Marijuana Legalization “Marijuana—also called weed, herb, pot, grass, bud, ganja, Mary Jane, and a vast number of other slang terms—is a greenish-gray mixture of the dried, shredded leaves and flowers of Cannabis sativa—the hemp plant. Some users smoke marijuana in hand-rolled cigarettes called joints; Marijuana can also be used to brew tea and, particularly when it is sold or consumed for medicinal purposes, “(drug abuse). Being aware of what happens in our country and politics becomes important for U.S. citizens to know information in what goes on around in their everyday lives. One media bias is, bias of omission which means leaving a side out and only focusing on the side of the article’s political perspective and disproving the other side. To demonstrate, Ingraham continuously disproves the conservative side throughout the article, “For the 395-page report, a team of dozens of drug policy experts at some of the nation's most prestigious universities analyzed 24,000 scientific papers to arrive at more than 100 conclusions regarding the effects of marijuana use.” (Ingraham). Ingraham only focuses on the liberal side, that becomes classified as the positive effects marijuana legalization. He thoroughly repeats the positive effects; health turnouts marijuana has on patients. However, this has effect on readers based on the type of bias it has on only focusing on one side and disproving the other. In addition, Bias by labeling can be seen as labeling a group or person on either side instead of labeling them properly as conservative or liberal. Ingraham constantly labels groups as “experts, researchers, committees, reports, and alliances.” For example, “A team of dozens of drug policy experts at some of the nation's most prestigious universities analyzed [...] work was sponsored by a number of public and private health agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institute on Drug Abuse.” (Ingraham). This sources could affect readers by their political views in the change of perspectives one side’s beliefs based on the labeling of groups which could convince the reader to the ‘expert’
