Leadership Reflection

I have learned and heard of several different definitions of leadership during my time in this class. First, during our group meeting with Chancellor Jack Hawkins he defined leadership as “the management of hope.” Next, when I was preparing my two-minute speech I found a definition by Dr. Ben Carson that I enjoyed. He said this, “I think one of the keys to leadership is recognizing that everybody has gifts and talents. A good leader will learn how to harness those gifts toward the same goal.” I especially like this quote because it focuses on the gifts and talents of others, not on the leader, all the leader does is help guide and direct those with the special gifts and talents to the greater goal of success. Accountability is extremely important for me, leaders, and for people in general. If I cannot be held accountable by people, how can I ever expect to be trusted by people. When people entrust me with a job or task I must be determined to see it through to the end, and I must be seen as dependable enough to finish said task. If leaders cannot be accountable, their followers or workers may start to doubt them, and may not be able to use their full potential. Humility is the trait I probably believe to be the most important for leaders. Leaders should never view themselves too highly, and should always place the credit on their colleagues and subordinates. This is a wonderful way to build morale among their workers and it will motivate them to work even harder because they would feel like they are a bigger part in the mission, task, or project being worked on. Leaders however, should never try to claim all the fame, because if they do, it will hurt the trust they have with their colleagues. Pride is something I believe everyone, myself included struggle with and I will always strive to be more humble and kind. As a leader I must be able to lead with several different methods and leadership styles. I must be able to use authoritative, delegative, and participative respectively.
