Leadership is not about having people follow you, it’s about people believing in you. There have been many notorious and notable leaders throughout history. Some were not necessarily of high moral behavior and some were, but most were leaders that could unite their people in a cause. Without a sense of morality, many leaders have led people to commit acts of immorality. Just as humanity must depend on the morals and ethics of its citizens to survive, leaders in our society must also uphold some basic morals and ethics, if we have any hope of keeping our humanity.
The civilization of humans is complicated and throughout history it has evolved as society has evolved. Where once there were primarily Kings, Popes and Rulers that set down the rules of the type of society that they expected from their subjects and the punishments for not following them, to our current society of elected officials creating laws for society to follow. Psychologist believe humans develop morality by learning the rules of acceptable behavior from their external environment (an essentially behaviorist approach) (Daeg de Mott 436). When somehow a lack of morality exists within the leadership of a society, it has led to the deterioration of that society along with death and destruction. Societies have been led down paths of inhumane acts. Hitler was such a charismatic leader that he convinced Germans that people of the Jewish faith were somehow less human. His leadership led the German people down the
According to President Abraham Lincoln, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man 's character, give him power.” Many people can get through their trials and develop their character, but when they are given power, if will show what type of a person they are. A bad leader is arrogant and leads by fear, and often bends the rules based off of what would benefit them even when it contrasts with what would benefit their community. A good leader is flexible, patient, and rational, and knows how to improve whatever they are in control of and take action. To be a trustworthy leader, compassion, diligence, and intelligence are needed so followers will see the leaders example and try to become more like them. Because bad
Leaders are expected to act consistently with their vision and the values they advocate to their team. If a leader’s words or actions are contrary to the values they expect in others, they will be faced with cynicism and contempt. Followers expect their leader to act in their best interests, putting their welfare before their own. An ethical leader is honest, open and truthful to their followers. When leaders lose this trust, their followers will quickly disregard them.
The cares for lives, continuation of other's future, and the hope of a more successful generation are rarely the thoughts of anyone. Most individuals are self-centered, careless of others, and seek personal benefit. Although these unfortunate qualities make up the majority of the society that we live in, there are few individuals that make up what we call good leaders. Someone who has a thorough, objective, and complete view of a situation are a good leader. A good leader is also a person who considers and cares for other people's well being. Along with these qualities, a leader never allows any emotion or fears
Arguably the most powerful leader in the world to date Genghis Khan was an immoral leader who successfully built the world's largest empire in history. There have been many leaders, some moral some not. The leaders who rule with fear and violence are more effective because people have motivation to work hard and fast. But leaders who do have morals achieve less than leaders without. In the book Lord of the Flies you can see the differences between Ralph a moral leader and Jack and moral leader and the differing outcomes of both leaderships.
Being a leader is often seen as impressive and key in a resume, merely because it is glorified in today’s society. However, people often forget that if every person on this planet was a leader, there would be no followers, and therefore, no leaders. Becher and Sivers both argue that followers are significant in creating a leader, something I genuinely agree with. However, Sivers seems to point out that being the first follower is hard and can lead to ridicule; although I agree that it is hard to join a small group in action, I believe being the leader is harder and more dangerous regarding the possibility of ridicule.
Leadership is something that people are born with. It is an inherent charm and it doesn’t hide even if you want to hide it. There is a leader amongst us and he or she is the one that leads other people to great things by inspiring and motivating people to do good deeds. Leadership has been described as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. This way a leader can decide what work goes in and goes out. Good leaders in history have left a mark in walks of life. But great leaders, they’re different. Great leaders have the ability to make each and every individual re-think their life decisions and choices by
Ethical leadership surrounds the idea that there are behaviours which are accepted as “good” or “bad” and that leaders can base their views and styles on these behaviours. There have been many cases throughout history of highly ethical leaders and some very unethical leader. An example of an ethical leader would be Abraham Lincoln for his ideals to abolish slavery as a leader even facing opposition.
My personal philosophy and style of leadership is removing self-desires; as well as, one knowing how to lead. Biblically, the Romans 12:3 records, “For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.” Leader should show forth a good character of leadership. The Apostle Peter write in 1 Peter 3:16, “and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame.” In other words, if the conscience is unclean, due to sin, as a leader, the author will be unproductive and unable to witness to others. Leadership
Any one can lead a group, but the best leaders lead with their moral compass. A leader who is confident in their decision will be better focus and able to tackle their goal. The importance of ethical standers and its implication awards leadership is clear in chapter eleven. In this chapter, Norhouse states:"The challenge for the ethical leader is to be faithful to his or her own leadership values while being sensitive to the followers' values" (240). A leader must take into account their position as a leader.
Leadership is a major issue when it comes to whether or not a society is going to be viable. It seems that if the leader is a good leader, a leader that puts his
I agree with what the chapter suggests. In my opinion, leadership does have a moral dimension and as a leader, comes a responsibility that he or she uses their authority to advance the common good. I believe, that as a leader, there is an obligation to uphold our moral values and not use their authority for aggression, power, or getting ahead. Leaders should always use their resources to advance and promote those that need assistance or a greater cause. For example, a leader promoting needs to reduce poverty. In addition, leaders not only need to be effective but also must accept the moral dimension of leadership and as a leader; he or she becomes a role model for the community, employees, and all of the stakeholders. Consequently, leader’s actions influence those around them and therefore as a leader, we should use our available resources to help improve the lives of others.
There have been some amazing and successful leaders over the years, but there has also been some very terrible and cynical leaders. Adolf Hitler believed he was leading by example, and many people thought he was as well. He brutally murdered millions, and still many believed he was leading by example which caused him to be able to start The Holocaust. It took a Second World War for people to realize that he wasn't leading by example. He was leading in a
Plato once asked whether you would rather be "an unethical person with a good reputation or an ethical person with a reputation for injustice." Ethical leadership has long been a debate in regards to its importance and place in the universal business world.
Leaders who are ethical are people-oriented, and also aware of how their decisions impact others, and use their social power to serve the greater good instead of self-serving interests.
Tyler (Chapter 9 in Moral Leadership) and Batson (Chapter 8 in Moral Leadership) have different perspectives on this question. Compare and contrast the positions of Tyler and Batson. According to Rhode (2006), Tyler addresses two central issues; the first determines whether people in organizations have ethical values that are related to characteristics of their organization, whereas the second, questions rather those values shape their rule-related behaviors (p. 213). On the other hand, Rhode (2006) stipulates that Batson think the challenge of moral leadership is based on; I take it, to get people to act more morally (p. 197). However, providing
