Leaving the comforts of the first world, Jessica Alexander abandons her job, fiancé, family, and home to venture into the misleading volunteer work of Humanitarian aid. Chasing Chaos: My Decade In and Out of Humanitarian Aid by Jessica Alexander is a conglomeration of stories that are written from Jessica’s memory. “It is a true account based on [Jessica’s] best recollections of the events and [her] experiences.”. Before joining the Humanitarian Industry Jessica Alexander was a former University of Pennsylvania graduate whom, after her mother died did not want to work in the corporate arena. Instead Jessica Alexander traveled to many different countries which include: Rwanda, West Darfur, North Darfur, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Sierra Leone and Haiti. While traveling, Jessica found love, dismay, disgust, happiness, and frustration– a mixture of emotions that she exemplified in through her actions, thoughts and narration.
The novel opens up with Jessica Alexander in North Darfur waking up to the sound of the muezzin. She reflects angrily in her head “Someone make him stop. Please make him stop.” This is our first encounter with Jessica Alexander as the humanitarian. This first impression makes Jessica seem ignorant and inconsiderate of those of whom she is trying to help. However, as the novel progresses we see multiple sides of Jessica.
