Learning Style Assessment
Every person is different. Each individual learn and acquire knowledge through his own unique style. Some individuals are outspoken who tend to acquire knowledge in a lively classroom environment with lot of interactions happening, while other individuals, like myself, prefer a lonely silent place and do self study rather than a classroom environment. Based on research done, the ways in which people acquire knowledge have been categorized on the basis of learning styles. As of today there are three basic learning styles namely auditory, visual and kinesthetic.

“Just as students have different personalities, they also have different ways of learing (Slavin, 107).” Learning styles are another important factor to incorporate when implementing the best learning environment. Learning styles are defined as an individual's mode of gaining knowledge. The most common learning styles addressed are auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. Auditory leaners understand information through hearing. Visual learners need more visual aids in the learning process, such as diagrams, webs, or pictures. Kinesthetic learners learn better by using manipulatives or by being physically involved in the learning process. Learning styles is a piece of the “backbone” of differentiated learning. Both are used to individualize instruction to help students achieve the most success.

The test, Learning Styles Inventory, was created by David Kolb in 1984. This test tells you how you best learn things. There's three results that you can end up with, Auditory, Tactile, and Visual. If you were a visual learner, you'd learn better by seeing and watching how things are done, or practicing with flashcards and such. If you were an Auditory learner, you'd learn better by hearing directions or what to do. It is also helpful if you make a song on what you want to learn. If you were a Tactile learner, then you learn better hands-on.Touching things, tracing letters to a word with your finger, or even holding or squeezing something while you study might help. You would take this test to see how you could study best, or maybe you can't
From doing the Learning Style Inventory, I learned that I learn better when I write things down and when I have a visual of the information I am learning. For my writing style way of learning, I found I should take notes. When the professors give us notes I should write them in my hand writing. I just need to be able to read my notes because I write so fast some times.
The information obtained by completing the Learning Style Inventory test was I am a kinesthetic learner (Bethel University, 2013). There are no surprises to the fact I am a kinesthetic learner I found this information out a few years ago going through testing for promotions. There were always issues for me in grade school to middle school with staying with the class and not daydreaming. By the time I got into high school I obtained the ability to use my auditory and visual learning styles to complete high school with decent grades. It is unfortunate that kinesthetic learners do not get the chance to use their interactive style of learning because it not represented in the classroom (Mobley, K., & Fisher, S. 2014). Before taking the Learning Style Inventory, I always felt I was mostly a tactile learner. I would be able to learn in a visual fashion if need be, but I would rather learn and by doing and making mistakes. After taking the Learning Style Inventory, the results definitely supported my initial thoughts. My tactile preference was 14 points higher than my auditory score, but only 2 points higher than my visual. Although I believe I will always will be a stronger tactile learner, my visual learner skills have been improving throughout my college learning experience. Plus, it’s important to note that many tactile learning situations are dependent on visual learning. This means that tactilely learning has been strengthening my visual learning skills.
Different people understand and process information in different ways. While people may or may not learn exactly the same way, people tend to be grouped under three learning styles: auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. Auditory learners process things through hearing. These people learn best by listening to lectures and reading out loud. Visual learners, on the other hand, comprehend and understand information using their eyes. They learn via reading textbooks and watching videos. Lastly, kinesthetic learners take in information by doing things. These people tend to pace while studying and have to move around a lot.
In the learning styles test, it resulted that I am a visual learner. I believe that this is true because I would rather to see a demonstration of what I am supposed to do so I can be able to do it by myself later on. It is effective for me when I am studying because I can remember what I saw as opposed to what I heard. Also, I get distracted easily therefore if a class session tends to be long and only involves discussions and talking, I tend to space out a lot. The results says that visual learners should always be sure to look at the study materials and make use of flash cards, which I tend to do all the time. My primary learning style is by visual and hands on methods since I scored the highest in those two areas. The scores in these areas were very close to each other with the visual score being an 8 and the hands on score being a 7, while my listening score being the lowest; a number 4. I believe that it is important for me to know this information about myself because it gives me insights on what my strengths, habits, and weaknesses are while at the same time, enabling me to find learning styles and strategies that are best effective for me. Without knowing this information, I could study for an endless amount of hours on a subject and still fail the exam because there is no point in learning or studying if you don’t absorb and retain the information
