Prostitution: A Legal Dilemma

Prostitution is considered to be "the oldest profession." Prostitution can take many forms, from streetwalkers and brothels, to sophisticated call-girl or escort services. The laws regarding prostitution differ everywhere around the world. In some places around the world, soliciting a prostitute is grounds for punishment and even criminalization (Prostitution). Many prostitutes are criminalized because of their work. Therefore, they are usually victims of many crimes such as rape and assault. However, numerous amounts of studies have proved that legalizing prostitution brings a dramatic decrease in these crimes. A major study, “Street Prostitution Zones and Crime”, was conducted by Paul Bisschop, Stephen Kastoryano, and Bas van der Klaauw. Paul Bisschop graduated from the University of Amsterdam (along with Kastoryano and Klaauw) majoring in economic research. This team, lead by Paul Bisschop of SEO Amsterdam Economics, a public research institute in The Netherlands, enquiries if dedicated prostitution zones affect crime and sexual violence in Dutch cities. The team found evidence of a 32 to 40 percent reduction in two years within a city opening a tippelzone, which is an area where prostitution is tolerated. “The decreases in sexual abuse is stronger in cities with licensed tippelzones.” The authors believe the tippelzones lead “to a decrease in sexual violence on women more generally by providing an anonymous, appealing and easily accessible outlet for sex to otherwise violent individuals.” In a survey the authors cited that, “95 percent of the interviewed prostitutes report feeling safer within the tippelzone.” This yet again proves that through the legalization of prostitution, crime will decrease and benefit the safety of prostitutes because it specifically shows the reduction of crime in regulated prostitution zones.
