As an involved student within the campus community, I have found myself participating in the same activities with different groups. Among those activities is one surrounding leaders – numerous leaders are presented to the group, then people must decide if they believe that “leader” to be a true leader. During the various times I have done this activity, I have noticed that my answers do not necessarily change, but my justifications differ greatly each time. My view of leadership is forever changing with my lived experiences, physical environment, and mental challenges. For me to adequately explain/convey my current stance, I must explore my leadership journey up until this point of my life.
When I was born, both my mother and father were serving active duty in the Army. My brother later joined the military, as well - one of my earliest memories involves my parents, brother, and I loading into the car and dropping my brother off to start his basic-training for the Navy. Surrounded by people who elected to dedicate their lives to serving others framed such an act as the ultimate indication of both courage and leadership, in my eyes. With my mother already retired and my brother retiring only a few years later, my father’s service became a central part of my life. In elementary school, when a student was being bullied, or simply did not like one of their classmates, they would threaten to have their servicemember punish the other student’s servicemember in Physical Training
