It has been a bumpy road to get where I am now. It has been a bumpy road because the subject English was where I was the weakest. It started from learning my ABC’s to writing two to seven paged papers. My literacy journey started in elementary school, then middle school, and then high school. It has not ended there because I still have college to go through for more learning. My learning path in literacy has come a long way. In my elementary school days, I learned how to say my ABC’s, how to write
My journey of learning English when I was a little girl. I heard another language other than mine spoken on the TV; then is when my fascination with languages began, especially English. It was the language spoken of some of my favorite cartoons that I watched at that time, so I began to listen to it carefully so I could understand what was said in them. When my older brother went to seventh grade, he started taking English classes in his school; it was the grade that students started learning English
many skills that are critical to acquire, during childhood and as you become older. One of the most important and useful skill you will need is writing. From first, learning to write words and sentences, to more advanced writing like essays. Everyone learns to write a little differently, some ways are learning from your parents or learning words and letters in kindergarten. Learning to be a good writer has been a journey to me. There are a lot of moments where I struggled a lot with writing. My English writing journey starts four years ago when I come to the United States of America for the first time with only knowing accountable words in English. I often spend countless hours thinking of what I should write, following the correct style of writing, using appropriate vocabulary, and understandable and correct grammar sentences. With a lot of practice and guidance starting
Throughout my educational journey, I have been my own motivator. My parents always support me, but they do not pressure me to make A’s on every assignment or to be at the top of my class. Instead, I choose to push myself because of my own desire to reach my full potential. I see GHP as another fantastic way for me to push and improve myself. Being surrounded by other students who share my determination would produce an environment in which I would excel. The students who participate in GHP truly
Being a college student is so hard and I know that a lot of people can relate to this. You spend long hours studying for subjects that you are not interested in, you are constantly being judged by how well you perform your tasks, an exam determines how much you know, regardless of your actual knowledge on subjects, and the system lets your GPA define you as a person. Not to mention the impact that college can have on your mental and physical health. And a friend asked me the other, do you really think
challenges that have made us who we are today. For me, I have dealt with the challenge of my family’s coming to America when I was very young, with no English skills. My family and I come to the US from a refugee camp in Thailand when I was 10. My parents had fled Burma to the camp 14 years before and started their family there. I am the oldest of 6 kids - 4 of whom were born in the camp. As soon as we got on the plane, I could tell that our journey was going to be a challenge. My parents and I could
My education journey started in preschool when I would struggle to speak english because my first language was spanish. It was difficult for me to comprehend what my teacher or classmates were saying. The same thing happened in kindergarten I could not really communicate as well or pronounce words correctly.I had to go to tutoring or I would get extra help from the teacher. I felt like the “dumb kid” in class because I was not able to say certain types of words that the whole class already knew.
Writing has always been like taking the pink liquid medicine when you were a kid to me. A simple task that you know it's the best for you but it is so hard to swallow or get the nerve to attempt to do even though you know it won't kill you and you should do it. I have always dreaded writing anything that I have to, even if it is a letter home to my family it still takes me forever to gather ideas and put words on paper. Since I was little, I have always been put in with the higher level reading
I’d say that being bilingual it is something that has been implemented to my life at a very young age. I come from a Mexican family, a very traditional Mexican family, we love being together and always take advantage to celebrate in any occasion and if there is not a special occasion we make up one just to gather and have a good time. Most of my cousins understand and speak clearly English. Also my aunt married an American and the funny thing is that her children look completely American, in the
