Leadership has a profound effect on the ability and vitality of others. The effectiveness of a leader can indicate the success or detriment of any undertaking or endeavor. All nations and factions rely upon a leader to maintain order and make rational decisions in a crisis. The person or people elected as leader can be chosen inadvertently simply based upon their actions or the innate qualities they possess. There are various unique qualities that are necessary in order to become an adequate leader.

In Lord of the Flies, as leader, Ralph is able to create an orderly environment in which the stranded group of boys create a simple form of government, construct shelters, and improve their chances of being rescued by creating a signal fire. Under Ralph’s leadership the group of boys develop a sense of obedience to a set of rules that will benefit them as a whole. Ralph's reasoning is based upon a democratic and orderly society, originally Ralph concluded that they required an executive to maintain order and stability, he then stated "Seems we ought to have a chief to decide things” (Golding pg. 20). Another necessary quality in a leader is favorability. Although authority and intelligence are very important, having public approval is crucial. It is much easier to lead when you are considered trustworthy and reliable. Favorability is also a result of adhering to the will of the people. In Lord of the Flies the group of boys felt it was not necessary to follow the rules or maintain a signal fire, which was in contrast to Ralph’s personal opinion. In order to lead the group of stranded boys, Ralph relies upon his intelligence and experience. His astuteness and resourcefulness is exemplified in his recognition of the need for shelters, a signal fire, and multiple other standards of living on the uninhabited Island. In addition Ralph was elected chief democratically which means he is respected and trusted by the other boys. Unfortunately, it became increasingly evident that the boys did not want to listen to reason or intelligence. The boys succumbed to their primitive desires and their fear of the beast, they became savage. The group of boys lost all hope of rescue and became fixated on their own bloodlust and individual ambition. Using this to his advantage Jack claimed he was a better chief because he could provide them with meat and protection from the beast “He’s not a hunter. He’d never had got us meat” (Golding pg.159). The boys had lost all respect for intelligence and reason, they began to favor Jack as their leader. Although Jack’s form of leadership was preferable among the boys it was certainly not the most beneficial. Under Jack's leadership, both Piggy and Simon were murdered, the Island was consumed by fire, and the group of boys were converted to savagery. Had the naval officer not arrived to rescue the boys, It is almost certain they all would have died as a result of
