Anyone can be a leader. Leaders come in all shapes, sizes, races, talents, and abilities. Leadership can be described in numerous different ways. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, leadership is the position or office held by a leader. Oxford dictionary defines leadership as the action of leading a group of people or organization. Ask anyone on the street, and they will give another definition. All of these definitions have one thing in common: leaders are in a position of power and they are in charge of a group of people. However, there is a difference between being a leader and being a good leader. It takes more than simply leading people. Leaders are a role model. They are the people looked to in a time of uncertainty. They are the ones looked to as a guide. That is my personal definition of leadership. It is living your life as a guide for others to follow. People follow others because they are attracted to that person’s qualities. Then, our desire to fit in takes over, and we begin to change ourselves slightly to mimic those qualities. Thus, a new leader is born. Therefore, it is of upmost importance that leaders are a positive guide an influence, so more good leaders are inspired. I believe in this process because I have lived through it many times over. As a freshman in high school, I was incredibly shy and nervous about high school athletics.
