There are many influences on personal learning and what processes of learning benefits each individual. Some of these learning influences can have an impact, however they can also have benefits for others in a way of an individual sharing their knowledge with another. Within the learning sector there has been many theorists who have created learning cycles, the ones I will be talking about are Kolb’s experiential learning cycle and Gibb’s reflective cycle.
Kolb’s experiential learning cycle is a theory that argues that we learn from our experiences of life on a daily basis. Cognitive ability is the way people learn and Kolb believed from an early age we begin to develop a sort of instinctive preference as to the way we process information and use it. Kolb (1984) believes that the process of learning follows a pattern or cycle. Kolb’s cycle is made up of 4 stages; the first stage is concrete experience and Kolb believes that life is full of loads of different experiences that everyone can learn from and whether you are at home, work, school or even out shopping that there was experiences everywhere within those sectors and that it was a way for us to start the learning cycle. The concrete experience is the doing stage, the stage where you have the experience. We then have stage two which is reflective observation, this stage involved looking back at our experiences and reflecting on them. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that there are different theories based on how an individual learns. These theories are based on individuality rather than a group as a whole. I will compare and contrast the different learning theories as previously determined by educators Malcom S. Knowles which used Andragogy and Pedagogy compared to David Kolb which uses Experiential learning, through interactions and research of this subject.

My personal learning does not only have an impact on me but on the others around me as well, my family, friends, and staff at my placement are an example of people that is affect my personal learning and development. I have the capability to assist others by using knowledge and skills that I have obtained by learning and by own experiences. I believe that by sharing this knowledge and skills I can benefit others and I also believe that I can share my own experiences with others, for example if I have been through a bad experience I can advice others and help them gain knowledge about it and if they go through the same experience that I did they would not need to have to
Another of my teaching methods delivered is by way of ‘on the job’ training which allows me to assess their progress, explore their knowledge and skill by observing and questioning their processes. This method of teaching falls in with Kolbs (1984) four stage experiential learning cycle.
ii. Another important factor I must consider when identifying the needs of my learners is their learning process. A commonly used theory of learning process is that of Kolb (1984) who describes four different stages of the learning process as; Concrete experience, observation and reflection, abstract conceptualisation, and active experimentation. This theory particularly gained insight into the fact that greater understanding is achieved by learners when different and appropriate means are deployed to teach the same concept.
Kolb’s theory (1984) is based on a four-stage learning cycle in which the learner contacts all the stages. These stages include first, concrete experience (how an individual encounters a situation), second, reflective observation (what an individual thinks about the situation), third, abstract conceptualization (how the individual analyzes the situation), and fourth, active experimentation (how the individual’s use of the conclusions in a situation change or prepare for another situation) (p. 21). Kolb also understood that individuals have different learning styles. Some individuals learn by observing while others learn by hands-on experience. Therefore, Kolb created side cycles to explain where in the learning cycles an individual’s learning style would fall. Although Kolb’s theory is a
My experience from the case study influenced my own belief system in line with Kolb’s (1978) experiential learning, where a learner is able to reflect on past experience to change practice or theories.
Teaching and Learning consists of various different theories that educators may or may not feel applicable to their individual philosophy. There are bits and pieces of a variety of theories that many educators feel are important in the classroom. The purpose of this paper is to explain the personal learning theory and how it is applied in a classroom. After an educator takes the time to research and do further learning by reading a variety of written books, the educator may or maynot change things in the classroom or focus on a different topic that they had not previously focused on in the past.
Although this limitation can become a barrier for the experiential learning theory Rogers’ developed, it is possible for this to overcome this with patience. As the main purpose of this theory is to allow personal growth within the student, we must note that personal growth appears differently for each individual learner. The role of the facilitator is to help engage all types of students in self-motivated learning to help them improve their overall growth from significant information.

I have always believed that we learn by our own experiences. I think that this belief that I have lived by is why I was so intrigued by this particular learning theory. I will be discussing Kolb’s Cycle of Experiential Learning. I will explain the definition of this particular type of learning style and how it explains how as an individual one learns. I will be describing the four different stages of Kolb’s learning cycle and Kolb’s four different learning styles. I will also discuss how this learning style will essentially help me with lifelong learning beyond my BAAS degree in a personal and professional manner.
