The National Health Service (NHS) should be providing a high standard of care, with a work force that can handle continuous change. To accomplish this, the NHS needs to have health care professionals who can implement leadership skills and become role models for others (Oliver, 2006). Mohoney (2001) states that ‘the development of future nurse leaders is one of the biggest challenges faced by the nursing profession’. Nurse leaders have extra responsibility to facilitate action, to implement and devise the appropriate change strategies needed to increase clinical excellence, quality, value and access to a patient-centred care environments (O 'Grady, 2011). This essay will explore the principles of leadership and change management skills implemented by the Inpatient Diabetic Specialist Nurse in the placement situation.

The objective of this paper is to identify the various difficulties that arise at my work environment and how it relates to the previous leadership style. This paper will first discuss the possible staff related causes of increase in incidence reporting in the ward. It will be followed by a focus group discussion on inter-staff issues and their perception towards current leadership in the ward. I will then analyse the different leadership approaches and examine how it affects work ethics and quality of care in my ward. For this, review of literature on various types of leadership and its impact on staff performance will be carried out. Finally, strategies to improve the current work culture will be explored and discussed.
The developing world faces many critical health challenges. Addressing the multitude of concerns regarding health delivery can seem overwhelming, and it is critical that the national leadership is able to define specific goals to improve the healthcare infrastructure of these nations and devise targeted solutions. According to the article "Attracting and Retaining Nurse Tutors in Malawi," the nursing profession in Malawi faces a critical shortage of nurse technicians, at a rate of up to 80 percent in certain areas (Caffrey & Frelick 2006:1). The problems in Malawi lay in the willingness of students to enter the profession as well as a shortage of educators. Without nurse tutors to train nurse technicians, it will be a struggle to provide the countryside with needed health services in the future.
Gamble and Vaux (2014) in their clinical medicine, came up the idea that there are two type of leadership, ‘Leaders with a big ‘L’’, this is the top level leaders like the CEO’s and Leaders with a small ‘l’, the leaders with a small l is the day to day leadership which focuses on day-to-day leadership of our teams, wards, units and departments. Understanding the roles of these leaders will help organisation that are entering into the global market to better understand the leadership style that will be most successful to the organisation.
