Leadership is a highly sought-after and highly valued commodity. In the 20 years since the first edition of this book was published, the public has become increasingly captivated by the idea of leadership. People continue to ask themselves and others what makes good leaders. As individuals, they seek more information on how to become effective leaders. Thus, bookstore shelves are filled with popular books about leaders and advice on how to be a leader. Many people believe that leadership is a way to improve their personal, social, and professional lives. Corporations seek those with leadership ability because they believe

Debate continues as to whether leadership and management are separate processes, but emerging research emphasizes the process of leadership, whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal, rather than developing new ways of defining leadership. Among these emerging leadership approaches are authentic leadership, in which the authenticity of leaders and their leadership is emphasized; spiritual leadership, which focuses on leadership that utilizes values and sense of calling and membership to motivate followers; servant leadership, which puts the leader in the role of servant, who utilizes “caring principles” to focus on followers’ needs to help these followers become more autonomous, knowledgeable, and like servants themselves; and adaptive leadership, in which leaders encourage followers to adapt by confronting and solving problems, challenges, and changes.
After decades of dissonance, leadership scholars agree on one thing: They can’t come up with a common definition for leadership. Because of such factors as growing global influences and generational differences, leadership will continue to have different meanings for different people. The bottom line is that leadership is a complex concept for which a determined definition may long be in flux.
Leadership involves influence. It is concerned with how the leader affects followers. Influence is the
Leadership is, and always has been, a vital aspect of social and economic constructs. It is essential to the survival of societies, industries, organizations, and virtually any group of individuals that come together for a common purpose. However, leadership is difficult to define in a single, definitive sense. As such, theories of leadership, what constitutes a great leader, and how leaders are made have evolved constantly throughout history, and still continue to change today in hopes of improving upon our understanding of leadership, its importance, and how it can be most effective in modern organizational cultures.
One definition of leadership states that it is a process by which a group is influenced and directed by a particular member of the group to reach a common goal (Northouse 2010). Many other definitions exist, suggesting that it is a concept as fluid and individual as leaders themselves (Curtis et al. 2011).
leader. The following definition has been chosen as it reflects the overall stance of the inquiry:
Leadership is the elaboration of group inspiration. One person entrusted as leader can implore the aid, and support of supporters in the accomplishment of a common mission. According to Gurdjian, Halbeisen, and Lane “Becoming a more effective leader often requires changing behavior. But although most companies recognize that this also means adjusting underlying mind-sets, too often these organizations are reluctant to address the root causes of why leaders act the way they do” (Gurdjian, Halbeisen, and Lane, 2014) However, today abundant businesses engross importance on the improvement of leaders. Some of the ultimate leaders were formerly followers, such as in instructive businesses. One aspect as leaders many have to contemplate in striving
Leadership is the ability of an individual or and organisation, to influence other individuals and its team to achieve a desired outcome. Influence is a very under-rated aspect of leadership. No individual would follow a person who does not have
Leadership is defined as the ability to obtain followers (Maxwell). Obtaining a following is dependent on one's influence on others. Essentially, everyone influences someone, whether one intentionally influences a
Leadership is all about influence. It is motivating and inspiring followers to engage in a vision. Leadership brings together the
In my opinion the term leadership is a very broad and various definitions are given by authors. One definition of leadership is that it is
There are many definitions for the term leadership. This term have different meanings to each individual. Leadership is defined as a complex phenomenon involving the leader, the followers, and the situation (Hughes, Ginnett & Curphy, 2012). Leadership is a quality that one can gain through employment experience and/or through education and can also be gained through mentorship. There are many different leadership styles that a leader may fall under. Each type of leadership style has its own uniqueness that makes the leader fall under that particular
In this paper, I will summarize the readings that we did in Module 1, based on leadership research. This review will examine the two readings and a YouTube video that define what leadership means and also the characteristics needed to become an effective leader.
There are certain essential elements that constitute the definition of leadership. It may refer to the totality of an organization’s top direction-giving functionaries, or the actions applied in providing direction that enables the organization or team to move forward towards a goal. In reality, there are very diverse definitions of leadership depending on
Leadership is very influential. Without any influence there is no leadership. It concerns the leader’s influence on the followers and how it affects them. Influencing a group of people who have a common purpose is leadership. It could be a small task which involves a small group or a community group, a large group, or an entire organisation. It is all about how a leader influences the group members to accomplish a set goal or
Let us start by defining the term “leadership”. Is that even possible? Like art, leadership is subjective, and we can only define it when we see it. Sociologists and authors such as Rost, Burns, Bennis and Mintzberg have all argued that the actual study of leadership is flawed in that there have been numerous studies identifying it, but very few defining what it actually is. Again, we can only identify it, when we see it taking place.
Scholars agree that there is no one definition of leadership and it remains a complex concept. Therefore, we will look into some of the complex concepts of leadership to bring about a personal perspective. Face value per the dictionary is that leadership is the act of guidance, direction, control, management, superintendence, supervision, power, rule, and influence of a person or organization. Per our text, Northouse (2016) defines leadership as “a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal” (p .4). A simple search on the net can reveal a plethora of slogans that give us insight to conceptualization of its meaning, but are able to grasp and avail the bottom line of its true meaning. My answer is ‘No’, leadership means different things to different people, and hence leaders in different organizations will project adverse leadership concepts within those organizations compared to others. Northouse (2016) further clarify this conundrum with his reference to “Stogdill (1974, p. 7) points out that a review of his leadership research, there are almost as many different definitions of leadership as there are people who have tried to define it” (p. 2).
For decade’s individuals, companies, and organizations have spent an unprecedented amount of money on researching, molding, modeling and working to define what a leader is and what characteristics make successful leaders. Despite all the research, there is not a quick answer or even full agreement as to what makes an individual an effective leader. The definition of a leader is “someone who can influence others and who has managerial authority.” (Robbins, Decenzo, Coulter, 2015. P.370)
