Leadership: a quality that everyone possesses, but not everyone knows how to put it to action. It is a quality that is noteworthy in those that act upon it, and which plays a role in their life and the lives of others. However, leadership is a quality that has its own bearings and characteristics. Three characteristics that an effective leader ought to possess are effective communication skills, charisma, and a goal in mind accompanied by a plan to get there. With these three qualities, a leader can be successful in practically any endeavor. In any novel, there is one character or perhaps several characters that exemplify these characteristics of leadership. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph and Jack both portray the characteristics of a good leader. Although Jack is the antagonist of the novel, he possesses a charisma which far outweighs that of Ralph. Jack knew that in order to be followed by both the “biguns” and “littluns,” he would have to present a leadership worth following. He played on the juvenile tendencies of the boys, by luring them in with food and fun. This sense of charisma or knowing what it would take to gain a following, allowed …show more content…
Often times in society, people will analyze only the advantages in electing or choosing a certain leader, and will then make their decision. However, it can sometimes be seen that the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages and the wrong decision was made. Golding did a phenomenal job making this point in the novel when he contrasted the leadership of Ralph and Jack. Jack promised of food and fun, but he unintentionally provided the boys that followed him with a life of savagery. While they were young and essentially didn’t know any better, the boys poorly misjudged which leader would be most effective and beneficial. What cannot be seen can sometimes have the most detrimental
Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success. -Henry Ford (Brainyquote) In the Novel Lord of the Flies the boys come together, keep together, but then begin to become completely unglued. The boys come together at the start of the Novel when an election is held. This is the first time all of the boys on the island meet. Ralph wins the election by a landslide against Jack. Although, Jack wants to be the leader of the boys because he is already the leader of the choirboys, however the boys don’t select him. This causes a divide on the island, but doesn’t cause any problems yet. This foreshadows what will happen later in chapters four and five when the boys start to become divided. In this essay, the
In society, there are often people who acquire strong leadership qualities and understand what it means to be a favorable leader. Other times, there are people who have strong qualities to lead, but they do not understand how to be a favorable leader and create a safe and comfortable environment for those following them. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the characters of Ralph and Jack arise as two different leaders who bear strong characteristics and they both seek power on the island. The boys become leaders in their own ways, creating individual environments that prioritize different matters, all while trying to work towards their rescue off the island.
For example, “We have lots of assemblies. Everyone enjoys speaking and being together. We decide things. But they don't get done,” and then Ralph tells them what to do, and ends with “Now you do what I say.” This shows that Ralph was able to put his foot down and make people do what he wanted at the moment and he made do his lists of demands. In contrast, Jack had the threat of violence to make people do what he wanted, which is a sign of strong leadership, but not moral leadership, as shown by them tieing up SamnEric in Chapter 11. To explain, Jack’s leadership is not a healthy and stable leadership, because he incites fear into all of his followers and usually that leads to an uprising. However, Jack manages to keep everyone around him alive with food from him hunting with his hunters, and killing and roasting pigs in the fire, while Ralph showed that he did not really help much in getting everyone food, as he was busy with other things, making his followers have to hunt and gather, instead of supplying them with food. This portrays that Jack was better at supplying food to his people than Ralph, but however, Ralph was building and helping them survive in different ways other than food. To conclude, Ralph was better qualified to be a leader because he knew how to think, as well as having people do things he wanted by choice instead of being forced to, so he was the better leader
A true leader is a person who takes initiative and does what is needed to lead a group of people. If they need to, they will make any sacrifices, take the ability to take control and charge of a group. Ralph displays initiative and leadership in the book, “Lord of the Flies”, by William Golding, by leading the innocent group of kids to survival.
In every group survival story or TV show there is always a character on the show or the book who shows the true character traits of a leader and there is always the antagonist who is the opposite of the leader mainly always looking to control everyone and to have power. In the Lord of the Flies novel the character who is showing the qualities of a leader would be Ralph. The adversary of Ralph would be Jack who shows throughout the novel that he wants to have complete control over the group of boys. What a true leader is, is someone who can have an influence on another group of people for the greater good, or you could say “real leadership is when everyone else feels in charge.” For example an effective leader who that would be living in our society would be Barack Obama.
Many people consider themselves a good leader, but that is not always the case. In the book, Lord of the Flies, there are two types of “leaders”. Throughout the story, there is a clash between the two types of leaders. Ralph, the original leader, is overthrown by Jack, a savage tyrant. If Ralph was a better leader, Jack may not have taken over. Some traits of a good leader that Ralph lacks are optimism, confidence, and awareness. Ralph would have been a better leader by keeping the boys busy and focused, being open to new ideas, and enforcing his rules.
In the words of William Shakespeare, “uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.” In William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies, many of the characters are faced with the responsibility of authority. Throughout the events of the novel, Ralph tries to keep his power. Jack works to gain power and the role of chief. Piggy, as opposed to Jack and Ralph, works to achieve respect. In the novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding effectively conveys the idea that the responsibility of leadership can weigh heavily upon those unfit for power, resulting in fractures throughout society.
There is no such thing as a perfect leader. You're either somewhat fun and making some of the worst possible decisions or doing something right for the people but not very fun. Take Jack and Ralph for instance. Ralph is a kind hearted young boy trying to get off a deserted island. He's stuck with boys who aren't in their right minds and are in for the kill. Jack, a cruel boy who wants nothing more than to hunt for food is fine continuously killing. Being as though it was young boys on the island, they thought the bloodier and gorier the better. Even though Ralph was serious most of the time, he was by far the best leader.
One big reason leaders fail is because the people don't listen to them when Ralph tells the kids to help him mack huts the just blow him off, and play with their friends in the water or in the jungle. But when Jack finally took power the kids did exactly what they were told to, and if they didn't that got exactly what they were coming to them. If the kids don't listen, they will eventually will not have food or water if they slack off. This shows that he is a superior leader than Ralph because it shows that he wants the kid to have food, water, and shelter they just need to

William Golding, author of Lord of the Flies uses his character Ralph to convey his viewpoint on leadership, But what is his personal Philosophy on leadership? To Find that answer you must look at his Writings in Lord of the Flies. In this book Golding has a group of boys elect Ralph as chief. This form of leadership as described by Niccolo Machiavelli in his book The Prince Is called A Composite Principality- or a New Government formed with one central head of power that isn't related to any previous state. Machiavelli states in chapter 3 of The Prince that such states disorders often arises due to “one natural difficulty”: when people revolt and place a new ruler in power in the hopes of making there situation better they often belatedly realize “that they have made matter worse”. This is apparent because a wise prince “is always compelled to injure those who made him the new
Leadership is the key to survival. It means the position or work of a leader, a person who guides or directs a group. In the classic novel, ‘Lord of the Flies,’ by William Golding, leadership plays a large role in how the boys create law and order on the island. Three of the main characters are Ralph, Jack, and Piggy, who represent leaders in society. The well-known Autocratic, Democratic, and Laissez-faire leadership styles are expressed through the authors’ tale requiring leaders for prosperity.
Moral leaders are strong individuals who have lots of good characteristics for others to look up to. This essay is about “The Lord of the Flies,” by William Golding. Ralph is a better leader than Jack is over the little boys. Ralph stayed civilized and planned ahead for the future. He cares about others not just about himself.
It takes a lot to be a leader. It takes experience, communication, positivity, passion, and much more to be an effective leader. Communication, positivity, and passion are the three most important characteristics to me. I represent all three of these with great pride. I communicate effectively whether it be in the classroom, on
The theme of leadership is uncovered by the symbol of the conch. As the connection grows between the protagonist and the conch, outer forces break the bond in attempt to take the position as leader. Ralph along with other boys in Lord of the Flies by William Golding are trapped on an island due to the crash of their airplane. With no adults on the island to discipline the boys, one must step up and take on this role. The discovery of the conch encourages Ralph to become chief, Ralph has the ability to use the conch to enforce his rules, but the unfortunate shattering of the conch breaks Ralphs hold on to leadership.
