It’s important for all us to strive to continuously improve in our daily lives and our students are no different. In our classroom, we learn study skills that will help us reach our potential. We will address our students learning styles, time management and organization skills, note- taking skills, test-taking skills, and reading skills. All of this will be done by incorporating Learning to Learn by Gloria Freder. This book uses proven practical hints, methods, procedures, and tools that help students succeed in school and in life.

While reading “Becoming a Learner” by Matthew L. Sanders, I found many interesting points on college education that I have never really focused on. One of my favorite statements that Sanders makes is that “who you are still matters more than what you can do because it speaks to your long term potential for success.” I thought this was very interesting and inspiring because it is encouraging the reader to focus on developing themselves rather than some impractical skills. I also thought it was really cool when Sanders made the point that “it’s not only what you do that counts; it’s also how you do it.” I thought that this quote is relatable on so many different levels, especially in the aspect of college. Growing up is the most important part of our lives. We start to develop a persona and start to see the world and people for who they are. The most important part of growing up is our teenage years. Our bodies and minds change and we begin to start preparing for adulthood. The Learning Tree written by Gordon Parks is a book about Newt Winger who is a black young boy growing up in Kansas in the 1920s when Jim Crow was still alive, Newt learns about sex, racism, and alcoholism.
The first two chapters of “What the Best College Students Do” cover several topics. Throughout the chapters, the lives and experiences of different college students are explored. A reoccurring theme in the book is the concept of learning styles. Essentially, the three learning styles are memorization, comprehension, and strategy. According to the author, comprehension is the most effective style of learning. While everyone will possess one of these three learning styles, it is not impossible for someone to adjust to another style. Additionally, the author elaborates on academic ideas such as independence, grades, and outside influences.
Being able to effectively learn is one of the most important and crucial skills that we, as humans, will ever use in this life. The book Make It Stick is written by Peter Brown, Henry Roediger, Mark McDaniel, and was published in 2014. In it is information about how our minds work and useful learning strategies. While most of the book is focused on learning in schools, there are also sections on teaching, and how the strategies can be applied in the real world. In order to get the most out of this book it is important to reflect on how well we have done in the past, and how we will use the information in the future.
Cleopatra VII: Daughter of the Nile written by Kristina Gregory, takes place in Egypt, 57 B.C. Cleopatra VII is the main character. The book opens with her at 12 years old. She is compassionate, mature, and linguistic. Her father has gone into hiding because there have been several rumors about the common people revolting and planning to assassinate the king. Her oldest sister Tryphaena is taking advantage of their father’s absence.
Some future college students are born with a natural talent in the subject English. Which includes critical thinking, writing, and reading. While for others, possibly being mathematicians, English is and probably will never be their keen subject in life. Students find more passions in sciences, arts, and medical teachings which is not something to look down upon. Although, many students forget that English is still a huge part of all these subjects. Where ever these students go they will find the necessity to read something or to write something. That’s where college English comes in handy. College English prepares students for academic writing at a university level, and also for their careers when formal writing is required. Many students fear college English classes, but there are many ways to succeed in these college English classes. Looking over the articles Becoming an Active Learner by Skip Downing, Brianology by Carol S. Dweck, and The Right to Fail by Willliam Zinsser, these authors express their feelings on being able to succeed in life in a general view. Mainly taking education into consideration. Students should not be afraid of college English classes because their are many ways to succeed in them by establishing a growth mindset, creating an active learning pattern, and having a positive and mature attitude.
This student’s preferred learning strategy compared to the learning strategy provided by V.A.R.K. is almost identical. The learning strategies that have been used throughout her education have always netted good results, which is evident by her grades. In the past other students have commented about her learning style and the amount of time spent on note taking, outlines, and writing out note cards, but she has perfected this process for her learning style.

The gods of Greece have a very interesting history. They had many beliefs for the gods and goddesses. Citizens of greece for many years have believed that there was many powerful beings that controlled everything. All of them had a role. Greeks had an entire way of life due to the gods like: origin, art, legends, proficiencies,and types of gods.
Right brain? Left brain? Both sides are very different and have their own characteristics that help determine what a persons potential strengths and weaknesses will be. “The human brain is split into two halves, each with its own unique abilities. This phenomenon, discovered three decades ago by Nobel Prize winner Dr. Roger Sperry and his associates at the California Institute of Technology, is known as brain lateralization” (Raudsepp, 1992, p. 85). Certain characteristics of a person can go so much deeper then just hobbies that a person enjoys. Brain function can play a major role in how a person perceives their surroundings, such as if someone like to draw or do math. On the other side of that if a person is very analytical and good at subjects in school such as math it could be linked to which side of their brain is dominant.
Teaching is not merely about methods used and material presented in the classroom, but about shaping students’ lives to help them construct a firm foundation for a successful future. I desire to teach my students basic life skills as well as challenge them to set and reach their highest goals.
My measurements of success are found in each and every student I teach. One of the most rewarding experiences I have had while student teaching, was watching a child’s face light up at the pivotal moment when they grasp a new concept or master a new skill. In fact, those “aha” moments are my motivators which feed my desire to look for better ways to ensure all students experience those same “aha” moments. As an effective teacher, I am determined and dedicatef to the continual process of researching, implementing, collecting and analyzing data to ensure I am improving upon the curriculum, instructional strategies, and assessment used in my classroom. Learning is a never-ending process. The better skilled I become as a teacher, the better the learning experience I can provide for my students. Therefore, the more I actively research, implement, and reflect, the greater the opportunity for giving my students the education they deserve and hopefully, the inspiration to pursue their own lifelong love of learning.
Lastly, by actively engaging students in a variety of interesting activities that encourage critical thinking and discovery, time misbehavior is minimized. The key is preparation and participation. Having activities and lessons prepared will negate the acts of sleeping, misbehavior, and/or sitting idly for the bell to ring. Furthermore, collaborative strategies can be used to help students become self-reliant learners that take responsibility for their own learning. For instance, when students explain the purpose of learning the material, they can assess their own progress and the relevancy to their lives.
Personal learning styles are highly complex and unique to specific individuals. It is often difficult to pinpoint an exact learning style. Though there are different categories, we often fine tune them to our own abilities. By examining our traits and tendencies we create a clearer understanding of how we process and learn information. With careful review, I have developed a specific analysis of my learning characteristics, including an evaluation of skill levels. Based on what I have recently learned and know from experience, I have also devised a structured plan for improvement of time management and study skills.
