In the article For Marijuana, a Second Wave of Votes to Legalize written by Kirk Johnson, it is informing the readers about the contentious issue of whether or not the United States should legalize the use of marijuana to the citizens of each state. Colorado and Washington were the first two states to legalize sales of recreational marijuana to adults, which led to other states like Oregon, Alaska and Washington, D.C, to follow in their stride of the legalization of marijuana. Although many national groups have organized campaigns to invest millions of dollars for advertising pro-legalization, others have formed campaigns for anti-legalization. Marijuana should not be legalized in the United States unless the people are aware of certain restrictions …show more content…
Anti-marijuana efforts are starting to decrease due to the fact of politically involved leaders supporting the decriminalization of marijuana. Both the Republican and Democrat Party seem to have their fair share of leaders who are supporting the legalization since it “no longer carries the risk it once did”. I disagree with this because although many organizations have provided labor and money to legalize marijuana, this is still going to cause more problems amongst the people in the United States. Legalizing marijuana carries a bigger risk because many adults will be capable of having easy access to it and will not use it responsibly. Sheldon G. Adelson, a casino executive from Las Vegas, contributed $5 million to opponents of medical marijuana in Florida. Although medical marijuana catches the attention of many individuals, there are still cons to legalizing this. For one, many teens are able to get fake doctor prescriptions to receive the drug without actually needing it for medical purposes. I believe it should be considered to have laws that set stricter rules, so only those that need the drug for health conditions will be the ones to receive the
Legalizing marijuana is a concept that can potentially benefit the public as well as the local economies. There has been a nationwide debate on whether marijuana should be legalized or not. The major consensus is that marijuana is not only bad for one’s health, but it is also dangerous to the community. These allegations are not true. Marijuana actually has health benefits that most people overlook. The following essay will address these health benefits in an attempt to present this concept in a way that the audience can better understand how legalizing marijuana can beneficial to an individual health, how it can give an increase to the economy.
There currently exists a great debate concerning Legalization of marijuana. Many people are against the idea, but there are a number of people who fight for the idea to legalize Marijuana. The people that try to Legalize Marijuana use two major arguments in their effort to have marijuana legalized. First, which is by far the biggest argument is that marijuana has a significant medical use. The second is that marijuana does not cause harm to those that smoke it. Both of these arguments can be easily discounted by the numerous studies that have been done on the effects of marijuana both medicinal and recreational. Many well-intentioned leaders and members of the public have been misled by the well financed and organized pro-drug
The legalization of marijuana has been a hot topic in the media for many years now. There is a major divide in those who believe it should be legal, those who do not, and those who think it could be legal with modifications on the usage. The number of those who support the legalization of marijuana is on the rise with nearly 50% supporting recreational marijuana legalization, and 81% supporting marijuana legalization for medical treatment as of 2015 ("Public Support for Marijuana Legalization, 2015”). Marijuana should be legalized on a federal level because it is safer than alcohol, it will increase the economy, and there is an unfair criminalization of marijuana.
The topic of legalizing recreational marijuana in the United States has been a very controversial one. States such as Colorado and Washington have gone on the offensive and have legalized recreational marijuana and have enjoyed the high revenues brought in from cannabis sale. On the other hand other states have kept low profiles because they are wary of the possible negative outcomes of legalizing recreational marijuana and are using the states of Colorado and Washington as guinea pigs to see what their next course of action on this controversial topic should be. This is not only a highly debated topic among politicians, but also by the people. According to a poll conducted by the Pew Research Center 52% of Americans
Marijuana is a drug that is an ongoing issue in the United States for many years debating about whether it should be legal, so in 2010 the state of California proposed the “Tax, Regulate, and Control Cannabis Act” for voters to vote on which would make marijuana illegal. Charles Stimson, a former assistant U.S. Attorney specializing in crime, had strong opinions about what he thought about the issue and was paid to write an article by the Heritage Foundation where he could voice his opinion about legalized marijuana. In his article “Legalizing Marijuana: Why Citizens Should Just Say No,” Charles Stimson tries to persuade his audience, voters of California, that they should vote against legalized marijuana. He tries to persuade his audience
Legalization of marijuana is an important issue; most people recognize it as “harmful and addictive,” from the essay “Marijuana Should Not Be Legalized,” while others regard the ban on marijuana as ineffective, expensive, and unjust (1). According to Senator Bernie Sanders, “too many Americans have seen their lives destroyed because they have criminal records as a result of marijuana use. That’s wrong.” The ban is unjust for Americans because it is a complete waste of our tax dollars to continue criminalizing citizens for marijuana use. Legalization of marijuana in every state will be beneficial; for our economy, medical value and breakthroughs, lowering crime rate, aiding people who are victims of drug abuse, and more. The following paragraphs will explain further.
Marijuana legalization has been a topic of interest for many years in this country. How to regulate it? Tax it? Where it can be used? By whom? How old? Who can sell it? Federally legal or locally legal? The penalties involving it? All of those are questions that have been debated about and fought over in courts of law. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have been jailed for minor crimes involving Marijuana. It has many proven benefits both economically and medically. The times are changing and prohibition against marijuana is starting to fade away. Although still illegal federally, it is now fully legal in eight different states, and medically legal in thirty! This is great progress, but still isn’t enough. Marijuana will soon be legalized. There is plenty of benefits and I am fully for the legalization of marijuana nationwide.
There is no way of saying which direction the public opinion is taking the marijuana legalization talk. We have those that are against and the ones that are in favor. I can say we even have those that don’t care and prefer not to be involved with anything of it. The ones that are not in favor are those who think that legalizing marijuana is a dangerous drug, that it’s a threat to our children and also that crime will increase even
The main concern in this video is about the current process of legalizing marijuana and when and if there should be a legal wall between recreational or medicinal use. In the video they begin by showing the reactional aspect of marijuana they show us the different types of dispensaries, edibles and the different forms that marijuana can be consumed. However in the medicinal portion of the video they explain how growing companies can only be licensed with one they can either choose medicinal or recreational this of course is becoming very controversial due to the fact that many company’s move over to recreational due to the fact that it makes more money which also becomes a problem since most people try
This article discusses the actual controversy of marijuana uses, for both recreational and medical purposes. McCarthy emphasizes on the opinion of different optometrists, who are concern because patients are being asking questions related to marijuana uses and glaucoma, whether it is beneficial or not to treat such disease. However, the American Academy of Ophthalmology does not have a scientific evidence of marijuana effectiveness to treat glaucoma. In the 1970s different studies were conducted, showing that marijuana could lower intraocular pressure. Nonetheless, doctors do not back these studies, because medicinal marijuana can also make a weak intraocular pressure, and even harm the nerve. As a result, he states that marijuana is an ineffective
Maine voters faced five referendum questions. The approved four, which will legalize recreational marijuana use, increase school funding through a tax surcharge on high earners, increase the state’s minimum wage and implement ranked-choice voting. Voters rejected expanded firearm background checks. Many people have different viewpoints on all of these questions. Governor Paul LePage voiced his opinion that this system of how questions get on the ballot needs reform. Some Mainer agree with this, but the results of these five questions show mixed reviews. Stone’s Chapter on “Liberty” ties into the idea of the referendum in Maine, because it is the way our voices are heard on a ballot we vote on.
According to the U.S. drug enforcement administration, under Title 21 of the United States Code (USC) Controlled Substances Act, Section 812, marijuana is “classified as a 'Schedule One ' substance which has no medicinal value.”
Legalization of marijuana is one of the most controversial topics in American society today. Surveys done by the US Government’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Data Archive showed that 95 million Americans have used marijuana. There are two opposing sides that have strong stances on whether it should become legal or should remain illegal. We have one side that is anti-marijuana and the other is pro-marijuana. Each side provides valid and strong arguments supporting their views. The purpose of this paper is to carefully examine each opposing side and try to find some way to come to a compromise.
Marijuana has been around for many years that has created a disastrously bad habit. It can cause innocent people to do regretful activities with sedating effects on many users. This drug causes fear anxiety, and paranoia results with outbursts of aggressive behavior. In many people, marijuana once it wears off their behavior gradually improves. Although there are many kinds of drugs, marijuana is the most common. Legalizing marijuana should be forbidden for the sake of its effect on the brain. This law should never be written into effect for the safety of the general public and children.
Do you know what marijuana is? “Marijuana is a drug that is always being talked about all over the media. There is constant debate on whether it should be legalized or not. Also, debate on if it were to be legalized, how would they make it work. All these questions are things the government takes into account every day. There is a big divide between people’s beliefs on this matter. Some people think it should be, others think it shouldn’t, and some think it should be with some modifications on the usage. When you look at the benefits, there is no question that marijuana should be legal throughout the entire country. There are way more positive things that could come out of it being legal. The first reason weed should be legalized is because how many other drugs are legal. Weed is one of a few not too harmful drugs that are illegal.”
