The Chesapeake Bay is a 200-mile-long estuary extending from Norfolk, VA to Havre de grace Maryland. On average this bay contains about 68 trillion liters of water. This bay is the largest estuary in North America. It inhabits more than 3,000 species of plants, animals, and fish. “Since the early twentieth century, the Chesapeake Bay has experienced serious environmental degradation. Problems include large reductions in sea grass, reduced amounts of finfish and shellfish (especially oysters and crab), seasonal depletions in dissolved oxygen, and increases in sedimentation.” (Atkins & Anderson, 2003) These changes are brought on by pollution (Eutrophication and Toxic Contamination), development, deforestation, and agriculture. Juan Ponce de Leon was a Spanish conquistador who went on many expeditions to Florida around the late 15th century and early 16th century. Ponce de Leon started his exploration in joining Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the Americas in 1493. They landed in Hispaniola and found a settlement to be destroyed and the sailors to be murdered. Columbus enforced a forced-labor policy and made the Natives rebuild the settlement and look for gold. In this voyage, Ponce de Leon learned many skills and tactics in which he would use in later voyages. In 1508, Ponce de Leon was sent to explore Puerto Rico and look for gold. He settled with 50 other soldiers in what is now San Juan and became the first governor of the eastern part of the country in 1509. He also discovered the Dry Tortugas, 10 small keys southwest of Key West. Ponce de Leon was governor for two years until he was replaced by the Columbus’s son. Trunk Bay has repeatedly made lists of the Top Ten beaches of the world. Access is easiest to the beaches on the north shore, a destination both for honeymooners and world travelers. Most of the beaches there are on land owned by the US National Park Service and open to public access, but with no resorts or hotels. One notable exception is Caneel Bay Resort, a privately-owned facility in an area that had once been the personal estate of the Rockefeller family. Cinnamon Bay and Trunk Bay are two areas well-known for excellent snorkeling along the coral reefs; underwater signs assist the tourist. There are public campgrounds at Cinnamon Bay and at Maho

Island bay and Owhiro bay, Wellington to collect data on the species of the rocky shore. This area showed a clear pattern of the low tide, mid tide, high tide and splash zone. The area had a variety of rocky shore species which were distributed in a zonation pattern. The two species I have chosen to investigate are the Cellana radians and the Cellana denticulata. Cellana radians commonly known as the Golden/radiate limpet has an outer shell that is smooth and very flat and usually has a darker colour with dark coloured lines. The Cellana radians is found in the lower intertidal zone and the mid intertidal zone and none in the high tide zone at sirens rocks. The Cellana radians are herbivores and feed on microalgae. The Cellana denticulata commonly known as the denticulate limpet has an outer cap shaped shell that tends to have brown lines, this protects their muscular foot, and the Cellana denticulata is an herbivore feeding on microalgae. It is found in the upper lower intertidal zone, mid tide zone and very few in the high tide zone at sirens rock. The Cellana denticulata and the Cellana radians showed that at sirens rocks the community pattern of distribution was zonation. I will also be investigating the adaptations, tolerance levels for abiotic factors for each species and the biotic factors such as their interspecific relationship of competition for food and space on the rocky shore surface relating to their distribution along the rocky shoreline at sirens rocks.
