One task of leadership is to communicate clearly the vision and objectives of the organisation to their team, with the intent of helping every person involved understand what work needs to be done and why, and what part of the individual plays in the overall task.
But effective communication does more than just convey information. In an effective communication transaction a message is conveyed with shared meaning. The message you think you are sending may not be the same message being received.
Communication needs to be genuinely interactive, with the team members building on each others comments and suggestions adding fresh perspective in order to move things forward. Everybody within the team needs to develop their own interactive and communication skills, they will need to know how to talk with, explain to, agree with, disagree with, listen to and convince. As humans we are dependant, independent and interdependent on others within our environment.
So what is communication? Communication is the imparting or exchanging of information or news and it can be both verbal and nonverbal. Communication to and with others is deemed as “the bridge”.
Everything that is written or spoken is verbal and nonverbal is the use of body language and is a very powerful factor of communication. It can include posture, gestures, facial expressions and eye contact.
But no two people are alike and everybody communicates differently and all too
