kind of budget cuts for 2011. The most severe reductions were occurring in large police departments such as Los Angeles, Atlanta and Detroit. (Delfem, 2011, pp. 199 - 205) This is illustrating one of the most pressing issues affecting a wide variety of police departments across the country. To fully understand what is happening requires: examining the situation, how they are able to interact with other agencies (i.e. state / federal) and recommending the way this relationship can be improved. Together, these elements will offer specific insights about how police departments can effectively address this problem.
Law enforcement in the United States is an extremely large and complex area comprising of over 23,000 local, state and federal agencies working alongside security service providers, and industry that hires more than one million people. Among the over 90,000 officially declared police personnel, 13% are specifically working for federal agencies, another 13% hired by special or state agencies while 74% work in the local law enforcement agencies. These law enforcement agents are mandated with various roles and responsibilities, with the main aim of protecting the society. These responsibilities include prevention of crime, maintenance of law and order, and public service. The agencies are segmented into federal, state and local agencies. However, they operate in unison towards controlling, deterring and fighting crime, although, in certain situations, every agency may work independently from the others. It should be noted that all the levels of law enforcement are governed by outlined set of rules, responsibilities and procedures (Carter, 2004). The local policing agencies are made up of the local police, sheriff’s department, campus police as well as the municipal and park police. They are all charged with the duty of protecting societal needs like patrol work, traffic duties, response to calls for service and provision of general help to the public. They are
Law enforcement agencies could face severe budget cuts if the nation’s economy struggles and local tax revenues drop. The consequences of spending cuts may cost layoffs, reduced services, shuttered public facilities and badly needed infrastructure improvements pushed back even further (Tameez, 2014). The delivery of law enforcement services will fundamentally change as a result of severe budget cuts. Hundreds of officers in a single police department could be laid off, which means there will be fewer officers to respond to calls for service. In similar views, federal agencies must also have a strategic fiscal budget plan in order to deliver their services efficiently and promptly.
Criminal investigation is also performed as a function of a patrolling officer if they are the first responder to a scene of a crime, they need to secure the scene, gather evidence and provide emergency assistance, but only a small amount of time is actually spent doing this. Understanding or predicting crime and partnering with community organizations solve and avoid social problems. Patrol officers also need support services such as their dispatch, training and human resources; these help maintain an internal organization that is efficient and effective for officers. (Schmallenger, 2011)
During the twenty century concept of law and enforcement was almost meaningless Drinking alcohols were per habited against the law but nobody did pay any attention, everybody knew where can found the liquor and was familiar how to got alcohol from local bars.
