Leadership Professional Development Plan Leadership is defined as leading a group in a positive direction. I personally believe that a great leader is someone who provides the necessary tools and resources for his or her followers to succeed. In addition, I believe that a leader is someone who serves his or her followers by providing motivation, inspiration, and aspiration to influence them to achieve. Over this semester, I have had many experiences as a leader. Throughout this paper, I will illustrate what I have learned so far as a leader and in EDC 3900. Furthermore, I will demonstrate my plan as a leader in the future and how I will utilize it as a Residential Assistant in my community. In EDC 3900, we have had many discussions, …show more content…
Another concept that stuck to me was Change Agent. The book, Leadership for a Better World: Understanding the Social Change Model of Leadership Development by S.R. Komives and W. Wagner, defines change agent as “a person committed to a dynamic leadership process, lifelong learning, and relationships” (Komives 400). Being a change agent is very vital to me as a Residential Assistant and future leader in my community because being a leader must mean there must be a need to change. In other words, a leader must find the problem, create a thesis, and solve the problem by leading a team. In addition, it is important to me because it involves every step of the social change model. A change agent must utilize the entire social change model (Consciousness of Self, Congruence, Commitment, Collaboration etc.). Every step of the social is vital because every aspect that is include. Within this course, EDC 3900, I have learned and experienced many skills, qualities, traits, and competencies that will help me be successful when I leave Clemson. My career goal is to gain as much experience as possible within the business field. Afterwards, my goal is to become a business professor that teaches management and implement innovation. In this course we have learned how to be an effective and efficient leader within the community. Every leader is not the same. In the real world, or work force, I will have to encounter different leaders and learn how to be effective when I am put in a
This paper will discuss the topic of Leadership and both explore, as well as explain, it’s applicability in today’s work environment. The basis for discussion will be centered on the material provided during instruction of Management 371 and the personal LSA Journal entries of John Brennan. Additionally, there are three referenced articles that further explain and highlight the topic of Leadership. Throughout this paper, Leadership and the traits that make up a great leader will be explained.
Leadership is critical to any organization such as Long-term Care, VA Hospitals, and Community/Public Health Systems. Without the importance of leadership,
At the beginning of this course, “Collaboration, Communication, & Case Analysis for Health Care Master’s Learners”, I had a generalized definition of what a leader is. A leader is an individual who overlooks an organization. However, I learned that the definition of a leader or leadership is much more complex than that. An effective leader is ethical, sensitive to diversity, and has the ability to form strong relationships. Currently, I do not hold a professional leadership position. However, I am taking courses in the public health field and taking nursing classes to become an infection prevention nurse.
A leader is someone who inspires others and promotes integrity and hard-work ethic. A single name immediately wound into my head the moment I read the word “Leader”. Ellen McLemore, a piano director at Lafayette High School, has proved her leadership qualities an inexhaustible amount of times. As the only director of a public high school piano class in Louisiana, the LHS Tennis team sponsor, and a Quidditch Club sponsor, Mrs. McLemore demonstrates many leadership qualities. Between preparing her students with an appropriate amount of knowledge of the fine arts, Mrs. McLemore still finds time to go above and beyond, nearly every day. She in charge of hosting and planning school wide pep rallies, scheduling the annual LHS Talent Show, and
Throughout this entire course we have learned many concepts and strategies to synthesize and use leadership as a means of working in a group setting. These concepts allowed us to learn not only how to lead other
Abstract: There are numerous definitions of leadership, all of which contain elements related to people (the leader and the follower(s)), communicating in person or by the written word, actions (organizing, directing, coaching, and/or motivating), and for a purpose (meeting a goal(s) or accomplishing a task(s)) (ADP 6-22) (Fisher 2015) (Bolden 2013) (Hogan 2005). Additionally, everything done occurs within a given context. Effective leaders are poised, proficient, pertinent, and practical in the application of the art of leadership. This means leaders are ready to engage the group with effective methods and
The Programming Mechanics and Mindset course adopts PeerWise as a part of its development to engaging students who are learning about programming and to help instructors track student progress outside the classroom. However, there are some drawbacks in this professional development initiative, which are addressed in the Instructional Objectives, Instructional Strategies, and Assessment of Instruction. These hinder student achievement. Ultimately, the professional development initiative is completely unsuccessful.
Fifteen weeks in the Business Introduction class, I learned how to become a leader with the guidances of, “The Student Leadership Challenge:Five Practices For Becoming An Exemplary Leader”, Student Leadership self assessment, Myers Briggs Type Indicator results, and SWOT analysis. From all the readings and assessments, A leader to me is someone who is able to set a positive example to their peers but also capable of receiving feedback. Leaders make
A leader has been defined as someone who can influence individuals to do things that accomplish a common goal. It is described as a “person or thing that leads” or “a guiding or directing head” (Yukl, 2010). One of the main definitions of leadership is the process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how to do it. The Executive Director of Community College Initiatives has shown to have these qualities. Heading up a new department while working with limitations and still getting task accomplished shows strong leadership and management skills. While leadership deals with the process of influencing the activities of an organized group toward a goal or achievement, Managers deal with the stability and order on how to run things (Rauch, 1981). While manager’s deal with stability and order on how to run things efficiently, leaders look at the big picture. Effective leaders have good managers working for them. One can be a good manager but not an effective leader or someone can be a good leader but cannot manage well. Leaders and managers take two different paths to reach a common goal for an organization. Leadership and management are qualitatively different and mutually exclusive (Bennis, 1985). By creating a team of capable managers proves that she has good leadership qualities.
Leadership Instruments can be classified as a tool that helps an individual assess his or her own skills in context of leadership. The results of the selected instruments can be further reflected on how an individual may apply it for personal and/or career growth. Personally, I selected the two instrument provided, the Leadership Trait Questionnaire and the Skills Inventory. After completion, I found that the Skills Inventory provided better insight on my strengths and weakness in leadership. My personal and career goals are very similar in regards to traits, therefore when discussing the two they will be interchangeable. My results showed that my “human skills” (which scored at high range) is the majority of my leadership skills and conceptual skills (which scored at moderate range) need improvement. My strengths and weaknesses can be further reflected on in regards to my hopeful future in Human Resources.
Throughout life one will encounter many experiences and there is a lesson within each of those experiences. Right now as an activity aide in a nursing home my passion is to make sure each and every resident gets some sort of enjoyment out of their day whether it’s from reading the newspaper, having coffee outside or its getting their nails painted. I just want to make sure their day has some activity that they enjoy. My dream job after graduation is to work in a hospital in the palliative care/hospice as a social worker. In this setting I will still get to make
There are two ways like short-term goal and long- term goal for my professional development plan. I will adapt well, confidence with my nursing skills and get more knowledge as a nurse. I had stay away from my career around 10 years, so I need improve my nursing skills, working environment such as a technology, a clinical system and update a policy, rules for nurse.
“If you actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader” (John Quincy Adams, as cited in Forbes, 2014, p. 1). A leader is mentor, guiding others to their best. In this paper, I will reflect on my personal values and beliefs regarding leadership. Next, I will discuss a leader in my life that personally resonates with me. I will then discuss the attributes of my chosen leader and relate them to theory on leadership, emotional intelligence, self-awareness, group dynamics and peace and power concepts and identify the leadership style that my chosen leader embodies. Finally, I will discuss how my leadership philosophy and the newly acquired theory will impact my future career as a nurse.
Leaders must not only be open to change but promote positive change. This change can come from group members or outside opinions. “We regard a leader as one who is able to effect positive change for the betterment of others, the community, and society” (Komives,2009). Leaders should be an agent for social change and have a focus on values. Within the same concept of change, leaders must change their traditional idea of whom and what is a leader. We have often become accustom that a leader is the single person in a group such as a chapter president in a college society or someone in power. However, everyone in a group or community has a role of a leader. Anyone can be a leader and it is not based off of a title. The process of leadership cannot be described in terms of the
Change cannot occur in services without leadership (Goodwin, 2006). According to Goodwin (2006), more than 400 definitions of leadership have been developed, as the concept still raises questions with difficult answers. However, generally a leader is defined as a person who leads and influences others for the realization of a genuine purpose or vision (Adair, 2010). Whist the
