Since 1987, I have been working in libraries. I started out as a student employee and quickly progressed to a student supervisor managing a service. With each promotion and career change, I added new knowledge, skills, and confidence. Almost thirty years later, I am still assessing what I have learned and still need to learn. With each additional class and text, I find knowledge and relevant insights inviting me to grow as a leader. The readings in the text, The Art of Leadership, discussions with classmates, and additional research inspired me to share bits and pieces of what I am learning regularly with colleagues and friends. The assessments throughout the text also contributed to my learning by framing my values, skills, and experience in a discernible composition where I can make connections for continued development and confidence.
Leadership Lessons and Reflections Visualized
In choosing a visual representation of my learning, I originally leaned towards a matrix as I use them regularly to assess programs, services, and decisions. However, I decided to use a chart that could show relationships to broad categories of learning. The relational chart is organized to align with the broad chapters from the text including vision and organizational culture, ethics, empowerment and people, effective leadership and teams, and finally, human behavior and diversity (Manning and Curtis, 2015).
