The basis upon which effective leaders are empowered does not always equate with placing the right person in the position; in fact, the extent to which leadership theories merely provide an outline of what is expected of a good leader is both grand and far-reaching. Just as a simple job description only scratches the surface of finding the right employee, the overall impact of a leader cannot be solely hinged upon the oft-inadequate specifics of leadership theories. Anyone can follow the guidelines of a given leadership theory and carry out the compulsory specifications, however, there are myriad more innate qualifications to effective leadership than what can either be taught from or redeemed by a simple list of qualifications.
II. THEORIES AND LEADERS Determining what it takes to become a good leader – receptively influential, compassionate, communicative, dynamic – has long been up for debate between/among those who support various theories. Two of the most examined theories, which call upon the inherent – and perhaps even genetic - aspects of leadership qualification – are the Great Man and Trait theories. The former relies upon a patriarchal disposition, while the latter draws from a viewpoint of such characteristics being inborn. Today’s organizations face ever-increasing change, which includes increased patient demands and work needs, which requires a more adaptive flexible leadership that is becoming increasingly important in the 21st century. Leadership theory and philosophy can be divided into several well-known styles. Within this paper, we will discuss the basis of autocratic, democratic, laissez faire, servant, charismatic, transformational, and situational styles of leadership within the nursing profession, then conclude the writer’s personal philosophies of leadership.
As a growing debate, the question at hand is whether great leaders are born with specific leadership traits, or if one can be taught certain traits over time. According to (Wikipedia.com) the approach of listing leadership qualities, often termed "trait theory of leadership", assumes certain traits or characteristics will tend to lead to effective leadership. I believe that leadership traits such as honest, competent, initiative, inspiring, hardworking, intelligent, and the ability to lead the masses, are some of the leadership traits one should possess. Within this paper, I will examine the overall concept of leadership traits, while observing the traits that were, or can be associated with successful leaders.

In the early 20th century, leadership traits were studied to determine what made certain people great leaders. Researchers were looking to see if distinct leaders were born with special traits. The theories that were developed are called “great man” theories because they focused on identifying the innate qualities and characteristics possessed by great political, social, and military leaders. During this time, research concentrated on determining the specific traits that clearly differentiated leaders from followers (Bass, 1990; Jago, 1982).
Robbins and Judge (2017) concluded that individuals, who possess traits, by themselves, does not guarantee that these individuals will be great leaders; however, presence of certain traits can help to predict the leadership potential of an individual (p. 385). Robbins and Judge (2017) defined leadership as, “the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or set of goals” (p. 382). Explaining how leadership happens cannot be answered by trait theories (Robbins & Judge, 2017, p. 384).
‘Leadership’ is a term thrown around a lot in the modern world. It is said that leadership is the way to move forward and someone at all times need to appointed at this role. Sadly it is not clear to anyone what the term means and which leadership theory is the best. Theorists argue that ‘trait theory’ or ‘great man theory’ is the best for today’s world but I disagree with them. As I believe the ‘situational leadership’ is the best, not only for now but also the foreseeable future. In this essay I will analyse a leadership theory and evaluate its impact on my professional practice. I will do so by explaining what situational theory is, provide few strengths and weaknesses and evaluate how the theory informed my teaching practice. It is true that over the years theories have evolved and/or adapted themselves to fit the society. Let us all see if my chosen theory fits today’s technological world or not.

She always will be the first to tell you that, without dedicated and committed team members who enthusiastically choose to follow, they can accomplish little. She also tells you that the best investment is the time she spent with her team members, time spent in learning about each team member 's wants and needs, time learning about each team member 's values and priorities.
