According to a “go green” blog named 2B Green World Website-LEED Consultants, “buildings represent over 50% of US wealth; $800 billion is the amount of renovation and new construction in the United States, buildings account for 1/6 of the worlds freshwater withdrawals, ¼ of its wood harvest and 2/5 of its material and energy flow” (Go Green Facts 1).These figures represent the disadvantages of a world without green building. Throughout this report the focus is on LEED certification and accreditation, and the impact LEED has on several different service firms. However, it is not an easy task to become LEED Certified and accredited, people are accredited while buildings are certified (U.S. Green Building Council). In the next section, I will go into detail regarding the important rating system and what impacts the rating system has on LEED.
The LEED Rating System The USGBC established The Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) in order to provide a series of exams to allow individuals to become accredited for their knowledge of the LEED rating system. This is recognized through either the LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) or LEED Green Associate (LEED Green Assoc.) alias. GBCI also provides third-party certification for projects pursuing LEED certification. The main distinction between these three levels is that LEED AP is a higher form of LEED Green Assoc for people being accredited, while third-party certification is for buildings to be certified (U.S. Green Building Council).
For every building type, there is a Rating System and a comparative Reference Guide. Within the individual LEED Rating Systems there are Categories. Within these Categories are prerequisites and credits. Prerequisites are required of all LEED projects, and credits are points that are
