Large corporations have this idea that the harder they push employees and the more they drive productivity, the higher the revenue. What they often misjudge is the impact, over time that this approach can have on managers and their staff including burnout, loss of vision, and loss of compassion for their work. Furthermore, leaders that adopt this bureaucracy approach to leadership potentially risk losing profit margins for those reasons alone. On the contrary, "the heart of leadership is in the heart of leaders" and portrays the belief that leaders who lead with heart develop visions they are compassionate about, providing guidance in times of triumph and tribulation for not only themselves but their staff (Masters, 2014). Additionally, a compassionate leader inspires others to reveal their leadership qualities knowing their efforts will be met with love and understanding. A good leader makes intelligent decisions that support their organizations goals while maintaining their soulful vision. This prevents loss of compassion and continues to fuel their reason for being. Leading with heart takes courage and vulnerability because it demands leaders to search their own soul for purpose and reason, frequently uprooting past emotions and buried fears, but one is incapable of leading with heart until they know their own heart. They need not only to provide structure and constructive criticism, but they as well need to be inspirational, honest, and empathetic. Leaders who allow
According to the textbook, Introduction to Leadership: Concepts and Practice, there are over 100 definitions of the word “leadership”, and all of them are unique in their own way (Northouse, 2015, p.1). There are so many different aspects to leadership that is it nearly impossible to have one definition that covers every area. Each and every person that is a considered a leader has his or her own way of leading because every situation, whether it be work, a team, at home, etc., calls for different and distinctive ways of leading people. Northouse states that there are six main aspects of leadership; it’s a trait, ability, skill, behavior, relationship, and an influential process (Northouse, p. 3-6). Giving a clear answer as to what leadership is defined as is very difficult, but this paper will talk about my specific leadership skills and what leadership means to me.
The World Book Dictionary, Volume Two L-Z, 1980 edition, defines leadership as the condition of being a leader; the ability to lead; and guidance or direction. According to Nathan F. Iannone, author of many books on leadership, it can be defined as the art of influencing, directing, guiding, and controlling others in such a way as to obtain their willing obedience, confidence, respect and loyal cooperation in accomplishment of an objective. Leadership is a trait that is extremely valuable in any society. Leadership is known as a relational process of people attempting to make a difference in a situation. Because of this and the moral and social influence leaders have in our lives, it is very important to know more about it. Leaders must create the environment within which they and their group can succeed. They do this by sharing common values and goals, providing the resources necessary for goal attainment, and empowering their people to do the job. John Gardner tells us in his book On Leadership, "a leader must recognize the needs of the individuals, help the individuals see how those needs can be met, and give the group confidence that they can accomplish that result through their own efforts. A leader draws the best out of people, encouraging them to put forth their best effort rather than forcing them to do something. In my opinion the four strengths needed for a leadership potion are: planning, management, decision making, and encouragement.
Leadership is not just a ten letter words. It is a concept to define various elements required to have some sort of authority while performing any nature of tasks. The basic element for good leadership are knowledge, imagination, determination, integrity, ability etc. with a situation or circumstances at any of the construction site, I will elaborate a clear picture of practises actually mandatory by a supervisor. Considerable factors in this exercise will be the status and life style of the work force.
In order to better understand the ideals of leadership, I met with two respected and admired school leaders: the Assistant Principal/Dean of Curriculum, and the Athletic Director. I chose these two school leaders because I wanted to gain an understanding of leadership from two diverse perspectives. I am thankful for the opportunity to hear from two different types of leaders, who ultimately share a lot of the same visions for my school and for leadership in general.
It is impossible to escape the message here that if people work with leaders who encourage the heart, they feel better about themselves. Their self-esteem goes up. These leaders set people's spirits free, often inspiring them to become more than they ever thought possible. This, indeed, may be our ultimate mission as leaders.
After completing the two readings, “Why People Follow” and “Salsa, Soul, and Spirit”, I now have a better understanding of leadership techniques that could strengthen communities as well as the performance of companies. I wasn’t very surprised when seeing the four needs of followers from “Why People Follow”: trust, compassion, hope, and stability. I thought that those were all characteristics that were ideal to any strong and effective leader. Of the four, I felt the most surprise with compassion. I didn’t know how much being compassionate could have a lasting impact to those that follow you. I thought before that leaders would focus more on instructing their workers rather than give love to those that listen. I saw on the reading that those that have compassionate leaders are far
The text will cover a number of different aspects of leadership. We will consider my personal understanding of leadership and it relates to certain leadership theories. In my philosophy of leadership, I will address what role I believe a health care leader should play, what leadership theory they should follow, and why leaders should follow that theory. It will describe my current sphere of influence and how it has shaped my understanding of leadership. I will explain how I am a leader in my current position and how I apply my leadership philosophy within my position. Then I will provide how I see the use of informal, formal, positive and negative power as it applies to my personal philosophy of leadership.
The final section is a summary of learning acquired from the assignment that is useful to the author’s own
Situational approach is either applying supportive or directive behaviors to specific situations. Every situation is unique which is why different methods should be applied accordingly, depending on the dynamics of the situation. To determine what behaviors are needed, a leader must analyze his or her followers’ commitment and competence.
It is very well said by Don Shula “I don’t know any other way to lead but by an example” (Shula). I strongly favour this quote for my life as well. I am an aspiring Human Resource Manager and with my masters in Human Resource, I can make a significant change in any organization by setting examples for my team. As already discussed are
Kevin never liked leading. Maybe it was the automatic expectation that leaders had to have a charismatic character, inspire others to commit to the cause without a thought otherwise, and forthright with gaining what they wanted no matter what. He fits neither of those standards—so why was Satan following so close behind him, not bothering to speak one word of polite conversation. They will be working on a mission pretty soon together and they haven’t formulated how they were going to go about that.
Northouse 's, Leadership: Theory and Practice, provides several major theories and models of leadership within the text. It presents in-depth theories of leadership and how it applies to real life situations. Northouse believed that the four essential components of leadership that he identified as leadership is a process, involves influence, occurs in groups, and involves common goals. Thus, he defines leadership as a process that occurs in groups which involve influence, and common goals. The book is easy to read and is a good reference to continue to consult throughout one 's leadership vocation.
I can honestly say that I am fortunate to feel like I have been training my whole life to be an extraordinary leader. Every experience has been a lesson and every lesson has paved the path to where I currently stand. I never really thought of it being something you are born with but something that needs to be nurtured and matured. I am not the same leader I was as a kid fresh out of high school running Little Caesar pizza in Willow Grove on summer breaks and whenever I would come home from Norfolk State. The role of leader has evolved as I am sure I have also. Today’s leader is multidimensional and has an integrative view of leadership that is based on building relationships through shared purposes and aspirations. As I think about the leader
This is an introduction to the Leadership Archetype Questionnaire (Kets de Vries, 2006b), introduced in Chapter 12 of the textbook “Leadership: Theory and Practice” by Peter Northouse (Northouse, 2016). The Leadership Archetype Questionnaire gauges a leader’s perception of his/her style of leadership by identifying the key leadership behaviors they display, based on different leadership prototypes (Northouse, 2016). The following is a brief summary of the resulting findings of the questionnaire, as well as a paragraph with a short assessment of the results. Finally, a brief analysis of the impact the characteristics of the psychodynamic approach might have on one’s personal leadership style.
