Nowadays marijuana is not only sweeping the nation; it has become a worldwide sensation, and it is making appearances everywhere on the globe. Marijuana is the most commonly abused illegal in the US and around the world. No matter how one looks at the combination of words marijuana, depressant or hallucinogen, there is no positive projected outcome or connotation. If it is true that a depressant reduces functional and nervous activity and a hallucinogen causes perception-altering hallucinations, then Marijuana is a drug that causes hallucinations, while reducing motor and sensory activity, essentially leaving the user a dysfunctional, temporary victim of Panic and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Uruguay was one of the first countries to legalize Marijuana, and they are now suffering from the conflicts that have awakened since the legalization of the drug. Cartels in these South American countries see the legalization of Marijuana as a “pathway for legalization of other drugs,” promising that “buyers will receive the best quality drug” (Cave). The reality is, these cartels “are just trying to make as much money as they can,” using the legalization of marijuana to expand their territory and power while staying under the radar; these cartels pose a major threat to society due to their influences and power over communities all over the world …show more content…

To be more specific,” Delta-9-THC and Delta-8-THC are the only compounds in the marijuana plant that produce all the psychoactive effects of marijuana” (Institute of Medicine). Cannabidiol, on the other hand, is less well known (though it accounts for 40% of the plant) and actually has a wider scope of medical applications than THC. Cannabidiol is where the real medicinal value of Marijuana comes from; “the problem is growers realized decades ago that THC is what sells; it provides the floating, euphoric feeling people associate with marijuana” (Giddingson). So if Cannabidiol is extractable and already exists as its own form of medication, why is there a need for this so called Medical Marijuana? The ugly truth is that Medical Marijuana is used more for the euphoric high than it is for the medicinal value.
