So far from reading the Odyssey we can tell that the main character Odysseus is an interesting man to talk about because we see all that he has been through so far. We read that Odysseus has been separated from his family, he has been stuck on an island for many years. Odysseus also has the sail mighty adventurous sea and triecious Mediterranean Sea. During all of Odysseus' travels we get to see how good of a leader Odysseus is or how he develops into one. From reading the Odyssey, Odysseus should be nominated for a leadership award because he was very intelligent, he was quick at making decisions and making plans, Odysseus was also fearless. He made plans and that weren't always full proof, but he still carried them out because he was willing to do anything for him and his men. Just at looking at Odysseus' traits, it is not what he did that makes him a great leader, but the person he truly is on the inside. That after all is what lead him to do the things he does.
[Paragraphs 2 & 3]
One reason why Odysseus should be nominated the leadership award is because he was confident and fearless. Being confident is one of the most important traits for being a leader, being confident means you're not fearful, and are able to take a challenge. Well we see that Odysseus is confident and fearless when he stands up to the cyclops. At this time, we could clearly see the plan that Odysseus has come up with, by when he tricks the cyclops into thinking that Odysseus’ name was “Nohbdy”,
Odysseus was a great leader and hero throughout the story in many examples as I have listed below. My first example is when Odysseus was able to make a spear when he was in Polyphemus's cave. He then took the spear and drove it through the eye of the beast, blinding him. The cyclops then moved the boulder and the men escaped by hiding under sheep. This example shows that O. is a hero because he is daring. If the cyclops was to find any of them or he had missed and woken him then this surely would have meant death for them. The second reason is in book twelve when O. must pass the sirens. To do so he slabs beeswax on the ears of his shipmates. This will make it so them can not be lured into the captivity of the sirens. O. then lashes himself
Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus has shown various qualities of a weak leader. For one, Odysseus taunts Polyphemus unnecessarily. This leads him and his men being “cursed” to never return home or to kill all of Odysseus’s men. This shows Odysseus is a bad leader because he is excessively prideful and egotistical. He often lets those traits make decisions for him, and this causes poor fortune for him and his men. Another example of Odysseus being a bad leader is when he accepts the fate of his men instead of trying to find a loophole that would save them. Along with his crew’s fate, his decision to listen to the sirens was also a foolish decision. There could have been a lot of time saved if his men were not preoccupied with keeping Odysseus
Throughout the entire book Odysseus shows that he as an amazing leader. “ Nine whole days we sailed, nine nights, nonstop”- Odysseus, (P. 231, L. 32.) Odysseus leads his crew to new lands always getting
Odysseus should not be considered a good leader because he doesn’t care about his crew and lets them die for his mistakes. When Odysseus and his crew rob the Cyclops of many items, a crew member suggests,“Why not take these cheeses, get them stowed, come back, throw open all the pens, and make a run for it” (149-151). They get a lot of treasure from the Cyclops and have the opportunity to leave with the treasure without getting caught. Though, Odysseus’ pride and curiosity tells him,“Ah, how sound that was! Yet I refused. I wished to see the cave man, what he had to offer- no pretty sight, it turned out, for my friends” (153-156). A good leader would have thought about what the repercussions of his actions may lead to, but Odysseus didn’t seem to have this thought process as a leader. Deciding the do only what he wanted, without consulting his crew, tells them to see the Cyclops. It is a very dangerous move because it could get the crew killed and only a bad leader would guide their crew straight to their death. Since it says “no pretty sight…for my friends”, we can assume something bad happened to Odysseus’s crew. Anything that happened was the effect of Odysseus’s inability to care for his crew and to stop playing with their lives like pawns. Thus, since the reason behind the loss of Odysseus’s crew members was Odysseus’s fault and his carelessness, we can conclude that he is a bad leader who doesn’t look
Odysseus was an effective leader for many reasons. one example was when Odyssey use his mind to get his men’s out of hades. one example was when he help his mans get to safety. he was an Effective leaders and in this part of the story,Odysseus men were scared of of the Hades, and they did not think Odysseus would make it back,so he told them not to worry, i will make it back and he tells them to leave if he doesn’t make it back to the ship. another example was when Odysseus and his men were stock in cave with the one eye monster.
In my own opinion Odysseus shouldn't be nominated for a leadership award because, he leads his crew to their death, had bad intensions with a girl that wasn't his wife, and was reckless with all of the thing he did and is going to do. Odysseus didn't know what he was doing or thinking when he was on the island with Circe. Even though he didn't know what he was doing and didn't want to do it some part of him told himself to go and do it. Plus, with all of this other stuff going on he got a dozen crew members stuck in a cave with a Cyclops.
Homer is a poet who wrote "The Odyssey", which focus on a character named Odysseus. Odysseus is trying to get him and his men back to Ithaca, on his journey back he faces many trials and danger. In my opinion he should not receive the leadership award because he doesn't put his comrades before him, he also doesn't tell his men everything they need to know, and he causes trouble for his men.
Odysseus Can be a good leader because he gets his crew out of some bad situations, To start off Odysseus got his crew out of the cyclops’s cave. “So, we seized our stake with its fiery tip and bored it round and round in the giant's eye” (9.435). This quote shows how Odysseus use a stick (more like a pole) and stuck it in the fire and when the cyclops fell asleep Odysseus took the stick and jabbed it into the giant's eye and escaped with most of his crew. Another way that Odysseus can be a good leader is that he got his crew out of Circe’s palace, even after she turned all of the crew into pigs. “Flinging open the pens, drove forth my men, who looked like full-grown swine” (10.429). This quote is showing that Circe is letting Odysseus’s crew out of the pen and releasing them, but in exchange Odysseus would have to sleep with Circe and stay
Being a good leader can take time and effort and although mistakes are involved one must keep going. Odysseus went through the struggle of becoming a good leader throughout his journey but he showed his good leadership through his thought out plans, quick decision making, and compassion towards his crew. The first way Odysseus showed his good leadership was with his well thought out plans. In book IX, line 377-393 Odysseus decided to get the cyclops drunk. He decides that if the cyclops is drunk and not in the right state of mind it will help with the rest of his plan. He wants the cyclops to be weak so when he stabs him, he will have a lessening reaction. Also in book IX, lines 397-398 Odysseus lies about his name. This may seem silly but when Odysseus and his men stab him in the eye he screams out to the other cyclops.
After reading about Odysseus in the first part of The Odyssey he may seem like a good leader. Nobody had thought that deeper in the epic Odysseus’ actions made him turn out to be a bad leader. Homer’s epic The Odyssey is about how Odysseus and his men are journeying back home to Ithaca from the Trojan War. He encountered many obstacles along his journey that cost him the lives of his men. Odysseus faced atrocious monsters, foxy nymphs, and gods out for revenge. The journey that he completed tested his skills not only as leader, but as a human too. Odysseus proves himself to be a bad leader due to him being deceitful, oppressive, and dramatic.
Traits that leaders possess honesty, selflessness, morals, physical and mental strength, forethought, and many more traits. A leader guides their men and women to success. Odysseus does not fit this definition. Odysseus is not a good leader because he didn’t not lead his men to victory, he wasn’t honest to his men, and he cheated on his wife during the journey. This has relevance to this day and age because we have people who are put in position of leadership that make really questionable decisions.
Odysseus was a really good leader for many reasons. The first example or reason is that Odysseus wants to go home safe with his crew.
Odysseus is a strong leader mainly because he does the unthinkable. Back in 6th grade I watched the movie and we had to write the same prompt on this. Since then I have realized many more ways the Odysseus is a strong leader. Many reasons include when he had all the sailors plug their ears with wax so they wouldnt hesr the sirens and crash the ship, or another time when he was faced with Scylla. Overall Odysseus is a strong leader because he tries his best to protects himself and his
The first attribute that makes Odysseus a great leader is the previously mentioned resolve. It is the key for motivating team members, and producing results. Without “solid faith in [their] ideals” (Gavril qtd. in Gleeson 7), no leader can accomplish their goals. Only when both leader and followers believe in the cause, can the group take action. Odysseus has this steadfast determination. He never strayed from his mission of bringing everyone home, even “though he find a house of gold” (Homer 37). Many times his will was challenged when he was offered a safe, happy place to live, but he did not succumb to those temptations. He
Why Odysseus makes for a good leader. First off Odysseus chooses to go to battle with the Greeks even though he does not want to leave his wife and son. Being the good leader he is, he puts aside his own desires and selflessly gives himself to combat for his country. During the Trojan Wat, he is excellent in rivalry. He comes up with the notion to build the Trojan Horse.
