My leadership philosophy is to be approachable, understanding and kind towards others. To make sound decisions under stressful situations. I believe that teamwork, communication and collaboration can resolve any challenge. Through personality assessments I learned that I needed to incorporate and balance various types of leadership skills such as participative, delegative and authoritarian. I learned to implement different leadership theories like Contingency, and Transnational leadership. I had to learn how to be a leader verses a manager. I also learned and incorporated different leadership roles such as community leadership, conceptual leadership and an advocacy leadership role. In developing good leadership skills, the personality assessment was the first step I took to discover what type of leader I am. I learned that I have a participative leadership style. This style often leads to effective and accurate decision making because I rely on my staff to help in the decision making process. However, I discovered that to be a good leader I needed to balance out my skills between participative, delegative and authoritarian styles.

Every leader needs to know when and how to display a particular approach of leadership within a group. Leadership strategies define every leader’s personal leadership style. Three leadership styles of a counselor are the following: authoritarian style leaders, democratic style leaders, and laissez-faire style leaders.

For this assignment, I have decided to use the leadership trait, skills and style questionnaires. For this questionnaire, I asked 5 different people that know me in different contexts in life, such as personal, school, and work environments. For the majority, I rated myself higher on the traits than my fellow colleagues. On some of the traits however, I was rated higher than what I thought. Overall, I averaged a 4/5 which means that everyone agreed with the traits that were given. For the style questionnaire, I found out that I place more emphasis in building relationships rather than completing tasks. Finally, the skills questionnaire, my leadership skills are in the high range for technical skills, and my human and conceptual skills are in the moderate range.
I had no clue how the online assessments that I took would help me, like any other person would think. But later, when I took the tests, I realized the importance of these assessments which gave me an insight of my true self, and helped me pin point my strengths and weaknesses in almost every department. These assessments helped me connect more to myself and the people around me. In this paper, I am going to discuss all the results from the various tests I took online and show how they reflect my leadership style and how I analyze the results to my own leadership potential, with help of examples experienced by me in life.
The six leading styles: Ambassador (19/25), advocate (20/25), people mover (21/25), truth-seeker (20/25), creative builder (18/25), and experienced guide (21/25) scored the highest on my leadership style assessment. The characteristics which were identified as strengths of mine are mainly relationship oriented such as diffusing difficult situations, advocating in a group, seeing the potential in people, maintaining fairness and neutrality, and empathy. These were not a surprise to me as I have taken other leadership assessments and have always scored the same types of characteristics.
I did very well on the leadership skill assessment test. I scored 82, which means I am on my way to be a good leader. From the test, I learned I need to improve my confidence and work on providing support and stimulation. I also need to improve how I handle the performance of my employees. My self-confidence improved after doing the SWOT analysis assignment. Asking my friends, family and even co-workers how they viewed me was a huge eye opener. My co-workers' input was the biggest factor. I never realized they viewed me so highly. I feel it has helped me as well as a team because I am less afraid to make mistakes. I am more upfront with them which helps clarify what we need to be working on. I would say after reviewing my assessment test and reading the chapter my leadership style would be situational.
When taking the two leadership surveys, it was interesting to see my personal leadership profile. My leadership style according to the survey is the instructional type, which in another world is direct leadership. My culture, upbringing, and work environment have transformed me to be direct leaders that are looking for stability. My staff members sadly do not have the opportunity to have a job that is autonomy; working in a manufacturing occupation, one has an organize agenda that cannot be deviated from the task ahead. When team members are needing help or trying to build the familiarity to run their equipment my personal leadership profile can be helpful, since being direct is a starting point to build knowledge.
