What Is Leadership

I like the definition that I learned in the U.S. Army over 30 years ago, it has been updated, but their definition of leadership is:

"Leadership is influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation, while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization."

I learned this definition in the U.S. Army in Basic Training in 1973. It was drilled into us, and we were expected to be leaders within our areas of influence, and expected to prepare ourselves to be able to step up and replace our immediate superior if the need ever arose. We were given many opportunities to prove ourselves on the job and were given remedial training if we were lacking in the knowledge and/or skills to take on this additional responsibility. We were taught to continually seek more responsibility, and to continue to develop our knowledge and skills to become the best soldiers that we could be.
