I have learned and heard of several different definitions of leadership during my time in this class. First, during our group meeting with Chancellor Jack Hawkins he defined leadership as “the management of hope.” Next, when I was preparing my two-minute speech I found a definition by Dr. Ben Carson that I enjoyed. He said this, “I think one of the keys to leadership is recognizing that everybody has gifts and talents. A good leader will learn how to harness those gifts toward the same goal.” I especially like this quote because it focuses on the gifts and talents of others, not on the leader, all the leader does is help guide and direct those with the special gifts and talents to the greater goal of success. Accountability is extremely important for me, leaders, and for people in general. If I cannot be held accountable by people, how can I ever expect to be trusted by people. When people entrust me with a job or task I must be determined to see it through to the end, and I must be seen as dependable enough to finish said task. If leaders cannot be accountable, their followers or workers may start to doubt them, and may not be able to use their full potential. Humility is the trait I probably believe to be the most important for leaders. Leaders should never view themselves too highly, and should always place the credit on their colleagues and subordinates. This is a wonderful way to build morale among their workers and it will motivate them to work even harder because they would feel like they are a bigger part in the mission, task, or project being worked on. Leaders however, should never try to claim all the fame, because if they do, it will hurt the trust they have with their colleagues. Pride is something I believe everyone, myself included struggle with and I will always strive to be more humble and kind. As a leader I must be able to lead with several different methods and leadership styles. I must be able to use authoritative, delegative, and participative respectively. Many may measure leadership in success, however, leadership is also measured in personality. The phrase “born to be a leader” holds true when considering the qualities a leader must possess. To be an effective leader, first it must be understood that respect, logical problem solving, and confidence without arrogance is key; these qualities are present in the leaders of the novel The Lord of the Flies as well as in modern leaders of today’s society.
I feel being a good leader requires having good character. I value being a person whom someone can trust and rely upon. From working at the bedside and providing direct patient care, nurses leaders are in a unique position to promote safe and quality patient care. A systematic review by Wong, Cummings, & Ducharme (2013) found that the relational leadership style resulted in improved patient satisfaction and patient safety outcomes, such as lower patient mortality, reduced medication errors, reduced restrain use, and fewer hospital-acquired infections. With a continuously changing and demanding healthcare environment, identifying and developing nurse leaders is challenging. Self-reflection and awareness is necessary to be a good leader, allowing one to identify limitations in leadership style to develop and improve upon leadership skills.

Leadership is defined as a process whereby an individual influences, motivates, and enable other people to move toward a shared goal. From the article “The empty carriage: Lessons in leadership from Florence Nightingale” by Marge Hegg, there are five lessons on leadership are pointed out: lessons on vigilance, lessons on reverence, lessons on collaboration and coevolution, lessons on engagement and keeping up, and lessons on meaning-making. These lessons make the leadership definition become more clear and easily to understand.
A leader is someone who works together with followers to accomplish a variety of tasks and goals. A variety of qualities are important for leaders to do a wonderful job. Leaders should be trustworthy, honest, intelligent, friendly, positive, and courageous. To be an efficient and upstanding leader, one must be willing to take responsibility when needed and step up often.
As an educational leader, I have encountered several new and existing school policies. I never thought deeply about the various processes and the stakeholders involved in policy formulation and implementation. This semester I am engaged in the course Managing Educational Policy as School Leaders (EDLM 6005). This is Semester III, 2016/2017. My course coordinator is Dr. Timar Stephenson. Dr Stephenson was my course coordinator once before and was very helpful whenever I needed clarification or when I had a difficulty. I am thrilled to embrace the new ideas and learning opportunities embedded in this course since it teaches issues which I experience at work. Dr Stephenson, during his introduction reminded his entire class that success in this course would only be realized through hard work, dedication, and commitment. Therefore, it is imperative that I have the right attitude as I navigate this course. The course involves seven weeks of intense work. I am pleased to have a wonderful group facilitator by the name of Rhonda Joseph who has already given us a BBC to explain the requirements of the course and our first two modules.

Third, the definition of leadership we learned in this class is that leadership is the art and science of influencing the positive transformation of people, organizations, and societies. Finally, if I were asked to define leadership I would define it like this, leadership to me is a gift, a gift that people inherit from the skill and the characteristics that they have developed through their story, and how they use those gifts to build up and guide others.
