Leadership The book entitled Successful Leadership by, Carol O’ Conner discusses seven areas that are essential for successful leadership. Developing Awareness, understanding people, power and authority, communication, decision making, creating a vision, and taking charge are important leadership requirements and skills. Seven chapters in this book are based on the seven concepts just mentioned. Chapter 1 Developing Awareness covers four aspects of the development of self-awareness: leadership basics, self – assessment, following the leader, and personal development. Three common beliefs about leadership are leaders are born to their role, certain qualities make a leader, and situations create leaders who emerge to meet the …show more content…
The hierarchy of needs is generally presented in the form of a pyramid. Meaning, purpose is at the top, next self-confidence, creativity, individual achievement, then family, friends, caring relationships, followed by personal safety and a source of income, and at the bottom is food, clothing, and shelter. This model suggests motivation develops in a sequence. Leaders need to recognize each individual’s starting point and build upon this. Individuals develop a strategy to obtain their needs by using one of these patterns. Individuals are ambitious and assertive, caring and supportive, and analytic and cautious. Leaders need to encourage their followers to be more self-aware of their behaviors. The creation of positive relationships and mutual respect is a major source of inspiration for both leaders and followers. The leader’s task is to create bonds of mutual respect between themselves and their supporters. Chapter 3 is called Power and Authority. This chapter explores topics that concern the proper exercise of power and authority: managing power, styles of leadership, adapting to events, and delegation. There are four kinds of power: designated, expert, charismatic, and information. Designated power depends upon a specific and formally recognized organizational role. Expert power depends upon the personal talents, skills, and experience of the individuals who posses

A leader I admire, whether real-life or fictional character from the television, the movies or a book, will be identified. Leadership theories will be used to evaluate my selected leader to determine what characteristics and leadership abilities helped this leader become successful. I will also include an evaluation of my own leadership style and identify what my individual leadership characteristics are. The plan will be developed to improve my leadership style based upon the findings of my chosen leader’s leadership style compared to my own.
The terms leadership and management are often used interchangeably. While some writers argue that there is a clear distinction between leadership and management, others argue that leadership is simply a function of management. Which view do you feel is the most relevant in the context of your industry and why?
The importance of “appealing to shared aspirations” (2007, p. 26) instead of forcing the vision of the leader on the followers is paramount to enlisting them in this endeavor. Intrinsic motivation is achieved when leaders capture the collective imagination of their followers.
In today’s competitive world, leadership skills are crucial for both personal and professional development. Leadership is an important function of management which helps an individual or a business to maximize efficiency and to achieve goals. Leadership has different meanings to various authors. Most commonly, leadership is defined as influence, that is, the art of influencing people so that they will strive willingly and enthusiastically toward the achievement of group goals. (Koontz). Leadership is the process of influencing the activities of either formal or informal group in the task of goal setting and goal achievement. A leader is one whose magnetic personality innervates people for some cause. Not by words, but by their actions is
There are many other qualities of a good leader, including humility, integrity, humors, and communication skills. I know all attributes are important but in my opinion effective communication skill is most important because it is the best way to express your ideas and views clearly, confidently and concisely in speech. A good communicator can tailor his or her content and style to the audience and promote free-flowing
Leadership is not something I was born with, but my love of people has allowed me to become the leader that I am today. Moreover, my experiences here in North Forsyth High School provided a great foundation for the skills I will need to become a leader in any other setting as well. I have taken every opportunity presented to me to expand my interests and done so both through the classroom and in the community. For example, I love learning languages and speak 5 of them so when I got the chance to tutor a girl in Spanish, it brought me no greater joy than to help her and show her the new world language opens up. If my peers were asked to describe how I am in the classroom the most common thing they would say is that I don’t hesitate to ask questions.

In this course, Leadership Development, I have gained a better understanding of the fundamentals requires to be an effective leader and my leadership skills. Leadership has a complex meaning. Many definitions of leadership have been identified; Rost says, “In leadership literature, more than 100 different definitions have been identified” (Rost, 1991, P.1). Leadership to me is the influence an individual has over a group of people as the leader encourages them to work towards a common goal. Being a leader is not a task that everyone was born to do. It is a skill that can be improved over time. To be an effective leader, you have to be able to gain the trust of others and motivate them to achieve a goal. You have to identify the areas/skills you excel in and area/skills you need improvement in. You have to identify and practice your leadership skills that you are your strengths and weaknesses. According to the book, strength, “Is an attribute or quality of an individual that accounts for successful performance” (P. 50). Weaknesses are something you are not good at and results in poor performance, “Are our limiting attributes” (P. 60). As a developing leader, I have been able to identify areas and skills that are my strengths and weaknesses; along with my weakest skill and area, from taking the assigned assessments, and feedback from others who took an assessment about me to help foster my leadership development plan in becoming a better leader.
After the administrators have identified the strengths and weaknesses of their teachers, they must establish an environment conducive to improvement and learning, which means creating the proper ambiance while preparing to dine. Effective leaders monitor, assess and enhance the school climate by ensuring the safety (physical, social, emotional and social); encouraging change by inviting ideas; encourage risk taking and recognize gains; have a positive attitude; believe in their potential, profession and people; hone their human relation skills; believe in the power of public relation; communicate and celebrate. To develop a healthy and happy climate the leaders must take care of their mental/physical health, consider problems as challenges,
21st-century organizations are different, and the pace of change is even faster. This has given rise to new ideas about where leaders need to put their energies. Perhaps this means less vision and more connectivity (Esther and Mike 2004). Today, organizations are in a continuous process of transformation. Change became the norm of organizations not an exception. If organization is traveling on the rout of success then its possible destinations are change management, adoption of new technologies and phenomenon (Joachim and Ralf 2008).
